1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?
2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?
3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?
4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?
5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?
I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.
Fedora :: Printing With F12 - Printer Stops After Generic Error
Apr 28, 2010I've recently decided to migrate the infrastructure in my workplace from ubuntu to fedora, every thing except the printers went perfectly. When I try to print as an user It just throws an generic error and stops, as a root it doesn't even show the error.

Ubuntu :: Root Admin - Loading The Printer Drivers For New Lexmark Printer
Jul 6, 2010Ubuntu 10.04 and have a problem with loading the Linux printer drivers for my new Lexmark printer. When I try to load up the printer driver downloaded from the Lexmark site I am asked to enter a root administrator password, but when I enter the password I used to setup the OS it will not accept it. I have reviewed the "sudo" terminal password info, but as I am a newbie I was concerned about wrecking the installation.

Oct 19, 2010I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?
Fedora Hardware :: NVIDIA Generic 6 Series Drivers?
Sep 25, 2010I've done my best to fix this but, after encountering numerous problems, it's become apparent that while I might be a pretty good Windows user, I don't know bugger all about Linux and evidently you need to be 1337 just to install drivers, but anyway...
I have a NVIDIA 6800 GT graphics card, old but still functioning properly. Fedora 13 didn't install any drivers automatically, so I went to the NVIDIA site to see if they supported their cards under Linux. They did... sort of. It seems they only provide a 'generic' Linux display driver for x86 architectures, which wasn't preferable but it was the best I was going to get, so I downloaded it. Their site provides a setup Readme, but I've run into countless problems and finally I've come up against one that it doesn't document.
First was the fact that I couldn't install it with X window running. I assume this is the base UI for Linux, so I rebooted into run level 3 and tried again, at which point it complained about a 'nouveau' process still running. I added the line rdblacklist=nouveau to my boot so that this wouldn't be enabled, but then it complains that my GCC is missing. So, I install the GNU Cross Compiler with the Fedora RPM manager, but now the setup complains that my 'kernel source tree' can't be found and asks me to install it - but what exactly is a kernel source tree anyway?

Oct 15, 2010uestion by saying that I don't know anything about how video drivers work under Ubuntu or Linux in general.My situation is as follows: I have installed Ubuntu on a portable hard drive for use on multiple computers, so as such, I chose not to install drivers for a specific video card as I can't be sure of the hardware of the computers I will be using it on. Everything was working fine, but while setting some wine games up, I have managed to "break" my video drivers/video config so now some games give me an error. I have been told that the quickest way to get rid of this error is to reinstall video drivers, but I am lost, as I can't find out what drivers, if any, I have installed. So my question is: how could I go about resetting the configuration and generic drivers that came with the Lucid?

Aug 16, 2010I have bought a generic gamepad from China quite a while ago, which worked well on Windows XP (it's HID-compliant). However, after finally being able to switch back to OpenSuSE, I now find that I can't get it to work.
I am currently running OpenSuSE 11.3, with GNOME. I've used the "modprobe joydev" command, and if I run lsusb, I get the following:

The last one is my gamepad, and it's apparently pretty well-known. I have also tried the "cat /dev/input/js1" trick, and it does indeed show garbage when I press buttons or move the analog sticks, so in fact it should be functioning properly. However, I can't get it work. In Tux Racer it simply doesn't recognize any joystick/gamepad, and Racer (the simulator) tells me that 0 joysticks have been found.
I have been searching for a solution for quite a while now, but all topics seem to be outdated (older OpenSuSE versions, listing commands that don't exist and are nowhere to be found...)
how to get this gamepad to work? Even if it means without the analog sticks, if it at least works a bit (I'll just do without the vibration, which is apparently very hard to get to work under Linux).

Any help would be really good. My other Del 1110 mono laser worked first time!

Sep 29, 2010I was curious as to if there was a way to install a 32bit driver on a 64bit system. I have a dell v515w printer and the only driver they provide for it is a 32bit driver. I was wandering if anyone may know of a way to install it or if anyone knows of any other available drivers. I have searched everywhere for i dont know how long and came up with nothing i have tried installing the 32bit libraries and it didnt help.. and going back a 32bit system is out of the question due to ubuntu not wanting to load.. i think it has something to due with my hard drive being to large... but im using ubuntu 10.10 maverick 64bit...

I tried the drivers supplied by Dell but they all gave dependency errors. Since Internet is not working I can't resolve any.
