View 2 RepliesI've just installed a nas on my system. All is ok apart from Kaffeine. It will play the file from the home dir, a usb disc but not for some reason the same file over the network located on a nas. It come up with the following error message:
The connection was configured as a MS Windoze network drive.via dolphin. No problems with compressed, pdf or doc files or copying etc just playing an avi with kaffeine.
I use my old computer as an NAS, so I remove the monitor after I installed linux on it (disconnect vga cable). I use ssh to control the machine and it works fine. Until some day, after kernel/softare upgrade or messing up some configs, I cannot connect to it through ssh, then I have to plug the monitor back, but the monitor says "No input signal". So I have to restart the computer WITH the monitor connected, and the monitor's back!
I think the computer/linux kernel doesn't detect the monitor plug-in event. So how can I start my linux box without a monitor, but when it goes wrong I can still plug my monitor (vga) back and use the console.
Edit: just one pci-e video card, has dvi, vga, tv/out (s-video)
Edit2: Xorg is not running. I just need the console (CTRL+ALT+F1). The problem is, if the machine booted without a monitor connected, it won't give me a pseudo terminal after I attach the vga cable while it's running. Clearly the monitor is not auto detected as usb device. I'm wondering how to let the monitor auto detected.
I want the volume to change when I plug in headphones, because my netbook's speakers are really quiet but the earbuds I have are really loud when I plug them in. I'm running Ubuntu Lucid Netbook Edition on an Asus eeePC 1005HA, if that's important.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've set up OpenVPN on a Linux server. All my Internet traffic goes through the VPN from that server. I'm running Windows 7 at home. I noticed in Wireshark that DNS queries are not going through the encrypted tunnel, but instead directly to my ISP's designated DNS servers.
To overcome this, I tried pushing DNS for OpenVPN from the server to my computer, and also inputting the DNS address in my wireless adapter's configuration options. This appears to have secured the DNS leak, but is it the proper way to go about it? If I didn't push the DNS address from the server to the client and only set the DNS in the client's wireless adapter, then I couldn't visit any website. And if I just pushed the DNS but didn't set it in the adapter, then some DNS requests still leaked to the ISP's DNS servers.
I want to run a script when the switch goes down and an other when it goes up. Is there an easy way to pull this off in Debian (preferably with no other than system tools)? I suppose there is no difference (in the OS point of view) between unplugging ethernet cable and the switch losing power.
On an event I get lines like these in the syslog:
Jun 15 17:49:41 debian kernel: [ 5506.956130] igb: eth1 NIC Link is Down
...
Jun 15 17:49:45 debian kernel: [ 5511.168788] igb: eth1 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: RX/TX
In FreeBSD you can pipe log messages (pre-filtered by regex patterns) to a program. What is the easiest way to replicate this on Debian (with as little additional software as possible)?
I have a GuruPlug computer running Debian Lenny.
I put a perl script on it with the following shabang line.
#!/root/bin/perl -w
When I run the program from the command line I get the following message.
guru:~/bin$ ./ms_sync.pl
-bash: ./ms_sync.pl: /root/bin/perl: bad interpreter: Permission

Using Windows 7's superbar, I can select/launch the 2nd application group by <Win>+<2>. We have DockbarX in GNOME, which is nice (grouping the windows like Windows 7), but it doesn't enable the <Win>+<2> style keybaord shortcuts. This is not restricted to making Linux like Windows. But I just find the <Win>+<2> style shortcut very useful. Are there similar ways in Linux to quickly switch between specific apps without pressing <Alt>+<Tab> many many times?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing Linux, I have several backup levels. One of them is a periodical sector by sector copy (using dd) of my laptop harddisk to an external USB disk. Yes, I have other backups too, like remote rsync. This approach (the disk dd) is OK when cloning a HDD with no LVM volumes, since I can plug the external disk anytime and mount the partitions simply mounting /dev/sdb* instead of /dev/sda*. Trivial and handy.
Today I moved ALL my harddisk (including the /boot) to LVM. Everything works fine. I will stress it for a couple of days, and then I will do a sector by sector copy to my external harddisk. Now I have a problem, I guess.
If in the future I plug the external USB HDD to recover any file, the OS will detect a duplicate LVM configuration, with the same name and the same UUID. Even doing a vgrename (which LVM would be renamed, the internal HDD or the external HDD?), the cloned UUID will not change. Is there any command to change name and UUID? Ideally I would clone the HDD and then change the LVM group name and its UUID, but I don't know how to do it. Another related issue would be... In the past I have booted my laptop using the external disk, using the BIOS boot menu and changing GRUB entries manually to boot from /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda. But now my current GRUB configuration boots directly from a LVM logical volume, something like: set root='(LVM-root)' in my grub.cfg. So... What is going to happen with duplicated volumes?
I am running a server in Dell which has RAID1 and hot plug 2 disks. It's been running for a while, but I was thinking it may crash anytime. So got a spare one, and wanted to test it how it works.I have never done this before. Can I simply, on a running machine, unplug the Disk 2 and connect the new Disk there? (Without interrupting the service as a silent mode?) Or does it have to be shutdown first, and unplugged, reinstalling all software/centos/etc etc? How do you do this update? Also how do you know when you replaced the disk? Do you have anything special to monitor that disk 1 or disk 2 is end of life?

I'm running Kaffeine on openSUSE 11.2. (The version of Kaffeine is whatever was included in that distribution.)
I noticed Kaffeine does not play wmv files. An "error" message appears with no details when I try to play one.
So I followed the instructions in the Kaffeine FAQ on how to add support for wmv: It's supposed to be a simple matter of downloading the win32 codecs and extracting to /usr/lib/win32 (see FAQ | Kaffeine - KDE Media Player).
Still doesn't work. I tried extracting the codecs to usr/local/lib/win32 (this folder is mentioned in codecs README as another possible location).
I use Kaffeine Version 1.0-pre2 and xine 0.99.6 on Fedora 12 64-bit. If I try to watch HD-channels (such as Das Erste HD, ZDF HD, arte HD), there is no sound (or just a few seconds). I read some times, that setting the audio buffer to 750 and the video buffer to 1000 should solve the problem

I had a look at No TV in Kaffeine, but I'm lost. I have an HDTV wonder card. I have installed dvb, ffmpeg, w32-codecs, etc. I am able to watch video/hear audio.
I have updated the scan data in kaffeine, adjusted device 1 tab to my area, but when I open the channels window and scan, it just goes through the motions and lists nothing. Here i partial output from:

I am having an issue with Kaffeine. It recognizes my DVB tuner fine and I can watch television but the only problem is that I have no sound. Videos play fine, in Kaffeine, I can see the picture and hear the sound, but when I view television, the sound is quiet. I think that there is some issue with unusual sound codecs being used here in New Zealand, as I had a lot of problems trying to play my recorded tv programs in other software, when I was a Windows user, I would often get the picture but no sound. Mythtv works fine for me, I get sound and picture no worries, it's just with Kaffeine I have the sound issues. The audio channel is greyed out, when I click on a channel and then click on edit. I suspect that this may mean that the sound codec that Freeview television uses, in New Zealand, may not be supported in Kaffeine.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI found a forum for Kaffeine but I wonder if there is actual documentation? Although I can play any video or stream with it, I do not understand many things like time shifting or program guide. There are config links in the menu but they really only have 2 or 3 options. Nothing about Kaffeine is explained. I would think that a program that works so well and is so popular would be documented.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 13.37 installed on three PCs. Two nvidia (propriertary driver from Slackbuilds) and one ATI (radeon dirver). Kaffeine 1.1 installed from Slackbuild on all three machines. Runs fine on the ATI box and on one of the nvidia boxes, but fails to start (or provide any messages when command-line started) on the other nvidia box.The box on which it will not start is also the box that has a DVB card in it - which is why I particularly want kaffeine to run there as it has a really easy interface to the TV card which ran just fine under Slack 13.1.
My gut feeling it that the problem is connected to the presence of the TV card which is somehow srewing up initialisation of kaffeine, but (other than removing the card physically) I am not sure how to test this or test whether the card is working. lspci and dmesg shows that it has recognised during boot-up.Any ideas on how I should investigate this? Or on how I can bypass the problem by configuring vlc (which runs fine for dvds and video clips) to view DVB output?
You have .exe files to install stuff. Even tho I have used ndiswrapper in the past I can't remember how now. I've got a nice old laptop with a nice install of SUSE 10 that does everything I want except connect to the internet. I've got about 1 more day of patience remaining before I have to revert to the hated Ws. I even got a supposed "plug and play" Asus usb-n10, but have not been able to work out the install.

Code:
kaffeine: relocation error: /usr/lib/libphonon.so.4: symbol pa_ext_device_manager_read, version PULSE_0 not defined in file libpulse.so.0 with link time reference
I updated / installed phonon Pulse. Now when I insert a DVD and select Kaffeine. I get this error:
Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]
Now I have no sound.
I had a fully working fc12 using Kaffeine to get DVB-T using a Nova T-500.
After installing and updating latest fc13 (and Kaffeine) I cannot get it to see the TV. It has scanned Ok and the TV card is detected OK in warm state.
As I also had no sound I looked at the differences in the sound GUI between my fc12 and 13.
Kaffeine is detected in fc12 but not shown in fc13.
Just tried Totem Movie Player and tried to tune the DVB-T but it gives a gnome DVB failure, so my problem is in fc13/Gnome.
Could someone advise me as wht I can try so that I can continue using Fedora?

What it all means in very simple English and what an ignoramus can do to put it right? I should perhaps explain that although I have been using SuSE since version 9 I am totally incapable of understanding terminal work. I have so far managed, to a large extent, by trial and error but it seems that as versions get better it gets more and more difficult to fix problems. The help provided by OpenSUSE is very good but as one gets older it gets more and more difficult to remember instructions so that they can be followed - you need two pc's one being fixed and a working one to provide the instuctions side by side!
After wrestling with Kaffeine on openSUSE 11.2, I thought I had solve the issue I had with it and I got a new error as described below:
Original Issue: Kaffeine will not play a dvd. Error: Cannot find input plugin for MRL
Then: error no longer appeared, but I got a new error.
New error: "Cannot find demux plugin for MRL "dvd:///dev/sr0""
Of course, I could install Demux, but what is this plugin business? Any ideas? Please, if possible include a little information about what MRL refers to.
I am just starting with Opensuse , been on Ubuntu for a few years . I am getting Kaffeine to work with my HVR 1600 . I had to add the firmware to /lib/firmware , then install the xine and ffmpeg files . Now tv scans channels and plays . Actually it plays great . I had skipping problems in Ubuntu with Me-tv , not so with Kaffeine .
