Fedora Installation :: Make A Virtual Machine Using Exiting Installed Windows 7 On Laptop HD?

Dec 4, 2010

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)

I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop

Questions:

1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cleanly Remove XP From Dual Boot Laptop?

Feb 1, 2010

I recently bought a refurbished HP Compaq NC6000 which had a new installation of Win XP put on it but takes about 5 attempts to boot up as it just sat at the load screen and freezes. So I decided to install Ubuntu 9.10 as a Dual boot with the view to getting rid of XP once I had Ubuntu up and running, which I have now. So cant understand why XP wouldn't work lol. Now I would like to fully get rid of XP and just have Ubuntu as the only OS on the laptop. Currently as it is Dual Boot I have my 80gig Hard drive partitioned with both OSs on it.

Could someone point me in the right direction of how to get rid of XP cleanly so I just have Ubuntu left on my machine. I dont really want to re-install Ubuntu as I have spent the last week getting it set up, so would it be possible just to get rid of XP? Also would getting rid of XP mess up the Grub Boot loader menu?

Ubuntu :: New Installation On Windows 7 Laptop - Won't Boot

May 10, 2010

I downloaded the disk ISO torrent and burned it to a DVD. I then ran the DVD and installed Ubuntu using the Windows installer. Upon rebooting, I get the boot menu asking which OS I want to start. I select Ubuntu and it goes to a countdown to hit ESC to select boot options. Once boot starts, I get a bunch of crap on the command lines and then it hangs. The entry it hangs on is something to do with? child-(several numbers I can't remember right now). I hope that is enough for someone to identify where it's hanging during boot. what is causing this? The computer is a Toshiba Satallite L505D-S5983. You can look up the specs for that. Processor is an AMD Athlon II M300 2.0Ghz, 32-bit, with 3GB RAM. Video is AMD M860G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4100. Primary OS is Windows 7. I'll see if I can find some paper and a pen to write down the particulars of the error. I usually use my computer for note-taking, but I obviously can't do that here.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Cleanly Remove Windows XP

Jan 25, 2010

Currently I dual boot windows XP and ubuntu 9.10. However, I am quite happy about my Ubuntu installation and I am starting to think about my windows xp install as a waste of hard drive space.I wonder what's the best way to remove the windows xp install.I have 3 partitions, windows being the first, ubuntu being the second and the third being ubuntu's swap.I am not familiarized with the way the grub bootloader works so I am worried about breaking it if I just remove the first (winxp) partition via gparted and expand the second (ubuntu 9.10) fill the empty space.

For the past few years, I've been duel booting my PC with Windows Vista and Ubuntu, and for some weird unknown reason Windows Vista won't even boot up pass the update screen... so I want to get rid of it.

Every tutorial I find says put the ubuntu cd in, and press install, but my computer isn't detecting the cd at start up, so is there any other ways I can remove windows without (or another way to load the cd)? I can't access Windows at all, so.. I won't be able to do anything about that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can No Longer Install Windows On My Laptop / Solve This?

Jul 7, 2010

Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.

What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:

Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.

So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Using Dedicated Button On Laptop To Launch Windows?

I've noticed that a lot of laptops these days have fast web access buttons that quickly launch a linux os, or recovery buttons that seem to launch some other stripped down os.

So I was wondering, would it be possible to get these buttons to launch a normal ubuntu distribution? Have one button for ubuntu and the normal power button for windows?

That would be really sweet for dualbooters.

Or is it just technically/physically not possible?

The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Windows From Dual-boot System?

May 12, 2010

The thing is, i'm getting thin on hd space so i have to remove it. I have read that i could just format linux partition and than boot with windows cd and fix motherboard, but i do not have windows cd on me. Can i use another tool, that would allow me to fix the "damage" grub did? Acronis or something like that?

To avoid to complicated answers, just give me a solution that works without criptic linux commands, i get lost in that.

Also, i am actually a supporter of open source and free software, but i also think that linux is nowhere near being easy to use for the general population, no matter the microsofts conditioning. So i guess ill give it a go at 11.00 again to see whats going on

i was comforatable using programs such as mbrfix along with gparted to accomplish this task with my old computer, but that was a 32 bit windows xp machine.
