I have seen some threads asking the same question but all the threads are old, has there been a break through allowing X5470 to work under Ubuntu linux? i dont want to use windows as it bloats my hard drive with unnecessary software.
View 5 RepliesAfter I solved the issue about printer, now I'm struggling to make the integrated scanner of lexmark S305 work with debian.The device is connected to the network through integrated wifi connection (it is NOT connected with usb to a host, which act as a server), but I don't know how xsane can recognize it.I have just added the ip address in /etc/sane.d/net.conf, but it doesn't work at all. I read some tutorials on how to configure a network scanner, but they are all related to a scanner connected to a computer through usb, and then shared on the network by this computer.The second issue (probably more important) is that xsane probably doesn't recognize even with usb connection the scanner. The latter is not listed in the supported scanner list. Indeed connecting by usb to my laptop, it doesn't work. I haven't found any driver for it, but probably it could work with driver of other scanners.

I am having trouble loading my sound drivers after removing pulseaudio. (Yes, I did try and reinstall pulse, did it again with ALSA, no luck).
It appears that my sound drivers are not loaded, because cat /proc/asound/cards returns 'no soundcards' and aplay -l returns the same... the ouput was quite different before, I am sure I DO have soundcards and they did work before in Fedora 14.
Any Ideas how can I make the sound drivers load again ?
since i upgraded to natty recently the lexmark x2650 stopped printing, the scanning continues to work. I can install the driver which is offered by lexmark, but not print. I am using natty 32bit, and the driver is lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.zip The error output looks like this:

When I try to load up the printer driver downloaded from the Lexmark site I am asked to enter a root administrator password, but when I enter the password I used to setup the OS it will not accept it. I have reviewed the "sudo" terminal password info, but as I am a newbie I was concerned about wrecking the installation.

I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
I absolutely love Lubuntu on VirtualBox. I installed it to my Compaq Mini CQ-10 without issue. However, there are no drivers for the Wireless or the NIC. Ok, so I go to Broadcom and download the drivers. But, when I try to install with the Makefile, Terminal tells me that make is not installed! Now, how do I install my drivers without make?

Trying to learn the ropes, but I've been stumped by these problems with ATI video card drivers. ubuntu gave me a notification that there were proprietary drivers available, but I was not able to install them. i got some kind of system archive failed error. so i tried downloading the linux drivers from the ATI website but those wouldn't even run. i have a feeling there's something i need to be doing that i am unaware of.also another quick question. while getting utorrent i found that i need to have this application called 'wine' to install it, correct? do i need to do anything special with wine or can i just run the .exe file for utorrent once i have wine?

2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?
3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?

I need to make a minor change to one of the drivers in my 2.6.38 (-sid) kernel. However, I am wondering how best to go about it. Many of the guides on the internet presume one will be using a vanilla source tree and plan on manual configuration.

While trying live usb versions of different gnome and kde distributions, i noticed very unusable performance, however since i read that live media versions of linux did not perform well, i merely assumed that was the reason.
The sad thing is though, i installed ubuntu 10.4 x64 and i am still having the same problems. The only way to get the system slightly usable is to completely disable desktop effects. However, even then, it sort of feels like windows xp before you have installed graphics drivers - like it's not using the hardware at all.
Even the little fish screensaver is basically unrunnable.
My graphics card is an ati radeon x1950 pro AGP version. I read on their site that they only support up to x-org 11.4 and i heard that the linux distributions as of now are beyond that - so i cannot install the official drivers for it (whether they are any good anyway?). I saw in the package manager there are radeonhd drivers also, but i didn't really know what these are and this card is before ati started making their hd series.
So basically, i don't really know what to do or where to turn to in regards to this.
Some other small, unrelated questions are:
How can i increase the amount scrolled with each click of my scroll wheel so it's equivalent to windows? it seems to be one line at the moment, where as in windows i think it is something like 3 - whatever the case, it seems painfully slow.
Also, of my 5 button intellimouse explorer, strangely, the extra forward and back buttons seem to work, but the middle click button doesn't - or at least, holding it in and dragging the mouse to scroll doesn't seem to work - or should it be used for something different in linux?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen using the b43-pci-bridge driver for my broadcom card I can't get the wireless to work while if I use the wl driver it does. This is the only problem that I have that I can't use the wl because it doesn't allow me to change the mode of the card to monitor where as the b43 is compatible with mode change as well as with aircrack.

and now trim works, but jockey gave me an error about not being able to find the ATI driver. I downloaded the 11.1 driver(HD 4850 on 64 bit) from AMD and installed it. After reconfiguting xorg and rebooting many times, I cannot get any kind of hardware graphics aceeleration. I can't watch dvd quality video without stuttering, nor can I play any kind of game or glxgears.
Is there something else I need to be doing, or does the kernel/distro combination I have not allow for the proprietary driver? Also, I remember hearing that AMD had good open source drivers, are these the ones that are used by default, or do I need to go elsewhere to install them?
