I've just set up OpenSSH on my Ubuntu 8.04 box. Observe no firewall in system services list on ubuntu box. Attempt to ssh using putty from windows laptop attached to same router. Putty connection times out. Can ping ubuntu box from laptop.

I also looked into Samba and do not understand how to use it. It is installed on my Linux laptop, but I have no idea how to access it. I'm hoping that connecting to my Windows laptop is a fairly simple process.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi ve been a thorough user of ubuntu and one reason for me using windows is that office uses a windows based software. i ve been lucky to install the same on my laptop and executing it using wine. the hitch is that whatever i work on the laptop doesnt get updated in the server. is there a mapping needed or some extra configuration ? the documents i post on my laptop is visible within the software but its not shown up on server database.

sudo su was not originally in the steps but it wouldn't give me permission to edit the samba file unless I did.Also at the end it said command not found or something like that when I tried to restart samba, so I just logged out and then back in.So now I can identify Ubuntu and Win 7 from on each other, but I can not access either of them. Ubuntu goes into windows network, then workgroup, shows the computers on the network but when I try to access one this comes up:When windows tries to access Ubuntu it request for username and password. I type it in but it does not recognize it.
P.S. I allowed the Documents folder on Ubunto to share across the Network, and while it shows up in along with myshare on Win 7, it still requests for username and password.
i just got my xubuntu , and i'm pretty satisfied with it , i mean : it works ok for my very old system (512mb ram , integrated video card , pentium4 procesor 478 2.8 ghz) forced to use it , because i had to take my motherboard to warranty .... anyway , i just wanted to know how can i connect my pc ( xubuntu ) with another laptop ( i would like to have file transfer , and why not control over the desktop from my laptop , or control my laptop from my pc , i think it is called remote desktop ) . My network connection is through a modem , that is connected to a router from which goes a lan cable to my pc (xubuntu ) and my laptop is wireless connected to the router . Now before I go out and spend money on a wireless usb thing, I was wondering if I could use my laptop (Ibm think pad T60 running ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with crunch bang) As a wireless access-point and connect via Ethernet cable the laptop to the desktop (Probably through a modem?) so I can use the Internet for games on the desktop computer. (Games that wont work in wine, sigh). Just a note though, 64 bit windows 7 will NOT run anything.

Because of a problem with system freezes I have updated to the 2.6.33-020633rc7 kernal but this hasn't had any impact one way or another on wireless speeds.
My router is a Belkin WRT300n.
Since I installed fedora on my desktop (there is no other OS on my desktop computer at the moment) I can't connect to my laptop which has Windows XP installed on it, although I can normally connect to internet from both computers. Here is the drawing to illustrate how everything is connected:
On the picture you can see that the phone line goes to the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem is connected to the Wireless modem with LAN cable. Wireless modem is connected to my desktop computer with LAN cable, and trough the wireless connection to the laptop. Internet is working fine for both computers, but desktop can't see laptop and vice versa. What do I need to do in order to see the laptop?
Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.
When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.
Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 into a laptop where the Windows OS was... quite FUBAR. And, when I try to load Ubuntu from a flash drive, this comes up.

I downloaded the disk ISO torrent and burned it to a DVD. I then ran the DVD and installed Ubuntu using the Windows installer. Upon rebooting, I get the boot menu asking which OS I want to start. I select Ubuntu and it goes to a countdown to hit ESC to select boot options. Once boot starts, I get a bunch of crap on the command lines and then it hangs. The entry it hangs on is something to do with? child-(several numbers I can't remember right now). I hope that is enough for someone to identify where it's hanging during boot. what is causing this? The computer is a Toshiba Satallite L505D-S5983. You can look up the specs for that. Processor is an AMD Athlon II M300 2.0Ghz, 32-bit, with 3GB RAM. Video is AMD M860G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4100. Primary OS is Windows 7. I'll see if I can find some paper and a pen to write down the particulars of the error. I usually use my computer for note-taking, but I obviously can't do that here.

I need some software that will provide two-way syncing between these machines:
1) Sync folders from HTPC to the laptop
As the laptop is new, all the media content I want to have on the laptop (music and photos) will be on the HTPC.
2) Backing up content from laptop to HTPC
New content (purchased music and photos) is likely to be added on the laptop initially so I'd therefore like to sync (instantly/automatically if possible) this back to the HTPC to make it available there as well.
Does anyone know of any good software to do this?
I'd originally been thinking of DropBox but, as I understand it, you have to use a DropBox folder however, on the HTPC, music and photos will be on different drives and it seems that putting symlinks inside the DropBox folder is not recommended.
This post also talks about using Ubuntu One. I think there's a Windows beta version available but does this sync between machines on a local network as I thought it was a cloud storage solution and I'm not looking to upload any content to the internet at this stage.

When I try to connect, It it says "limited connectivity" and does not let her utilize the internet. My brother is dual booting ubuntu karmic and winXP and is able to connect on both os's. I am absolutely sure I am entering the correct pass-phrase and ssid.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSynopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.
What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:
Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.
So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.

The gentleman who helped me there went above and beyond the call of duty as we used to say in the military. Accordingly, I wanted to start a new thread to explore options to the pending completion. So, several systems in play here. I will list two of the three with the presumption that the SSH situation is in play (testing it today from outside of my network).
Systems Currently in Play: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition with all updates as of today's post: Server: Acer Aspire AST180-400A. It is currently being accessed from Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition with all updates as of today's post from a laptop: Toshiba Satellite A200. Router: Netgear N300 WNR 2000v2. Modem is Motorola Netopia 2210-02-1006. Proposed System To Add: eMachine ET1331G-05w running Windows 7. Why? Well, my girlfriend is terrified to ditch the Bill Hates way of things. It is running through the router currently as well.
What I would like to be able to do is access the Windows 7 desktop via my laptop on the road as well. Specifically, I need to be able to access and view documents and photos. Now, the docs are at least in OpenOffice; she switched to it finally. I would like to also be able to view my desktop to access docs and pictures on the server, but that may be a new thread as the Win7 situation is the priority right now.
I recently installed the 32bit version of 10.10 on my Dell Latitude E6510. Everything went smoothly.. in fact I was quite impressed as I have my laptop in a docking station connected to dual 24" displays. The installer recognized them and they worked perfectly right outta the box: yea for Ubuntu !
After the install, I installed some apps then upgraded the installation to the latest hotness - lots and lots of things were upgraded. I restarted the machine to "complete the upgrade process" and it boots but right when it gets to starting the Windows environment, both display just loose their signal...
It boots fine to the command line if I boot in safe mode. I had installed the nVidia drivers but I did that before the update and I had no problems until I did the system update. Any ideas? Should I start by disabling the 3rd party drivers? If so, how would I do that?
I've noticed that a lot of laptops these days have fast web access buttons that quickly launch a linux os, or recovery buttons that seem to launch some other stripped down os.
So I was wondering, would it be possible to get these buttons to launch a normal ubuntu distribution? Have one button for ubuntu and the normal power button for windows?
That would be really sweet for dualbooters.
Or is it just technically/physically not possible?

I'm wondering if there is any way to execute a program, run some command or anything else when closing the laptop's lid.
My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.
