I have an old Toshiba Satellite A30 Notepad. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto it and everything but WiFi works. I've installed wicd and several other network tools but just can't get Ubuntu to let me use the WiFi connection (the option is greyed out).I know the card works because the last OS (Windows XP) used it without any problems. The card is detected, the drivers are installed and the hardware (slider) switch is set to on.I think the issue is related to the Radio Frequency Kill Switch being on but I don't know how to turn it off.The output from various commands are:
sudo lshw -C network is:
Code:
*-network:0
description: Ethernet interface[code]............

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Gateway M520 laptop, and after failing to get the Broadcom wireless chip that came with it working I swapped it out for an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get wireless to work. The chip doesn't appear to be turned on (it is detected though), and the hotkey to switch wireless on/off (Fn+F2) doesn't work in Ubuntu. I also am not sure if I have the proper drivers to get the chip working with Ubuntu, and I'm not sure how to figure that out.
Since I've noticed it's asked for a lot, here's the output for iwconfig:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
eth2 radio off ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: Not-Associated

I was trying to update the drivers for my wireless card and it no longer works. I have a cisco pcmcia card that I got working to use as a backup, but I would prefer to use my internal card. The card is the Intel Pro 2200BG. Please let me know what information is needed to diagnose and correct this issue. I am relatively new to Linux (Currently using F10) and trying to learn. This is the iwconfig from my cisco card. The Intel card was working fine yesterday. but now doesn;t even show up.
[west@garfield ~]$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth1 no wireless extensions.

I have a dell d800 laptop using a hp 802abg nic and it doesn't properly initialize until gnome desktop is loadedI'm using 128 bit key and a hidden network name.I would like to have wireless networking running before /etc/rc.local is executed at boot time to connect to nfs shares.after gnome is loaded and I login to user account, wireless networking starts and connects. When I set inittab to 3 and boot machine, ifconfig and iwcfg report card doesn't exist, when I then telinit 5 and start x/gnome card gets properly setupis it possible the card doesn't get initialize3ed because the network key needs to be entered in a file somewhere that the boot sequence can access it and init the card properly?

I recently formatted an old Dell D600 and installed 9.10 on a single partition. It connects to my Airport just fine hardwired, but I have had no success getting the IntelPro/Wireless 2200BG card to talk wireless. I've entered the SSID and WPA2 security ID with no success.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T60, running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) with a dual boot of Windows XP. I am having trouble getting it to connect to my home wireless network, which uses WEP. It connected fine at my university when I first installed Lucid, but has not connected at home. I can see the network in the panel applet, with a good signal strength, but when I try to connect it repeatedly asks me for my key and never actually connects. I had this problem shortly before I installed Lucid, though it was working for a long time previously. I'm not sure what update caused it to stop working because I was at my university at the time, and it works fine there even now, so I didn't realize it right away.
I doubt this is a hardware issue because I can connect to the same network when I boot into Windows. I have seen posts about similar problems on the forums, but couldn't find any solutions that helped me.
Below is the information the wireless help guide said to post. Machine Brand and Model: IBM Thinkpad T60
Wireless Brand, Model, and Wireless Chipset: lspci -nn | grep 'Wireless'
Code:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086:4227] (rev 02)
Check Interface:
ifconfig wlan0

I'm trying to set up ubuntu on my netbook, the brand and make is obscure, essentially, this is a no-name brandless build from china, but a pretty decent lappy. Atom N270 Intel 945GSE based. initially it was equipped with a 3DSP wifi/bluetooth mPCIe combo card, which is proprietary and didn't work on ubuntu (didn't even show up as a device), so I got an intel 4965agn based on compatibility list somewhere in the wiki.
The problem I have is that I see networks, but can't connect at home or at work or anywhere, it just hangs in the connecting status and then throws the authentication popup at me again (pw is all correct). I tried looking around at similar problems, some have wpa_supplicant related issues, but doesn't seem to be the same as mine.
I tried creating an unsecured network using my macbook's airport, and same thing happened with ubuntu... hangs in connecting status then drops, so it doesn't seem to be WPA. I don't have the device on me to do all the iflist iwlist checks for you, but if you could give me some clues, I'll post back when I get home.

I cant seem to understand what happens to my wifi networking, i just installed ubuntu 10.10 today (completely erasing windows) on my toshiba satellite m645. Seems like my wireless card (the specs say its intel 802.11a/g/n wireless LAN) will only randomly detect the available networks or will connect only for a few seconds just after i just turned it on, then it will disconnect.

Wireless networking doesn't seem to work. When I try to create a new network interface with system-config-network, my wireless card doesn't show up. The following comes from dmesg:
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.0kmprq
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation

I saw a post about this elsewhere and downloaded some firmware drives from [URL] and installed then. But, I'm really out of my league when it comes to this kind of stuff.

I facing a really annoying problem. I download regularly during the night using Wifi. The problem is that because I'm away, the wireless just disconnects and the pop window shows up asking me to into the password. The password is already saved in the windows so I just have to click 'connect'ut I don't understand why does it disconnect and when it tries to connect it asks for password again!y doesn't it simply 'try' to connect without asking the password when it is already saved.

The box that asks me to put in the password occasionally shows up but it still doesn't load. I even tried re-installing Ubuntu and didn't fix anything.I'm using kernel version 2.6.35-22-generic and

I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

I have only had a few weeks worth of experience with linux, so I'm probably considered a newbie at this but I felt like giving it a shot. I just configured my new Toshiba Satellite A505-S6969 to jaunty. Most of the transition is going well but I'm stuck with a few issues, one of which is getting my wifi to work. i'm experiencing some weird behaviour: I have a server running ubuntu 10.04 and two Apple laptops in my home network. Sometimes after booting up the server doesn't connect to the wireless network, but instead "kills" the connection of the laptops. (The network then isn't available for about two minutes - it's showing but it can't connect) On the server the network interface is up, but not associated.
Sometimes the interface isn't configured properly (iwconfig isn't showing an entry) - but in this case the behaviour obviously isn't showing. some information about my system:
Ubuntu Version: Server 10.04x64
Wireless Card: Netgear WG311v3 with marvell chipset
Driver: ndiswrapper+mrv8335x64

I've just literally gone out this morning and bought the Belkin N300 Dual Band USB for my Deskstation running Maverick Meerkat. At first i put the stick in and nothing happened. So i went to System>admin>Windows wireless drivers and clicked on there. I put the CD in the drive that came with the dongle and found the drivers folder on the disk. I then installed the .inf file in the XP folder. It connected straight away as easy as that.
I'm really frustrated though as it loses conectivity and then asks me for my WAP password on connection, but then doesn't seem to connect. I unplug the dongle and then hit connect again and it connects.
If i use the same dongle on XP i have no problems what so ever, so i know its not a signal strength issue.

Are Intel wireless cards compatible with non-intel-based laptops? In my case I wish to upgrade the current Atheros-based mini pci express wifi card with the Intel 4965agn. It is an Asus 4520 with an AMD Athlon X2 processor and nvidia nForce chipset.

how to set up wireless networks. The technical language is foreign to me. My notebook maybe described as follows:
Make and Model: SONY VAIO FW490
Processor: Intel Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)
RAM: 4GB DDR2-SDRAM
Graphics card: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD4650 graphics card with 512MB vRAM.

It came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium but now I have Fedora 11 (w/ Gnome) as the only OS. The router that I am using with an Ethernet cable connected to my laptop is a Netgear 54Mbps Wireless Router WGR614 v7 connected to a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem. Both worked right out of the box and now I have wired Internet access. RCN is my ISP. I would like to avoid using the Ethernet cable connecting my laptop to the router.
This is what I have done so far:
1. Gone to System>Administration>Network
2. Clicked "New" then chose "Wireless connection" from the list
3. Chose Intel Corp. Wireless WiFi Link 5100 (wlan0) from list. The other option was "Other Wireless Card".
I don't know what to do after this. What should I choose in the windows entitled "Configure Wireless Connection" and "Configure Network Settings" ? I chose Ad-Hoc for mode and entered an SSID name even though I have no explanation for taking these actions. As for the other settings, I simply went with whatever was already selected. At the moment, I lose Internet access when I disconnect the Ethernet cable. I see other wireless networks when I click the network icon on the top right corner of the screen. I don't know how to make my router appear on that list if that's necessary.

Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.
