Software :: Uninstall Drivers And Get It Work Again Without ATI Drivers?
Jan 15, 2010when I boot into Fedora right before the login screen I get a black screen with a command line.How can I uninstall the drivers and get it work again without ATI Drivers? I have switchable graphics and for Fedora have to switch them in the BIOS but with integrated as well as discrete graphics I get the same black screen.I have the LiveDVD ready and only need advice on howto log in in text mode or recover via LiveDVD.

I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

May 27, 2011just installed ubuntu a couple nights ago. Trying to learn the ropes, but I've been stumped by these problems with ATI video card drivers. ubuntu gave me a notification that there were proprietary drivers available, but I was not able to install them. i got some kind of system archive failed error. so i tried downloading the linux drivers from the ATI website but those wouldn't even run. i have a feeling there's something i need to be doing that i am unaware of.also another quick question. while getting utorrent i found that i need to have this application called 'wine' to install it, correct? do i need to do anything special with wine or can i just run the .exe file for utorrent once i have wine?

Aug 18, 2010While trying live usb versions of different gnome and kde distributions, i noticed very unusable performance, however since i read that live media versions of linux did not perform well, i merely assumed that was the reason.
The sad thing is though, i installed ubuntu 10.4 x64 and i am still having the same problems. The only way to get the system slightly usable is to completely disable desktop effects. However, even then, it sort of feels like windows xp before you have installed graphics drivers - like it's not using the hardware at all.
Even the little fish screensaver is basically unrunnable.
My graphics card is an ati radeon x1950 pro AGP version. I read on their site that they only support up to x-org 11.4 and i heard that the linux distributions as of now are beyond that - so i cannot install the official drivers for it (whether they are any good anyway?). I saw in the package manager there are radeonhd drivers also, but i didn't really know what these are and this card is before ati started making their hd series.
So basically, i don't really know what to do or where to turn to in regards to this.
Some other small, unrelated questions are:
How can i increase the amount scrolled with each click of my scroll wheel so it's equivalent to windows? it seems to be one line at the moment, where as in windows i think it is something like 3 - whatever the case, it seems painfully slow.
Also, of my 5 button intellimouse explorer, strangely, the extra forward and back buttons seem to work, but the middle click button doesn't - or at least, holding it in and dragging the mouse to scroll doesn't seem to work - or should it be used for something different in linux?
Ubuntu Networking :: B43 / WL Drivers - Cannot Get Wireless To Work
Dec 23, 2010When using the b43-pci-bridge driver for my broadcom card I can't get the wireless to work while if I use the wl driver it does. This is the only problem that I have that I can't use the wl because it doesn't allow me to change the mode of the card to monitor where as the b43 is compatible with mode change as well as with aircrack.

Ubuntu :: Changed Kernels And Now ATI Drivers Don't Work?

and now trim works, but jockey gave me an error about not being able to find the ATI driver. I downloaded the 11.1 driver(HD 4850 on 64 bit) from AMD and installed it. After reconfiguting xorg and rebooting many times, I cannot get any kind of hardware graphics aceeleration. I can't watch dvd quality video without stuttering, nor can I play any kind of game or glxgears.
Is there something else I need to be doing, or does the kernel/distro combination I have not allow for the proprietary driver? Also, I remember hearing that AMD had good open source drivers, are these the ones that are used by default, or do I need to go elsewhere to install them?

Jun 15, 2010Ever since newer karmic kernels 2.6.31-21 and 2.6.31-22 the Asrock ion built in IR wont work with the drivers Asrock provides even though they have since then provided drivers for 10.04, which still doesnt fix the issues with the remote (just doesnt work)
THE PROBLEM
The solution is of course to downgrade kernel to 2.6.31-20 #58 which remote works fine and newer script version introduces a fix to this. However looking at the available packages seems that most of the kernel 2.6.31-20 is no longer available to re-install.
e.g. linux-headers linux-image-wireless-backports etc etc were able to get a fairly working 2.6.31-20 but most of that kernel version ike I said s no longer available.
So question is. Can anyone shed light where to find the missing 2.6.31-20 #58 stuff so we have access to a full downgrade? Any information taht could help get a full downgrade to 2.6.31-20 #58.
Ubuntu :: NVidia Drivers Cause Gnome-Panel To Not Work
Jul 24, 2010I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed. Everything works fine until I enable the Nvidia drivers. When I enable the drivers and reboot the top and bottom panel stop displaying. If I issue command 'pkill gnome-panel' it all comes up and works correctly.
lspci output shows:

I am at a loss here as I am somewhat new to Ubuntu. Where to start looking for the problem? I've thought about setting up a startup script to run 'pkill gnome-panel' after I login, but that doesn't really fix the core of the problem.

Oct 12, 2010I have a WN121T USB adapter for my wireless, which sporadically worked on 10.04, but after a upgrade to 10.10 I have never been able to get a connection again. I still see the wireless adapter working, and when trying to connect to a WPA2 secured network (only thing available here, I do see about 5 other WPA2 secured networks I don't have access to) using the right password, he tries to connect, with a link quality of about 60/100, but it doesn't connect fully. I ran through all troubleshooters, and the only error i came across was: ndiswrapper (NdisMSetInformationComplete:2524): invalid task
But google doesn't provide a solution for this. Does this have to do with the AP being WPA2 secured or is there something else wrong?
I have also ran some diagnostics for you to see, but switching from ubuntu to windows somehow screwed up all the enters and spaces, and I don't really think they're useful as I have isolated the problem to that one error there.
Works perfectly on Windows 7 though.

Jun 9, 2011After using Arch Linux for a while, I tried Ubuntu 11.04 again. Most of it was a pleasant surprise, except for the nvidia drivers. I currently have the nouveau drivers, but when I activate the nvidia drivers and reboot, it's installed but not in use. I figured I should run nvidia-xconfig (as suggested by nvidia-settings) but that makes my computer boot into a tty. Removing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file makes it boot in nouveau again.
How do I install the Nvidia drivers? Ive tried the drivers from nvidia.com too, with the same results. I really want to be able to play my games, and nouveau just isnt going to cut it.

Mar 22, 2010Short of the story is I have an AMD64bit system for my 'server'. I find that there is lacking package support for ubuntu 64bit. Some apps I want to install work fine on 32bit ubuntu but not in 64bit ubuntu. More importantly the 64bit package for my ati drivers don't work, however they do on a 32bit version of ubuntu.
It would make sense to do a fresh install of ubuntu 32bit to avoid problems like this in the future. However my server has been running for years.. since ubuntu6. And it is highly customized. It would take too long to configure my server from scratch, I really want to avoid that. So I'm wondering, next time I do a dist upgrade.. say from 9.10 to 10.04. Is there a way I could trick the update manager in to upgrading to 32bit packages/kernel etc?

Ubuntu (10.04) can see both hard drives and access data. Id like to mirror (raid 1?) these HDDs. Looking around this forum Ive noticed quite a few people mentioning FakeRAID. Turns out that's not quite the same as software RAID. Given how cheap the 1520 was, I suspect it's FakeRAID rather than Hardware. Perhaps someone can confirm? Given Ubuntu can see both HDDs, would this mean it ll have the correct drivers to work with a hardware/fake raid? A common recommendation is to use mdadm to create a software RAID. How does this work for partitions accessed from multiple Operating Systems including Windows XP?

May 10, 2010There are currently two options for nVidia drivers in Lucid Lynx, 173, and current. With the video card in my laptop, 9650m GT, the 173 drivers work but Docky is painfully, unusably slow. With the "current" drivers, Docky is fine but I get progressively worse and worse static-type lines across my screen and eventually it the machine restarts itself. I've tried installing drivers manually but they won't compile against the kernel.
Before installing Lucid, I had 9.04 Jaunty installed, and Docky (at the time still merged with gnome-do) worked without a hitch. I ran into this error first when I installed 9.10 and decided to go back to 9.04, hoping that it would be fixed. I can't remember which version of the nVidia drivers I was using in Jaunty, but is there any way to go back to those drivers in Lucid?
