View 6 RepliesI have been searching around and found lots of details of how to fix a dual boot situation gone wrong but I have not run across a guide or steps on how to install Windows & FC12 the correct way.I have to reinstall my computer any way for other reasons so I am going to reinstall with either XP or Win7 (leaning towards 7) and Fedora 12. I can dedicate a drive to each OS no problem and I can imagine how I would install each on it's own drive, but not quite sure what to use as a boot manager?
View 7 Replies View RelatedIt seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Fedora 11 on my i386 using the 6 CD set that I downloaded. Since my system has only 128M of RAM, the text install mode was used. The 1st CD installation seemed to work OK. After 181 out of 181 packages were installed, the system rebooted and did not ask for me to insert the other CDs. now when my system comes up, it is always in text mode.
Q. Is there a command I can use to have the remaining CD's installed so I can install the graphics system?
I made a clean installation of F15 on my laptop, is a Qosmio x505, it has an nvidia M360, so I download the nvidia drivers and intall it separatly. To install the nvidia drivers I change the runlevel with the commandln -sf /lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target /etc/systemd/system/default.targetAnd then, change it again to the graphical mode with the commandln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.targetEverything seems ok, but the system only boot in text mode. I can load the Gnome with the command startx without problems, but how can I made that it loads the Gnome automatically?

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn some computers I can not use graphical installation interface of Fedora 9. So I use text mode.I would like to have a very small installation with very few installed packages, so at package selection I uncheck everything. In text mode installation there is no option to customize installed packages down to package names. I can only check main themes. So I uncheck everything and installation starts. This method results over 400 packages to bo installed... This is too much with many unnecessary packages. If I use graphical interface and uncheck every package name at custom package selection then about 150 packages will be installed. Is there any good way to use textmode installation and don't install more than 400 packages?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an older PC that was running F11 without any problems. At some point I started updating to F12 through the web and got a a nice black screen that pretty much hosed my OS. (Not a big deal). So I went and downloaded the F12 Live CD which did the same thing.., at some point just after install the screen would be black and reset is the only option.Got the full F12 32-bit DVD and during the installation I get: "X Startup Failed,Falling back to text mode."Finishing the install I get to a nice black log-in prompt so I can log-in as root. From there I cant do much as I am a n00d in Linux to some extent and my network doesn't work
My video card is a Geforce FX 5200 which installed and worked just fine under F11 (without me doing anything but basic install and Ubuntu 9.10)
Are Installation Guides available for download?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some crackling sound I thought I would remove some ALSA drivers and re-install them. Somehow, in the process, my computer rebooted itself and I am stuck with the classic "ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode".
Attempting to actually get graphics does not work. A CTRL-ALT-F7 yeilds the ubuntu loading screen with dots filling but it stays there eternally. I can however access my console login and am able to execute terminal commands.
I have tried a few things to no avail such as:
sudo apt-get update
sudp apt-get install nvidia-current
I run a Nvidia Geforce250.
just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.
First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.
I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes. Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.
Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.
Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.
I have just been using distro's that install with a graphical interface, but some of the distro's forum members recommend are installed text mode only. How difficult is a text mode install

how to change it direct from shell instead of the stupid GUI
I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10. When booting, there is this "Ubuntu" writing on purple background and dots which are lighting up in order. On my machine this is in text mode. In 10.04 it was graphical. What can I do to have it again graphical?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.
For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.
I'm some what new to ubuntu and i would really like to start using it as my main operating system and get rid of windows. The first problem i face here is that I am unable to install Ubuntu using the normal gui mode.As soon as i select the option to install ubuntu the files starts loading and then the screen goes blank.. but the monitor is still live. So i installed ubuntu using the text based installer.. everything went fine, i installed the system and at boot loader i selected my Os but still the old demon comes in "Blank screen". I've tried all the related forums and tried all the options best to my knowledge, but its still the same.. I am not even able to get a command prompt/terminal. I know that this is a problem with my ATI (i can hear the sighs!!!!!) video card. Now I know that Ubuntu is being loaded cause i can hear the welcome sound of Ubuntu(drums sound).

View 5 Replies View RelatedIt has been a few days I'm struggling to install Kubuntu 10.10 on my computer. I started with the normal CD, burnt it and boot the computer. Halfway through the graphical installer, I got a black screen and system froze up. I tried several things (including running the installer with nomodest and single options) but didn't help.
Then I downloaded the alternate CD and started to install in the text mode. I could get passed installing the kernel and programs but right after adding a user/password, the text installer crashed with a black screen and system froze!
Now, I already have Windows 7 64 bits on this computer and have done all kinds of memory/hardware tests on it and it works fine. The CPU, GPU and the case is well ventilated so nothing is overheating. I also run heavy loads on Windows (MATLAB, Chess engine tournaments) for hours and hours and never had a crash. So I guess the hardware is fine.
Here are the specs of the system if it can help:
CPU: i7 950 GPU: ATI HD5870 (model Gigabyte GV-R587UD-1GD) RAM: 12 GB DDR-1666 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) Optical drive: Liteon ihbs112 USB Mouse and Keyboard
Windows is installed on a SSD and I have 2x 2.0TB hard disks for data. Kubunto, however was being installed on a separate and dedicated 200GB hard disk. During installation process I format and partition this drive. I didn't disconnect/disable the other drives. In BIOS, all SATA controllers are set to run in AHCI mode.
My primary suspect is the graphics card. However, why it would ever crash even in the text mode? Although it works fine in Windows even with heavy gaming so graphics card is itself stable.
I'm using couple of Intel Core i7 based workstations. Here is one such example:Processor: Core i7-870 (Lynfield) Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD6RAM: Corsair DDR3-1600 - 8GB (4 sticks). Graphics: Sapphire Toxic ATI 5850 - 2GB - DDR5Am always used to 32-bit Linux installation. Now I would like to go with the FC14 64-bit on this workstation. My question is:a) How different would be a FC 64-bit compared to 32-bit (8GB RAM issues I faced in Windows 7 32-bit)b) What would be potential problems during the installation and/or post installation. I get these questions in my mind because of Motherboard and Graphics card support and also thinking about applications (issues) on FC14.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI originally installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my old 32bit Pentium Hp/Compaq dc7100 business desktop, which also has Windows XP installed. It worked fine with the gnome interface, showing the desktop on boot. Over the past year, I used the built in update manager to update the system and apps to 10.04, then 10.10, and a couple of days ago to further 10.10 updates.Last time I booted, it performed a disk check, then booted to a text-mode login-prompt, like on the old UNIX systems before the X gui system got developed.
I have no clue how to launch gnome or x11 and get my desktop back. I don't have the knowledge (or patience) to operate Linux from a command prompt in text-only mode. Will someone tell me how to get UBUNTU 10.10 to launch x11 gnome and show my desktop?I remember having the same problem when I first updated to 10.10, but I don't recall what I did to get the desktop to appear on the display.
I had the bug for a Boxee system. After looking at a bunch of different small HTPC options, I settled on the Zotac ZBOXHD-ND22-U system. Highlights of the box: Dual-core 1.2 Ghz CULV CPU ION chipset, handles up to 8GB of DDR3 (PC3-8500) 2.5" SATA bay
6xUSB2 ports, front SD slot HDMI port, supporting up to 7.1 audio
After a good bit of research, I opted to install Maverick instead of Lucid, since Maverick includes the required ALSA 1.0.23 release. This isn't an utterly complete cookbook. I'm doing this from memory... Here's what I did, roughly in order:
1. Install Maverick via a USB stick (built with Unetbootin). I selected Maverick x86, so I wouldn't have to muck around with the whole 32-bit flash on amd64 business, particularly in an embedded environment.
2. Removed gdm - we'll be booting directly into Boxee here. aptitude remove gdm, also let it remove the dependencies. Later, I went back and removed extraneous packages, like all of the gnome desktop stuff. Seemed fairly pointless to keep it around.

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS

When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". At this step, the installation procedure tell me an error. During this error, in the other console, I've this:
