View 1 RepliesIm looking for a mp3 player that works out of the box with opensuse 11.04. By out of the the box i mean the the mp3 player will connect via usb and will work automatically with no need for drivers or command line changes. Ideally a player composed like a usb key in the sense that the player should have no moving parts (will be using the player in the gym a lot so player cant be fragile). I live in europe by the way.
View 8 Replies View RelatedGreetings from Arizona, USA:Is there a true plug-and-play USB wireless adapter that is known to work well with Ubuntu 11.04 (32-bit)? Background: * HP Pavilion zv6000 or zv6100 (Older notebook being used for business purposes. It came with Windows XP Home Edition.)* Installed Ubuntu 11.04 (32-bit)* PROBLEM: Don't have WiFi as well as another item or so. Novice Ubuntu user.* Ran this in terminal: sudo lspci* 03:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless Lan Controller (rev 03)I have not performed a lot of research on this problem, but what little I've done tells me I could spend a fair amount of time trying to get WiFi to work on this notebook. If a user-tested, literal plug-and-play USB wireless adapter exists for Ubuntu 11.04, it might be cheaper time-wise to just buy it rather than try to get my existing hardware to work.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to play a Quicktime stream and can't figure it out. When I try to play it either in Firefox or Movie Player, it says I need a text/html decoder plugin, but doesn't find one from the autosearch. Downloaded Ubuntu Restricted Extras from the Software Center, but no luck (don't know if I'm supposed to "do" something after that). MPlayer doesn't work on my computer, and I've also downloaded Avidemux, thinking maybe I'd get the right codec or plugin, but again, no luck. I am on Ubuntu 10.04 on an Eee PC, if it makes a diff.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've bought this remote control that sais it works in Vista, XP etc. without any driver. Basically it has a bunch of buttons that replace the mouse and a bunch of others that replace basic keyboard functions (arrows, enter, escape). It has a USB IR receiver so I thought I could simply use it as a lirc remote in Ubuntu.
However, it sais absolutely nothing on it except for "PCremote" so during lirc installation I have no idea what to choose. And, interestingly, I accidentally discovered that it works in Ubuntu, too, out of the box. Controlling the mouse and acting like a keyboard. Is there a way I can forfeit current functionality and just get it to work as a customizable lirc remote? Or even better, keep current functionality but change it only for certain apps (xbmc, vlc etc)?
You have .exe files to install stuff. Even tho I have used ndiswrapper in the past I can't remember how now. I've got a nice old laptop with a nice install of SUSE 10 that does everything I want except connect to the internet. I've got about 1 more day of patience remaining before I have to revert to the hated Ws. I even got a supposed "plug and play" Asus usb-n10, but have not been able to work out the install.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was just thinking about installing an operating system like ubuntu or ubuntu server on an external harddrive. this being possible , i would like to know if we can use the external drive to plug into any machine and run my ubuntu by just changing the needed bios mods in that system. and without further having to install the necessary hardware specific devices into my os.
Because each machine would have its own hardware set, how would the os handle it or would it have to install the necessary drivers and so on everytime it comes across a different system from the immediate previous hardware it was used with. and i know this was why laptops were invented even maybe to have that portability to use with but this without a laptop, just an external hard drive that can make up and help us use the hardware at hand with ease without any installations of any kind.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an anime series (about 24 episodes, each 325-350 megabytes each) encoded in .mkv format, high quality (1280x720). It took quite some time to download this series, however no matter what I do, I cannot get the files to play correctly under Ubuntu. I have tried several different media players, including VLC, Movie player, and Mplayer, and none work correctly. VLC will play the first 15-20 seconds fine, and then stop the video and go back to the beginning. I however, do realize that my laptop isn't high-spec, and isn't really built for HD video playback (1.6ghz single core athlon CPU, 4 gigs of ram, integrated radeon x1250 graphics chip.)
I can play these files on my system and have them play correctly? (Without lag or stuttering?) Also the anime is subtitled, so I would want to make sure the subs work correctly, and preferably have the audio in sync with the video.
Today while browsing the web and attempting to listen to a mp3 file on the site of a musician, this laptop with Lucid CRASHED badly! It went into a black screen and the only solution was a reboot! I am not a masochist, but I could repeat the crash a couple of times just to verify it.
This is the worst crash that I have seen on GNU/Linux! I expect things to go down in a more controlled way: maybe first the crash of a plug-in, then the crash of a web browser, eventually the crash of a windows manager. But I don't like seeing that playing an mp3 is leading to kernel crash on what is supposed to be a LTS-release!
Any observations of similar behavior or hints on the cause? Is it possible that the crash is related to intel graphics 85x on this system that are now very problematic on Lucid?
By the way, the music file in question is probably not malformed and plays perfectly on Mac and Windows. I am digging into system logs to try to find any record of the problem. For the the record: I've been around Ubuntu since 5.04, on Linux since 2003, on Unix since 1988, and on computers since 1979.
I do a bit of script writing, and part of this involves reading the text aloud and reacting to audio cues. What I'd love to do is set up a method of playing audio files at whim based on a general shortcut. So, say if I pressed <Super>C1, I could play ~/Music/cue1.mp3, <Super>C2 would be ~/Music/cue2.ogg etc.
Currently the closest I've got is using the terminal and a modified .bashrc to play via VLC's ncurses.
Code:
alias cue1="vlc -I ncurses ./Music/cue1.mp3"
Obviously this isn't very near to what I want. Entering a Keyboard Shortcut using the usual methods (xbindkeys, gconf-editor, the KeyShort Preferences GUI) to run
Code:
vlc -I ncurses ./Music/cue1.mp
doesn't play anything. Is it possible to launch these kinds of commands as shortcuts, or am I hoping for too much? My Google trawls have been pretty fruitless. I'm running Lucid, btw.
After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...
Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.
I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]
Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.

However, clicking the play button does nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem on a few flash games (a couple of EA's sports management games on Facebook, and the Pokemon Dream World.) When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.
Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?
I'm on 32 bit Kubuntu Lucid, firefox is my browser, and it's the official flash plugin.
