I have rescued a HD from a computer and i want to connect it in my machine so i can and have extra storage space. i connected it before but got directed to bios settings. I think there is the need to set a jumper at some point? My old IBM HD has a lot of different jumper possibilities in the back, of which i know nothing...

Recently one of my 8.04 updates included a Firefox update that is causing my computer to freeze up and overheat on occasion when I am forced to use my Firefox browser!
When it happens I have to unplug my computer because even the force quit does not work when this happens.
Is there a simple way to get rid of all of my old Firefox plug-ins and add ons?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use my old computer as an NAS, so I remove the monitor after I installed linux on it (disconnect vga cable). I use ssh to control the machine and it works fine. Until some day, after kernel/softare upgrade or messing up some configs, I cannot connect to it through ssh, then I have to plug the monitor back, but the monitor says "No input signal". So I have to restart the computer WITH the monitor connected, and the monitor's back!
I think the computer/linux kernel doesn't detect the monitor plug-in event. So how can I start my linux box without a monitor, but when it goes wrong I can still plug my monitor (vga) back and use the console.
Edit: just one pci-e video card, has dvi, vga, tv/out (s-video)
Edit2: Xorg is not running. I just need the console (CTRL+ALT+F1). The problem is, if the machine booted without a monitor connected, it won't give me a pseudo terminal after I attach the vga cable while it's running. Clearly the monitor is not auto detected as usb device. I'm wondering how to let the monitor auto detected.
My mouse isn't working when I plug it in, it's a USB Logitech Wireless Mouse and it doesn't work unless I boot with it plugged in then it stops working eventually.

I have tried using Synaptic and the Software Center, all installs go fine, no errors, but I cant see them in the CCSM. Everything is working very well and bug free for me. Not having a problem at all, its just that I am missing the Snowflakes, Leaves ect., and some extra effects for windows animations that I like.
Things I'v tried: Uninstalled from Synaptic and reinstalled extras plug-ins Looked in the The Software Center (everything says its installed) Yelled at Computer

Long time lurker here. I regret the fact that my first post is a request for information, but I am totally stumped. A while back, I saw a photo of a small Linux server that looked like a laptop adapter (i.e., a plug, a cord, and a 2"x3"x8"-ish box). It was a very simple box that could be used as a server, with a network jack as the only I/O. just a quick knowledge of my linux ability, i don't know anything about installing tar.gz files. so i preferbly a debian/ubuntu install package would be perfect . but i will work with whatever is provided.
The Firefox 3.6.7 update this morning disabled most of the plug-ins that were installed and working. This has happened a few times and is a real problem for those of us who depend on the plug-ins to perform our work. es, I suppose it would be possible to manually predetermine the compatibility of each plug-in prior to installing an update. But that is very time consuming, painful, and prone to error.
There needs to be a pre-install process that will do those checks and warn the user of any incompatibilities - then allow them to choose whether to install the update. I never have understood why the current "shotgun" approach was chosen. It breaks many things.

When I was on 11.0 I just plugged in my flash drive and it would show up on my desktop, now I got nothin'. The sd would open up in f-spot but not anymore. I'm not too smart so I'm pretty sure it's something simple that the all powerful geniuses in the linux community can fix. I am running in gnome on an emachines w3609 with intel devices.

However, the plugin it offered me was incompatible with my build, an AMD Turion 64 X2. I tried downloading some other Macromedia Flash Plug-ins from synaptic and none of them have worked. Since then I've been using vista primarily. I enjoy using ubuntu alot more, especially with all the work I put into my desktop and getting compiz the way I wanted it, but if I can't stream videos then there's simply no reason for me to use ubuntu. I don't have to go back to vista.

They have 4 pin connectors, so I was just going to plug 2 of them into the 2 available fan headers, and then plug the last one into a molex connector considering that they all come with molex adaptors. However, according to this site, your not supposed to because its too much strain on the motherboard? I am not (never have never will) overclocking so is that just for overclockers? My motherboard manual says it will work with 12 volt fans which are what these are.

I'm not able to use lmms with vst plugin.
Here is what I did:
I downloaded url.unzipped it into /home/georges/vst-plugin/ because this is my vst plugin directory then went to instrument plugins,dragged vestige into song-editor clicked on Default preset clicked on Open other VST-plugin selected 4Front Piano.dll
clicked ok, and I get this error popup:

What I'd like to have is alsa mixer enable microphone on plug-in and mute it on plug-out.
It's because when enabled it produces unwanted noise in the speakers, so I have to manually turn it off once I'm done with using skype and turn on again when I get a call. I'd like to automate that process.

My problem here is the following: whenever I plug or unplug the AC cable in or out of my laptop it goes on hibernation, which is very annoying indeed. Sometimes I just want to plug it because I'm downloading something and my battery is running out.I would like to add that when my laptop goes into hibernation, and I try to bring it back up nothing happens, only the fans go on, but no activity other than that, at which point always just end up shutting the computer down cold and restarting it, which is getting to be a huge problem
