Debian Configuration :: Exim Doesn't Deliver Local Mail; Files In /var/mail Empty?

Jan 28, 2010

I cannot get exim4 to actually deliver any "local delivery only; not on a network".But whatever I do in the config, all mail gets frozen with entries in the log file like:"root@empty R=nonlocal: Mailing to remote domains not supported"Maybe the problem is that there is no fqdn for the computer (and will never be). How can I enable local mail delivery?

Ubuntu :: Sidebar Does Not Keep My Chosen Applications / Fix It?

May 22, 2011

I recently upgraded to 11.04 and the sidebar seems to not be functioning as one would expect.

I removed unwanted applications that come by default and added my own applications by clicking "Keep In Launcher".

After a reboot the sidebar returns to default applications. I did a quick Google search but wasn't able to find anyone else reporting the problem.

Has anyone heard of this happening to anyone else and can you think of anyway to fix it?

Ubuntu :: Lsusb Won't Find Hard Drive After Boot?

Feb 24, 2010

I've been having some trouble getting my two external USB hard drives to mount on boot. They are not recognized by lsusb after a boot, but after they are power cycled or unplugged & replugged they will show up in lsusb and mount. One odd thing I noticed was that when one of the drives was moved to a different port before booting it would be recognized for that boot onlyI have tried adding usb_storage to /etc/modules and doing a update-initramfs to my kernel (2.6.31-14) to no avail.

Since I started having this problem, I have reinstalled ubuntu on a different internal drive, and this did not fix it.I'm not sure if this matters, but the UUIDs of the two drives are identical. I would try reformatting one of them but its quite inconvenient. My /etc/fstab is set up to mount them using their labels (ex1 and ex2) rather than the UUID, and I can mount them both at the same time

Ubuntu :: Boots Into Wrong OS When Chosen From GRUB

Apr 28, 2011

My soundcard seems to have problems working with a certain game in windows xp so I decided to create a different installation of windows xp to use with onboard sound drivers instead. I had a backup of my clean current install on a dvd, so thought I would use this to speed up the procedure. I have two hard drives - the sata has my normal windows boot on and my ext4 ubuntu installation. The id drive has only files on. So I decided to shrink the partion on the ide drive using gparted and then create a new primary partition. I then installed my backup to this newly created partition.

At first it did not appear in the boot manager. Then I did a sudo update-grub and it now does, however whichever windows installation I now select from the grub, it always seems to boot into the same (old) installation, rather than the new one I installed from a backup. How I can actually get it to boot into this new installation? It might be due to windows boot ini settings or disc / partition flags or whatever, as I tried fiddling with those.

Ubuntu :: GTK Apps Ignoring Chosen GTK Theme?

Nov 28, 2009

Since this morning, in a normal Gnome session, all of my GTK apps, menus and icons (except, oddly for the Gnome panel) are using the same drab and boring style that they use when they're running as root. Which they're not.No one else uses this computer, and I've made no changes to any GTK-based or affecting settings, except to try to change the GTK controls, with no effect at all. So I cannot understand why this is happening.

General :: Lsusb / Lspci List Devices For Which System Has No Drivers?

Jul 20, 2010

I have been administering linux systems for years now, but usually they are commodity boxes and as a result I rarely have driver problems, short of needing to install some "restricted" or "proprietary" driver package, or manually installing the nvidia binary drivers back in the day. However, one question to which I have never picked up a straight answer regards common troubleshooting practice. Will lsusb and lspci list device for which a system has no drivers (kernel modules)? I am trying to install a webcam on a SiS-chipset laptop and though I can see a physical webcam, neither lsusb or lspci are showing me that any webcam-like device exists. What I want to know is if it would show anything, or if it needs drivers in order to show a device?

lsusb produces no results, and "fdisk -l" yields nothing as well. The drive is not recognised as /dev/sdb1 as it was until yesterday.

Hardware :: Palm Device Listed In /proc/bus/usb/devices - But Not In Lsusb Output

Sep 5, 2009

When I connect my Treo 650 with a USB cable it works sometimes and not others. A little investigation showed
that it always works when I see the Palm device listed in the output of lsusb. While trying to diagnose why it appears sometimes and not others, I discovered that it sometimes appears in /proc/bus/usb/devices and not
in lsusb. I didn't think that was possible!

I've tried running kudzu (the Red Hat hardware discovery tool) and killing and restarting udevd.

Ubuntu :: Setting - Wrong Device Was Chosen In The Sound Preferences

Sep 7, 2010

(prior to this i had 8.10 and sound) added a lot of things through command lines,etc...and accidentally stumbled on the fact that the wrong device was chosen in the sound preferences... can someone explain to me what the settings should be? i have just done a clean install of lucid lynx 32 bit i386, no dual boot, just plain clean and fresh lucid lynx. under the output tab- this is where i have a choice between: Internal Audio (analog stereo duplex) USB Audio i know the usb is my speakers now...but what is that analog thing?

under the hardware tab- the internal audio can be analog stereo duplex or analog stereo output, analog stereo input, off, or analog surround with various levels of output from 4.1 to 7.1 the usb audio has only two choices: analog stereo output or digitla stereo duplex under the input tab- internal audio analog stereo is the only device listed choice of connector: microphone 1, mic 2, line in

at the moment i dont have my headphones plugged in, dont want to complicate things. but i am hoping to get skype working and be able to leave the speakers in and when i plug in headphones they will must the speakers automatically. if it doesnt work like that i wont die...but i would like to no have to disconnect the speakers just to use headphones, which is what people i know say they have to do.

Ubuntu Networking :: LSUSB Command Doesn't Work As Well As Windows Wireless Drivers?

Sep 1, 2011

I can get the command program to work, but not the desktop program to work. Windows Wireless Driver was working, but now every time I try to start it, it won't load, and will just be an empty window. This happened after I tried to installed a driver (which was the wrong one), and I restarted the computer. After this happened, I tried to reinstall the program, but to no avail.

The command program works, but I can't use the command lsusb, because it just pauses and doesn't do anything. Do I have to wait for it to kick in. I'm pretty sure that this is not it, because when I try the lspci, this works fine (but it's not the one I need). Please help, and don't make any stupid replies.

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Booting On Gateway - Windows 7 Cannot Be Chosen At Boot?

May 6, 2011

i've just got my gateway laptop which has a recovery option. Due to my observation, the computer has 3 primary partitions when I firstly got it: 12.7 GB, whose property is system recovery (empty and hidden); 100MB whose properties are ACTIVE, primary partition; partition C whose properties are BOOT, system, primary partition, crash dump and page file. Seems that when the machine starts, it firstly read the 100MB partition and then it is leaded to the partition C, where the windows 7 is installed. I SHRINKED THE PARTITION C AND CREATED 3 LOGICAL DRIVES.

Now I want to install OpenSuSE 11.4 on one of my logical drives. What should I do to keep all things well, which means I will be able to dual-boot and also keep my recovery function well? What's more, what I do not want is that the windows 7 cannot be chosen at boot or neither of them can boot!
