Networking :: Postfix: Mail To Invalid Addresses Being Forwarded To Postmaster Instead Of Bouncing
Jul 8, 2010
Mail going to invalid email addresses are being forwarded to postmaster@domain instead of being bounced. How can I fix this? postconf -d | grep mail_version gives the following: mail_version = 2.2.5

I am running Fedora Core 8 as my mail and proxy server. My mail works properly for all users, but the problem I'm having is that when I create an alias for user's email to be forwarded to their gmail, the ISP bounces the mail. My ISP has given me an open relay to send mail.Is there somewhere in sendmail that I could put the user name and password of the ISP, so that the ISP will not bounce the forwarded mail. Or is there something that I'm missing?

assist me in using the iptables firewall to block all incoming mail traffic (SMTP port 25) except that of a certain IP(s)? the situation is that we have a server that we only want to receive mail from a particular sender.

I have two nagging problems on one network which I do not have on another elsewhere, both using uptodate Debian servers. The server is on the private subnet behind a router/adsl modem. The symptoms of the one which does not work
1) Users cannot access their web site from lan. If they try, they get to the router web interface, same as if they entered http:10.0.0.138 which is the router's lan address.
2) Users cannot access smtp or pop3 service using the domain name, they can access it only using the servers LAN address.
I fear that I might have not set up the router properly because appart from that the two servers are almost identical but I do not know where I might have made an error.

One inconvenience I face now, though, is that I cannot tell if I have already forwarded certain messages or not, because the message is not automatically tagged as forwarded. how to set it up, so it would indicate in the list that the message has been forwarded?

I managed to get my hylafax server nice and going, I also setup up AvantFax and Faxy to reach it from the web..What I still want to do it to send a mail from my blackberry device with a JPEG attachment, and have it forwarded as a FAX to the recipient fax machine...
I read and saw a few documentation here and there, but it is very confusing for me...
courier-faxmail seemed nice, but it conflicts with Hylafax..
Hylafax help support is unclear to me...
I'm not sure jpg attachments from blackberry are "standard" jpg, and, I have no idea how to forward this as a fax...
For what I understood, I need to have a running mail agent on my server, and a script to forward this to hylafax..

here is my main.cf file
# Global Postfix configuration file. This file lists only a subset
# of all parameters. For the syntax, and for a complete parameter
# list, see the postconf(5) manual page (command: "man 5 postconf").
#
# For common configuration examples, see BASIC_CONFIGURATION_README
[Code]...
i dont know what i should write about my main.cf file so i post the whole file here.

I'm using postfix on Ubuntu 9.10 and all I need is to occasionally send automated emails from perl or php scripts when data processing errors occur. In other words, I want to reject any connection attempts from remote clients and otherwise allow nothing except outgoing emails from one particular account.f I add this line to the default main.cf, will it do the trick or is it more complicated?
Code:
smtpd_sender_restrictions reject

so i set out to change the default smtp port the server uses because my ISP blocks port 25 and i need the email to work in outlook. this morning i could receive email, but not send it. so i did some research and thought that i needed to edit the master.cf file in /etc/postfix/ by commenting out this line: smtp inet n - n - - smtpd -oand replace it with587 inet n - n - - smtpd (587 being the port i want to use)somewhere along the lines postfix server stopped running and now i cannot get it to start.if i try using SSH it crashes immediately and if i restart it in simple control panel nothing happens

I have setup a postfix mailserver and it seems to be working ok, we are only using this to relay mail to our forum users. Its not being used to recieve any email only send them out to the internet.
What is the difference between the mail.log and mail.info files? Can I turn one or both off? I see alot of messages like...
Just wondering what this string of log entries means? Also I am getting duplicates in the syslog file as well.

Two exchange servers internally. One is setup for example.com (192.168.1.10) and the other is setup for example2.com (192.168.1.20) Both are behind a single public IP.
I want to use postfix to sit in front of the two exchange servers. Postfix will accept mail for both domains and relay to the appropriate server. I have postfix installed with only defaults at this point.

I set-up his mail server for him with Postfix but what he wants I have no idea how to do.
Essentially he wants it so that the mail gateway IP corresponds with the dedicated IP of the domain and I have no idea how to accomplish this.
I found some documentation on the web saying that the fix for this was to run multiple instances of Postfix which I tried doing but each time I try to start the second instance I get the error that postfix is already running.
There has to be an elegant way to make this happen, I really hate to tell a client something can't be done even though the concept is a bit pointless, IMHO. I am hoping I can get some feedback here on if this can be done and if it can the easiest way for me to accomplish doing it.
Here is some of the config files (example.com has been put in place of the actual domain names and the ip of 5.5.5.5 is in place of the actual IPs
Code:
[root@youronlinehosting ~]# cat /etc/postfix/transport
example.com smtp:5.5.5.5
example.com smtp:5.5.5.6
example.com smtp:5.5.5.7
[Code].....

The scenario: We have an external server that runs HTTP/DB servers for out shop system. Then, there's our local, in-house infrastructure that runs a.. yeah... Exchange 2010. The shop system on the external server needs to send mails to customers (order confirmations, invoices, etc.). seing as sending them directly through the local MTA (Postfix) would cause mail delivery problems because of reverse DNS issues, i've set the Postfix MTA to act as a satellite to our in-house Exchange Server, so the Exchange sends the mail instead, giving recipient mail servers a valid reverse DNS lookup.
Now, mails sent by the (proprietary, uneditable) shop system are relayed correctly and sent to the target e-mail address. My problem is: Mails not sent by the shop system, but by our own PHP scripts which run on that same external servers, are NOT relayed properly. So the Exchange is fine with the mails sent by the shop system, but not the mails sent by our scripts. This is what i get in the mail.log: The successfully relayed mail sent by the shop system:
[Code]....

I'm running a Debian LAMP server and I am adding postfix. The initial config is working and I can send and receive mail both locally and over the WAN. The problem is that I cannot get mail delivered to the user's home directory using Maildir/. I have set the:home_mailbox = Maildir/ parameter in main.cf but mail still goes to /var/mail after Postfix reload. The system is now using Maildir/ instead of mbox but in /var/mail. I really want to get mail into the user's home directory.

It wasn't too long ago that I discovered Linux/Ubuntu (in terms of actually USING it) and I've been completely blown away by the capabilities it puts in the user's hands! To think that someone can take an old desktop from a trash pile (literally, in my case) and turn it into a web server for ZERO dollars is absolutely crazy.
Anyway, I've been using said desktop as a sort of "dummy" machine to learn Linux. I want to be clear that I've got another computer for personal use and that I understand that setting up server software on any computer poses a security risk. Having said that, I have a few questions regarding mail servers and their setup on Ubuntu. Again - I'm comfortable with what I've done so far in Ubuntu (installing packages, terminal interaction, basic usage)
My question is mainly this: if you have, say, a domain name through DynDNS (let's say example123.com) and it points to an Ubuntu system, does something like Postfix enable you to make your own email addresses such as user1@example123.com and have an email server from wherever the Ubuntu system is?
I've been following the basic Postfix setup here and have had success so far (down to the "Adding your local domains to postfix" section) bu wanted to make sure that what I'm intending to do is what I'm doing (haha... i hope that makes sense). That is: get domain name at DynDNS, host pages on LAMPP server, use Postfix to facilitate incoming/outgoing email for that domain name.

I have 2 interfaces (only one wan facing) with public ip addressing. when i nat to the outside network, inside routed networks work fine, but when i nat to the inside interface the routed networks no longer work. That is too say when I nat to an inside ip, I appear natted, and not routed, to routed ip. My question relates to iptables: How to I say 'nat everything but the routed networks'? I have found that -d ! x.routed.1.x/x works: but I would like to write the rule so that it says -d ! x.routed.1.x/x + x.routed.2.x/x
Nat outside, working routed net:
Code:
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -i x.ouside.eth.x -s 192.x.x.x/x -j SNAT --to x.outside.eth.ip
This works and I get 1 routed network (I have to drop the -i to make it work - why?):
Code:
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.x.x.x/x -d ! x.routed.1.x/x -j SNAT --to x.inside.eth.ip
I would like something like this:
Code:
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.x.x.x/x -d ! x.routed.1.x/x + x.routed.2.x/x /
-j SNAT --to x.inside.eth.ip

I am trying unsuccessfully to have a more permanent fix so I can receive emails from an invalid domain. The message is 'Sender address rejected: Domain not found' in the postfix mail logs. Fair enough, there may be an A record or MX record problem there, but there is nothing I can do about this with the Sender at present. Mail *will* come through from the invalid domain if I delete
Code:
reject_unknown_sender_domain
from the list at: smtpd_recipient_restrictions in /etc/postfix/main.cf (see coded area below for full list). I have added the Domain in question as an 'OK', both by name and by IP address, to: /etc/postfix/recipient_access, then used postmap to successfully create the database which appears as: recipient_access.db
ie recipient_access (not recipient_access.db) has contents: invalid-domain-name.com OK ; the space betw is a tab space 123.456.789.012OK ; the space betw is a tab space I suspect the failure is something to do with postmap and the recipient_access.db database file created by postmap, but just cannot work this out. Running: postconf -d indicates that the hash format is the default database format
As indicated below,
Code:
check_recipient_access hash:/etc/postfix/recipient_access is listed up front in smtpd_recipient_restrictions Postfix was restarted on all occassions Everything above was done as root and permissions on the .db files are the same as other files in /etc/postfix
From /etc/postfix/main.cf:
Code:
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes
smtpd_helo_required = yes
disable_vrfy_command = yes

I've setup my server by following a ton of goods, and it seems to work ok, but I need to start using my server for email in order to receive orders placed via my website. I've followed this guide - [URL] I followed the steps above, and tested the mail server via telnet, and all seemed to be ok. I tried sending an email via Squirrelmail, from cs@thinclientwarehouse.co.uk TO my working email simon@c1systems.co.uk, but the server returned with the following message:
<simon@c1systems.co.uk>: host mail.c1systems.co.uk[95.128.128.129] said: 550-Verification failed for <cs@localhost.thinclientwarehouse.co.uk> 550-The mail server could not deliver mail to cs@localhost.thinclientwarehouse.co.uk.
