I have two ubuntu 11.04 laptops that today stopped working with my home wifi, but my windows laptop works fine. These same ubuntu laptops connect fine to iPhone wifi hotspot.

I've never setup a LAN before, how would I do it? My laptop's dual booting slack and lucid, the other two are vista/karmic and standalone 7. All 3 have cards capable of wireless G and Ethernet ports.

Background: I have a Dell Studio 1745 with builtin Intel 5100bg wireless card. It connects to my Linksys WRT54G router just fine in openSUSE 11.2 & 11.3 using either KDE or Gnome. In Fedora 13 it only connects under Gnome, not KDE. Those are using NetworkManager. Using traditional ifup only works in Fedora under Gnome, i.e. nothing works under KDE in Fedora.

I just got Ubuntu and am new at this stuff. I have a dual boot windows 7 64 bit one and ubuntu 10.4. I booted ubuntu at startup and then tried to go online, but it says my wireless device is disabled. I tried pressing the keys on my keyboard to see if that may work, but it doesn't. I purchased a Toshiba L500 (64 bit) which ran Win7 Home Premium; I wiped the HD and installed Windows 32 bit Pro. Runs like a top. Even after I installed Win 7 Pro, I had to search back on the Toshiba site for the wireless and Lan drivers to reinstall. I then installed Fedora 13 which gives me use of Win7 but also Fedora; However, does anyone know where there is a copy of an rpm driver (or for that matter a deb driver) for the following; 1. Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast ethernet controller and, 2. the Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless Lan 802.11n PCI-E NIC?
Obviously, without the availability of online status for Linux on Laptops, Linux becomes a useless paperweight and I have a very fast new Win7 Pro machine.
I have a windows 7 (64bit sadly) desktop computer with no wireless capability. Now before I go out and spend money on a wireless usb thing, I was wondering if I could use my laptop (Ibm think pad T60 running ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with crunch bang) As a wireless access-point and connect via Ethernet cable the laptop to the desktop (Probably through a modem?) so I can use the Internet for games on the desktop computer. (Games that wont work in wine, sigh). Just a note though, 64 bit windows 7 will NOT run anything.

I did disable ipv6 (it now shows up as being 'ignored' in network Manager which is correct, right?) but that hasn't helped.
It doesn't make a difference whether I use DHCP for everything or just for address only with the Google DNS addresses.

Because of a problem with system freezes I have updated to the 2.6.33-020633rc7 kernal but this hasn't had any impact one way or another on wireless speeds.
My router is a Belkin WRT300n.

For perhaps 5 minutes I can either ssh into or from the F15 computer using:

Works fine, no problems. And then in about five minutes it work resolve in either direction: ssh: Could not resolve hostname f15.local: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
I can still ssh in using an IP address. So I do:

*sigh* No that's not it. I just found no mDNS service in or out of the computer 3 minutes 26 seconds after restarting it, no additional items in messages.
I recently re installed everything so I could dual boot. Well my wireless on my Ubuntu works but my wireless on my windows doesn't. I used my Toshiba recovery to re install some of the programs like Intel proset(wireless program) well it finds my router and everything but the connection is limited. When I click repair it doesn't work and proset finds my ip addresses but i don't know why it doesn't connect.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently dual booting between Linux Mint 10, and Windows Vista SP2. Wireless works fine in both these OSes, but when I quit Mint and load Windows, 70% of the time my wireless stops working.
ie, it does not detect any wireless networks nearby, althought there are tons of them.
Restarting the wireless device doesnt help, I have to restart my computer at least 4 times for wireless to start working again.
And as of now, my wireless in Linux Mint has stopped working.

I'm having some problems with wireless, it works fine on boot but after a while pretty much randomly, it can be a few days or it can be a few hours, it stops working. I'm not sure which command would tell you what and it would take a little while to debug it because like I said it's random, but if anyone knows what to do please tell me! View 9 Replies View RelatedSo my wireless card no longer works in my windows machine for some odd reason, probably due to the temporary video card I have until my actual one comes back from XFX. It works perfectly in the Ubuntu box though, so I bought a crossover cable hoping to have it automatically create a wired network that I can bridge to my router. Obviously it's not that simple.
Anyway, I have the computers connected through crossover cable and they sort of know there's supposed to be some form of networking going on (Windows has limited connectivity on "unkown network" while Ubuntu just won't connect to Auto eth0), but that's as far as I get. basically all I need is to:
1. Get the computers to connect to and communicate with each other.
2. Bridge the wired connection with the wireless one within Ubuntu so that the Windows computer can access the Internet as well as the shared files on the other computers in the wireless network.
I'm running 10.04 Lucid with Gnome desktop, if it makes a difference.
I am trying to maintain another computer that runs Ubuntu, and everything seems to be running smoothly except for one thing: the wireless. Due to distance issues, I cant use a cord, but the computer is close enough to get a signal. am using a Netgear wnda3100 wireless usb adapter. I installed Ubuntu on the computer because I heard that the device was supported in Ubuntu, and it wast after a while, the adapter is no longer recognized. I have had to reinstall multiple times, and I'm no longer in the mood to reinstall. Does anyone on the UF know hwo to fix this

I have a Sabrent USB 802.11N adapter. (I am using 64-bit Ubuntu in all below)
I plug it into a 9.04 box and it works fine. Plug it into a 9.10 box. Network manager sees it and can attach to the network, but has 0% signal strength, no internet.
Rebuild the 9.04 box with a fresh install to 9.10. 0% signal, no internet. Try 10.04 Alpha 2, 0% signal strength, no internet.
Rebuild same box down to 9.04. Works perfectly. 100% signal strength. I do all updates and then the upgrade to 9.10 using the USB. Everything works fine until the reboot. Then, USB connects, but 0% signal strength, no internet. Oh! ifconfig says the wlan0 interface is up, but it has a random ip address.
I don't mind using 9.04 because for the forseeable future, the box is just going to count aliens for Seti, but my wife wants it off the counter and I would like to upgrade someday.
I am having a problem where when i connect to a wireless network at school the internet works for maybe about 30 seconds but then stops. and everything works fine for some time. After a few hours or maybe less (if I push bandwidth to the limit) the Internet freezes. I can't even ping my router. If I disconnect and reconnect either the device or the connection via network manager , it does work for a minute only and then freezes again. If I restart Ubuntu entirely, it works again. But for a while...
It works 100% in Win7 and I have no problem at all there. But I am very annoyed that I cant have reliability in Ubuntu. I want Ubuntu as default.
It has something to do with drivers or an inner variable or buffer or something.
At least, is there any way to reset my network connection without rebooting the OS?
I tried sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart but it gives me: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

I have a problem with my wireless connection in ubuntu (natty with amd64bit) There seems to be intermittent disruption in my connection. Havent seen a pattern as yet, though it happens once a day. After that I cant get it to work at all and only restarting + reconnecting the USB device helps. Dont know what is going on.I have already read these pages : Commands and Wireless Troubleshooting.Here is my line of though1) Given that I am able to connect other devices to it while I am not able to connect through this desktop, I think the router is OK.2) I am able to work with it after restart + re-connection . And so the driver is OK and is loaded. My Acer's Wireless randomly stops working until you fully shut down and start the computer.(Not Restart but Shutdown->Powebutton) I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid.
I am wondering if anyone knows why it would stop working properly, and/or how to fix it?
And since this is a off and on problem I might not be able to provide details immediately from time of crash, since I need my computer on the wireless.
One symptom that really stands out is that the cooling fan is spinning as fast as it possibly can and processor usage is spiking around 80/200 on a process called phy0.(relevancy unknown)
As I was typing this post on my other computer, my laptop crashed and I lost the lshw -C Network output I had. If asked to, I will post the one from when it is working. Also I will post any other info you need from when I can.
I'm running a Source Dedicated Server on my Ubuntu laptop, and to connect to it via external IP from other computers in the network I need to enable loopback in my router.This was working fine, but then I disconnected my laptop for a few days, and when I came back the wireless stopped working on my Xbox. I reset the router to factory defaults, and then setup everything again. It was all working fine until I enabled loopback again and power cycled my router. Now every time I do that, the internet on Ubuntu stops working and the wireless on the Xbox stops working.
Edit: You can ignore this I guess. It seems I was actually DISABLING loopback by enabling that router option, which I guess caused this. Strange, because the first time enabling this option was the only way to get my external ip to work. Oh well, everything is fine now.
I actually have two problems (which may be related). I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo La1703 and Windows 7 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545. I only have one broadband internet dongle, so I would like to share the connection (preferably via wireless ad hoc connection, but lan would work too). The dongle is run with a program that comes with it and works fine in both Windows and Ubuntu (except that the Network Manager in Ubuntu doesn't realise that there is an internet connection).
Yesterday morning I managed ONCE to make a wireless ad hoc connection and was able to use the dongle connected on the Windows machine from the Ubuntu one (using WEP security). Since I wasn't able to reproduce this I tried with a Ethernet cable. I plugged it in and and was surfing smoothly the whole evening.
This morning I couldn't connect the computers any more. Neither with nor without cable. When the cable is plugged in the Ubuntu machine recognises a connection, but fails to connect. The windows machine just says "Unidentified Network". I don't know what I did to make the connection disappear or why my laptops refuse to communicate like friends any more. I've been trying the whole day to make them kiss and make up, but they are really stubborn.
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and my wireless card no longer works.
The card is a Dell 1450 USB a/b/g card.
lsusb sees the card. device id is 413c:8104
dmesg says that p54usb is trying to load firmware isl3887usb but that failed (error -2)
I looked in /lib/firmware and didn't find that file

I used to use Ubuntu 10.04. Never had this problem. I went back to Windows 7 and then came back to Ubuntu, and 10.04.1 was released. After some usage of wireless internet, it disconnects from the access point, and phy0 has 100% usage. [URL].. I'm not the only one with the problem. I downgraded to 9.10, and haven't had that problem since the downgrade.

Wireless works fine and speeds are great except when I download with either the browser or thru a torrent or even updates. Once I get to around 100 megs in to the file wireless stops working and the only way to get it working again is to disconnect and reconnect to the AP. I have installed the back ports and tried several other fixed to get this to work but nothing has helped. One more note this happens on 2 other wireless routers that I have tried so I know that it's not limited to my Linksys.
