I knew I should have waited before I retired from IT... what in the world does one need to do to get Windows 7 to access Linux SMB fileshares? All the information I've found online is sketchy and confused at best
View 10 RepliesI wanted to test 10.04 and downloaded Wubi to do so. Normal setup, it automatically picked the 64-bit version. After booting into Wubi, installing my ATI drivers and restarting it did no longer connect to my ethernet. A few reboots didn't help so I went back to Windows for troubleshooting.
However now Windows doesn't connect to the ethernet either. It's plain dead, Windows doesn't find any connections and the modem doesn't light the Ethernet cable LED. The modem itself works fine with wireless devices. I have now tried everything including uninstalling Ubuntu, system restore, driver rollback, driver update, BIOS default settings, a different cable, a different modem etc.
This is a 64-bit specific issue because I tested the 32-bit version of Wubi 10.04 a few months ago without problems.

I'd like to get out of this without Ubuntu effectively having broken my hardware and my trust in it.
I'm running Lucid and and trying to get Samba set up to allow sharing files on my network. My problem is that my Windows laptop (Win7) can't see the Linux PC when I click on Network. It only shows my own laptop and my roommate's Vista laptop. However, if I manually connect to the computer (\serenity) it works just fine.
Right now I'm simply using the smb.conf that comes with the package and adding my share info.

I have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones
I wanted to be able to have separate NICs with separate IPs connecting to separate gateways on a machine so I could put an ftpd on each one. I tried binding an ftpd to each, and running separate instances of the ftpd. I tried virtual hosts.
NOTHING worked. I could either use one ftpd or the other. I could either connect via ssh on one IP or the other. the second I turned one NIC off stuff would work again. I messed with basic iproute commands, andnothng worked until I got this script to run, which allowed me to use each NIC independant of the other.

But now, samba client doesn't work. cifs mounting doesn't work either. It can't connect.
BEFORE I ran that script, I could connect via ssh, or to the ftpd running on the machine using a LOCAL IP - 10.10.10.2. AFTER, I have to use the external IP, or I cannot connect. I know that has something to do with it, but I do not have the advanced linux routing knowledge to redo the script or come up with a solution.
I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust installed 10.04 on a Toshiba Portege laptop. Everything works fine except the LAN connection. Just doesn't connect. Based on what I know everything is on and enabled but no luck. The wireless works fin but can't connect to the network in my office through the standard cable. Installed the same operating system on a newer Toshiba (the second is my but the older one is a friends) and no issues at all. Wondering if it is a driver issue but can't figure it out. Am relatively new to Ubuntu but so far have found it easy to troubleshoot just reading posts and just trying out **** until it works. But this I've hit a brick wall.
Also ran in to a similar issue my work pc, except I had been working with it fine with 10.04 until I did a security update and puff... no more network. The eth1 connection is enabled and set to automatic but just can't connect to it. Sorry if I'm not providing enough info, just tell me if there is anything you need to know first and I'll post it.
I've just upgraded my old laptop from xubuntu to ubuntu 10.10 and I have some connectivity problems with my usb adapter Netgear WG111v3. On xubuntu I had no problems with connecting on the network but with ubuntu, it says I have good reception but it doesn't connect on the network (rarely it does, but for a very short time). I have another laptop currently running on ubuntu 10.04 and it has no problems at all (however it has an internal usb card).

The problem is that because I'm away, the wireless just disconnects and the pop window shows up asking me to into the password. The password is already saved in the windows so I just have to click 'connect'ut I don't understand why does it disconnect and when it tries to connect it asks for password again!y doesn't it simply 'try' to connect without asking the password when it is already saved.

I have a dell d800 laptop using a hp 802abg nic and it doesn't properly initialize until gnome desktop is loadedI'm using 128 bit key and a hidden network name.I would like to have wireless networking running before /etc/rc.local is executed at boot time to connect to nfs shares.after gnome is loaded and I login to user account, wireless networking starts and connects.When I set inittab to 3 and boot machine, ifconfig and iwcfg report card doesn't exist, when I then telinit 5 and start x/gnome card gets properly setupis it possible the card doesn't get initialize3ed because the network key needs to be entered in a file somewhere that the boot sequence can access it and init the card properly?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Broadcom 4312 wireless chip. I have use the STA drivers that Ubuntu recommends. I can connect quite easily just by clicking on the icon, so this is more than a niggle than a problem.
My network isn't protected as we live in the middle of nowhere (quite literally) and network theft isn't a problem. We also run a self-catering cottage, and let guests have free access to our network anyway, so it is easier for guests to access our network without me having to give them all the key. When I did use wpa, it would start itself up with the laptop, so I kind of know that this might be the cause. Is there any way I can fix it without encrypting the network?
i have added a vpn connection on my Lucid desktop machine, but every time i try and connect, it fails. I also have the same, identical vpn connection on my karmic install on my laptop. everything works perfectly on Karmic, but Lucid is having problems. I have followed identical steps for creating the vpn connection on both machines: vpn connections can be made in 2 ways, the first is through the network manager, but trying to connect through the nm-applet returns an error about vpn failing to connect and "no valid vpn secrets".
I suspect this is at the root of the problem. The only way for my Lucid machine to successfully connect through the command line is if I run the openvpn command under sudo.
recently I risked a look to the Linux world and I'm happy so far, but now I've got a Problem, I'm unable to solve by myself. I installed Mint (Julia) on my old Laptop to test Linux. The Laptop has a very old PCMCIA WLAN Card with a Realtek rtl8180 chipset. Everything seems to run perfectly so far with one exception: the WLAN doesn't find any Network to connect although the card and the driver seem to be installed correctly.

I have installed WvDial (apparently) but it has no icon or launcher to start it by default, how do i get it to run? I also need basic set up how to. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) and network manager doesn't seem to be able to use my modem to connect to the internet (set up wizard works, appears connected, but then I get page not found error). Hence I wish to use WvDial to try to connect instead.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi'm experiencing some weird behaviour: I have a server running ubuntu 10.04 and two Apple laptops in my home network. Sometimes after booting up the server doesn't connect to the wireless network, but instead "kills" the connection of the laptops. (The network then isn't available for about two minutes - it's showing but it can't connect) On the server the network interface is up, but not associated.
Sometimes the interface isn't configured properly (iwconfig isn't showing an entry) - but in this case the behaviour obviously isn't showing. some information about my system:

I have an HP DV6 3143se which has a Ralink 3090 wifi card in it.the only thing that doesn't work at the moment is the Wifi. I tried installing the Linux backports module, but the trouble is that sometimes, my home wifi network is shown on the list of available networks and most often, it's not. when the network does show up, and i click on it and enter my WPA2 password, it takes ages to handshake and then it tells me that my password is wrong. the same password works in windows 7 so something's not working.
when i try to disable and re enable wireless network on the network manager applet, i get a Wireless device not ready or Network manager not running message.

I have xbmc, a media center shell that runs on ubuntu. I am trying to set up a laptop to run it and be a full time media center. so far it works great, I installed xbmc live, but the only issue is I have a wep2 protected wireless router and the wifi does not connect automatically.
I have it set up and am using wpa_supplicant once those commands are run the wifi works great.I am a novice in linux in general, and can not seem to get this to work on startup, can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I haven't been able to find the xbmc start up script if one exists, I figured adding those lines to it might work,does this sound like a reasonable approach? if anyone knows where that is and how it is defined to be launched on start-up i would appreciate it(I guess this is getting into the general Linux knowledge but still good info)
I've just literally gone out this morning and bought the Belkin N300 Dual Band USB for my Deskstation running Maverick Meerkat. At first i put the stick in and nothing happened. So i went to System>admin>Windows wireless drivers and clicked on there. I put the CD in the drive that came with the dongle and found the drivers folder on the disk. I then installed the .inf file in the XP folder. It connected straight away as easy as that.
I'm really frustrated though as it loses conectivity and then asks me for my WAP password on connection, but then doesn't seem to connect. I unplug the dongle and then hit connect again and it connects.
If i use the same dongle on XP i have no problems what so ever, so i know its not a signal strength issue.
This is on Lucid, using a Dell Mini. I installed the required packages for a USB tether to my iPhone. Network Manager recognized it immediately as wwan0, but it doesn't connect. Also, it never asks me for the password to connect to the Personal Hotspot (as it does when I can connect from Windows).

View 11 Replies View RelatedThe auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot).Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:

I've recently bought a recycled computer for my office. The plan was to get an old cheap computer and use it to write LaTex documents but nothing else. However, I can't seem to get the thing to connect to the internet. I'm on a University network which has a funny setup but I don't think that's the problem.So here's the deal. I have tried this with 9.04, 10.04 and 10.10 and it hasn't worked. The computer recognizes the ethernet cable. If I issue the command "sudo mii-tool eth0" and get back "eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok". However, click on the networking logo on the top right, and click auto eth0, it tries to connect for about 30 seconds, then gives up. Unfortunately I'm pretty clueless when it comes to networking so I have no idea what to do to try to fix this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedExcuse the length but this issue will take a little explaining. I need to connect my fedora11 box to a windows XP (sp3) laptop. Both are on a lan, with the fedora box at 192.168.0.100 and the laptop at 192.168.0.102. The laptop has openssh server by way of cygwin. Both machines have account jimm with the same password. I can ssh (putty) from the laptop to fedora but can't go the other way. When I ssh from fedora to windows I get a login and password request which results in "Permission denied, please try again." . I know the password is correct as I login to the laptop with it. I have also tried using the windows rdp by turning remote access on in windows and then using any of a variety of desktop viewers to connect. This always results in a version of "Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: 192.168.0.102: unable to connect ". I have turned off firewalls in both machines for these tests and made sure that the local router is completely open to lan traffic. I've checked the forums and not gotten any ideas on how to fix this. I seem to remember (from way back when) that there was an issue connecting when windows switched from plain text passwords to encrypted. The ssh password rejection is what got me thinking about this. By the way, I forgot to mention that I can mount a samba share of the windows drive on the fedora box.
