i use ubuntu a lot but there are somethings that it cant do and i need to use windows for. the thing is that i cant install windows via os cd because it won't consider my usb hdd an official hdd, it says to remove all other portable hds or something before installing so it prevents me from getting windows.are there any other ways to get windows xp and still be able to keep ubuntu?
View 2 RepliesI have been using Ubuntu for a while now on my netbook, however I have an older HP dv5 laptop that hasn't been used in a couple of years that I would like to format and install a linux distro on. Problem is that it has a very broken LCD screen and I had been previously using an external monitor with it. I had tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 on it at one point but could not progress very far into the installation due to the external monitor. I had also tried using the non-graphical installer but had little success with it as well.
I had thought of removing the HDD from the laptop and putting it into another of my laptops and installing it that way, but the specs are different between the two laptops and I figured that it would not work properly once the HDD was switched back to the older laptop. Is there any way to use an external monitor to install a newer version of Ubuntu? or perhaps is there another distro that is easily installed using an external monitor? My plan is to eventually remove the broken screen all together and only have the external monitor connected, the broken screen is a bit unsightly.
Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.
What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:
Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.
So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.
I have Dell Vostro 3300 with Intel HD integrated graphic card and Samsung SyncMaster 2343BW external monitor.

It runs on 2048x1152 full resolution, however, the picture on the monitor is blurry, it vibrates and looks like old TV with interlacing.
I tried to disable output to LVDS screen on laptop using xrandr but it doesn't help/
Previously I had HP laptop with integrated Intel and OpenSuse 11.0 and the external screen worked normally.
I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens.The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

I cannot boot windows after I installed Debian to my external hd.When I turn on my PC, GRUB prompts me to boot either Debian or Windows. It says that windows is in the right place (sda0) but if I go to boot it, I get a message that says: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."
View 4 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the disk ISO torrent and burned it to a DVD. I then ran the DVD and installed Ubuntu using the Windows installer. Upon rebooting, I get the boot menu asking which OS I want to start. I select Ubuntu and it goes to a countdown to hit ESC to select boot options. Once boot starts, I get a bunch of crap on the command lines and then it hangs. The entry it hangs on is something to do with? child-(several numbers I can't remember right now). I hope that is enough for someone to identify where it's hanging during boot. what is causing this? The computer is a Toshiba Satallite L505D-S5983. You can look up the specs for that. Processor is an AMD Athlon II M300 2.0Ghz, 32-bit, with 3GB RAM. Video is AMD M860G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4100. Primary OS is Windows 7. I'll see if I can find some paper and a pen to write down the particulars of the error. I usually use my computer for note-taking, but I obviously can't do that here.

Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dell computer that runs kubuntu very nicely. Virtualbox runs in it great and i installed windows xp in a breeze.
My dell laptop however freezes up when i try to boot my windows install cd. I'm running kubuntu on it as well (both run 10.04) and both were just freshly installed with kubuntu.
I just can't boot the cd for some reason. Laptop totally locks up and you have to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off.
It's an amd turion 64 x2 dual core processor in my laptop, whereas my desktop is an intel e5200 cpu. That's the only thing i can think of that might require special settings or something in virtualbox. I've played around with all the cpu settings in virtualbox, but every single time, it totally locks up the computer.
I've got the latest CENTOS v5.5 (disk 1 of 2) x86_64 that I've fully installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 1749 laptop (less than 30 days old). I specifically tested the media at the beginning of the install, and it was good. I'd also verified the md5sum before burning it to disc. During installation from the DVD the X Windows GUI won't appear brightly lit and easliy viewable, the screen remains (seemingly -- more on this in a moment) blank. I experienced this when hitting enter at the install boot prompt. After a subsequent text-based install (which went fine), from runlevel 3, I ensured the X Windows group was fully installed, and tried "startx". Same blank (dim!) screen behavior.
Now the seemingly blank screen has a weird twist. In changing the light in my work room (for other reasons) I noticed that there was a dim, barely visible X desktop on the screen. It is extremely faint, most definitely unusable, cannot see anything clearly enough to make out setting or try to change anything. Unable to see any mouse movement, etc... Suprisingly, a flashlight helps to make out bits and pieces, though nowhere near enough to be usable. Killing X by any method doesn't bring back the brightness, though the console is usable again as such (i.e. reboot works). I've tried the <Ctrl><Alt><F2> and the like as part of the troubleshooting, it works funcionally, but doesn't return the (normal?) screen brightness along the way.
The system came from Dell with Micro$loth Windoze 7 x64 bit and operated normal (well, as normal as Windoze can). When system-config-display is ran from the commandline, the screen clears and brings up that utility. I can point a flashlight at the screen and see some elements of what looks like a functional/working utility. I cannot visually discern the mouse to try and select anything. I've floated around the screen a lot, but haven't seen anything I can leverage to make a change to the screen/monitor being used. I believe the video is an integrated (into the CPU) graphics chip/card/whatever.

Months ago one of my computers died. I have bought a brand new one laptop, but I have a problem at the moment I wanted to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows 7: the new partition that windows 7 reserves for securing system files.
There are three partitions: Windows 7 principal, Windows 7 for securing system files (at the drive's beginning) and the recovery partition that HP puts there. Then I only have option to resize the Windows principal partition and get another principal partition. My question is if you know how to deal with this?
The other option you can help me is to advise me about some external hard drives to install ubuntu in them and don't touch the internal disk of my laptop.
i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
I've noticed that a lot of laptops these days have fast web access buttons that quickly launch a linux os, or recovery buttons that seem to launch some other stripped down os.
So I was wondering, would it be possible to get these buttons to launch a normal ubuntu distribution? Have one button for ubuntu and the normal power button for windows?
That would be really sweet for dualbooters.
Or is it just technically/physically not possible?

I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

I have an older laptop with a broken CD drive so I cannot boot the CD Drive with my ubuntu image. The laptop does not support booting from a USB drive either.So what I did was take the HD out of the laptop and using a USB enclosure plugged it in to my Win7 desktop. Then I booted from my Ubuntu CD and had Ubuntu install on the USB Drive. Took the USB drive off, and put it back in the laptop. It seems to work except it looks like it was installed with my desktop hardware. Also, every time it boots it starts at a recovery screen asking if for several boot options (including win7 which does not exist on the laptop!).

However, the laptop is so old that it does not have a working USB connection; nor does it have a CD tray. I am aware of using Wubi to install an Ubuntu system within Windows, but I was wondering if there were any ways to install a clean Ubuntu system right onto the hard drive, without Windows being required. Or, perhaps, does Wubi have some feature to allow full-drive installation?

Basically Ubuntu Live CD will see the external HDD to access and see files and folders but when on the install section, where you can choose the drive to install to, the only drive listed is the internal one. This is a Dell inspiron 5100 laptop and I have installed ubuntu 9.10 onto two different pen drives that are 8gb in size but the HDD will not be listed.
View 8 Replies View RelatedA while ago I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows XP machine. It worked ok, but I quickly realised that I had neither the hard drive space or RAM to really run a dual-boot machine properly. So, I tried to uninstall Ubuntu and return to XP. Unfortunately, I discovered that uninstalling is not that straightforward and I've ended up with a theoretical dual-boot but with the HD repartitioned so that Ubuntu takes up the smallest amount of space possible. Because of this, when the machine boots, I still get a GRUB boot screen where I have to manually select XP to continue with the boot. (Ubuntu is still the default boot OS - I don't know how to change this!)
I've now decided to install Ubuntu again but this time on an external USB hard drive. In my head (and this could be wrong) this will give me the option to run the machine with Ubuntu if the external HD is connected or run XP if it is not.I've seen several tutorials about how to do this, but none seem to address the situation where GRUB is the boot loader already. Some tutorials tell me to disconnect the internal HD before attempting to install Ubuntu on the external. Do I really need to do this? Another alternative I've heard of is to download a LIVE cd to the external drive and then run the OS from that instead of performing a full install. Any thoughts?

When the laptop's lid is open - it works just fine When the laptop's lid is closed - the VGA output content is gone. i didn't find tin the monitors' menu nor in the power menu, an entry where I can ask or set the VGA output to be active all the time.
