While modifying the definition of my PS1, I saw that "[" and "]" markers should be added to help bash to compute the right display lenght. Many exemples on the web do not use them or even mention them.I searched for a solution to add them automatically, like with sed, but I didn't find any example. Are they still needed and is there a recommandation not to use sed to define PS1?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor. This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

View 12 Replies View Relatedswitching to Fluxbox. I've already discoveded how to configure menus and hotkeys but still not sure about appearance configuration. In the Fluxbox menu I chose nice-looking style and want to customize it - background color, font, font color, size of the panel (I want it widescreen and make it bigger in height), color of this panel, amount of desktops (2 instead of 4), etc... Where do I customize all this?

What command could I use in terminal to delete all ASCII characters? That is, delete a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and all punctuation? I have a file containing Chinese characters, and I want to remove everything else and leave just the Chinese.
I can use grep to leave only the lines that have Chinese in them, but this still leaves a lot of non-Chinese stuff on those lines. Does anyone know how I could actually remove everything that isn't Chinese?
I have my OpenSuse 11.1 box set up with utf-8, however, every time I try to open a file with utf-8 characters with vi it can't handle those characters properly.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 11.04 and the sidebar seems to not be functioning as one would expect.
I removed unwanted applications that come by default and added my own applications by clicking "Keep In Launcher".
After a reboot the sidebar returns to default applications. I did a quick Google search but wasn't able to find anyone else reporting the problem.
Has anyone heard of this happening to anyone else and can you think of anyway to fix it?
How are default applications chosen if you're not running a desktop environment, and how do you change them?
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy soundcard seems to have problems working with a certain game in windows xp so I decided to create a different installation of windows xp to use with onboard sound drivers instead. I had a backup of my clean current install on a dvd, so thought I would use this to speed up the procedure. I have two hard drives - the sata has my normal windows boot on and my ext4 ubuntu installation. The id drive has only files on. So I decided to shrink the partion on the ide drive using gparted and then create a new primary partition. I then installed my backup to this newly created partition.
At first it did not appear in the boot manager. Then I did a sudo update-grub and it now does, however whichever windows installation I now select from the grub, it always seems to boot into the same (old) installation, rather than the new one I installed from a backup. How I can actually get it to boot into this new installation? It might be due to windows boot ini settings or disc / partition flags or whatever, as I tried fiddling with those.
Since this morning, in a normal Gnome session, all of my GTK apps, menus and icons (except, oddly for the Gnome panel) are using the same drab and boring style that they use when they're running as root. Which they're not.No one else uses this computer, and I've made no changes to any GTK-based or affecting settings, except to try to change the GTK controls, with no effect at all. So I cannot understand why this is happening.

It definitely is recognized by SUSE, since i can see it in partitioning section, but after that i just can't find it in yast (mnt, media,...).Is there any other way to mount/recognize the drive, because i just don't have any other idea how to backup that chosen software list?

How do I install the Hotkeys program for F15?
In F14 this was a default app on the Live CD. F15 Live doesn't have this included or is it not available for this OS version?
I accidentally turned off hotkeys (so now print screen button won't work) so I turned the service back on (in "configure desktop") by hitting "start" but the "print screen" button still won't work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUsing KDE 4.6+, I'd like to have a predefined set of hotkeys for all users of the computer. E.g. the "XF86Calculator"-key starting "kcalc" as a default for all users without everyone being forced to deal with the absolutely messy and un-intuitive KDE hotkey configuration. Is there a way to do that? Preferably something like an "*.desktop"-file in /usr/local in order to be consistent with the rest of the system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Gnome on 10.10 and use hotkeys (shortcut keys) for opening just about everything. When I go to System>Administration>Preferences>Keyboard Shortcuts and enter a shortcut to open Nautilus (file manager) it doesn't work.
The shortcut key I have set for this (Mod4-m or Windows key+m) works fine if I replace 'nautilus' with 'thunar' or 'pcmanfm' as the command, but when I use 'nautilus', nothing. The same shortcut key works fine to open Nautilus in Xfce. If I type 'nautilus' in a terminal in Gnome up she pops. I can stick just about any other command in there and WinKey+M will work fine.
My regular setup is with Xfce where everything is dandy but I am fairly curious as to what Gnome has against Nautilus in the shortcut key menu.
I've setup a dualboot-system. SUSE 11.2 starts automatically and works well all the time.
But when I want to use XP (yeah, sometimes I do that...), in about 40% of all cases it won't be loaded when chosen in GRUB. Just a black screen without anything else. Then I need to restart and in the 2nd trial it works!
i've just got my gateway laptop which has a recovery option. Due to my observation, the computer has 3 primary partitions when I firstly got it: 12.7 GB, whose property is system recovery (empty and hidden); 100MB whose properties are ACTIVE, primary partition; partition C whose properties are BOOT, system, primary partition, crash dump and page file. Seems that when the machine starts, it firstly read the 100MB partition and then it is leaded to the partition C, where the windows 7 is installed. I SHRINKED THE PARTITION C AND CREATED 3 LOGICAL DRIVES.
Now I want to install OpenSuSE 11.4 on one of my logical drives. What should I do to keep all things well, which means I will be able to dual-boot and also keep my recovery function well? What's more, what I do not want is that the windows 7 cannot be chosen at boot or neither of them can boot!
I'm struggling a bit to install F11 on my laptop. When I put in the cd, i get to the menu. I elect to boot into the live cd, then my pc reboots and the menu comes up again...
