Ubuntu Networking :: Get Wireless Adaptor To Work?

Aug 6, 2011

I have a older Dell desktop running a older version of Ubuntu 9.04. I recently got a Belkin N300 micro wireless usb adaptor so I could use it to connect to the internet. I have a Verizon MiFi 2200 wireless router that I use for internet access. The desktop won't recognize the new hardware. It came with a driver disc, but it's for windows.

Will this adapter even work with linux?

If so, how do I get it to work?

Ubuntu Networking :: Configure The Netopia TER/GUSB-N Usb Wireless Adapter?

Jan 7, 2011

I have a Netopia USB wireless adapter, model # TER/GUSB-N that I am having trouble configuring it. I was wondering if anyone would mind lending some support? Basically, I am setting up a webcam server in my kid's playroom so that I can monitor them from downstairs in my home office. The 10/100 network card works fine, but I need to install the wireless lan card because the computer will be far away from the router.

I have the i386 Debian 5.0.7 installed on a headless computer, no GNOME just CLI. Here some additional information:

lsusb

Code:
camserver1:~# lsusb
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 148f:9021 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501USB Wireless Adapter
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:09a1 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate MP/S5500
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
code....

I really enjoy linux a lot. I'm learning a lot each day. I prefer doing things in shell, so if possible, please don't ask me to install GNOME. Using CLI helps me understand more about linux and how to manage the system.

How do I install the drivers etc, the device is currently entirely unrecognised by Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu Networking :: B43 / WL Drivers - Cannot Get Wireless To Work

Dec 23, 2010

When using the b43-pci-bridge driver for my broadcom card I can't get the wireless to work while if I use the wl driver it does. This is the only problem that I have that I can't use the wl because it doesn't allow me to change the mode of the card to monitor where as the b43 is compatible with mode change as well as with aircrack.

This is what lspci -nnk shows:
Code:
06:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43XG [14e4:4329] (rev 01)
Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
Kernel modules: ssb
and neither network manager or iwconfig show blank while using the b43 driver but using the wl they do work....

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To To Access Wireless Adaptor

I set up an older computer with Ubuntu 9.10 and tried to get my Linksys AE1000 Wireless N adapter to work. My first mistake was not checking in advance to see if this adapter would work, but I have taken the leap and I am intent on making it work. I ran lsusb and it gives me a device number (13b1:002f) so I know it can be seen and I have also installed indisgtk the GUI for Wirless drivers. I have tried some suggestions from other posts to no avail.

CentOS 5 Networking :: USB Wireless Adaptor Shows As __tmp643337698

Oct 31, 2009

I installed CentOS 5.4 on my desktop yesterday after facing crashes from Ubuntu 9.04 Everything worked fine and few didn't which I could resolve, but this problem is absolutely strange to me. I've USB wireless adaptor Belkin F5D7050 v4000 which uses a zydas zd1211 chipset. The problem is that I've not been able to connect to internet or even in the local network. (I've this another Laptop (Windows Vista) which can connect to internet and thus I can post and download stuff.)

I read the CentOS wiki [URL] to setup the wireless network and it asked me to download a firmware for it.. I downloaded and installed the firmware from the specified location but to no respite and I can't connect to network. now the strange thing is the result of iwconfig which was here even before installing the firmware. iwconfig shows

Ubuntu Networking :: LSUSB Command Doesn't Work As Well As Windows Wireless Drivers?

Sep 1, 2011

I can get the command program to work, but not the desktop program to work. Windows Wireless Driver was working, but now every time I try to start it, it won't load, and will just be an empty window. This happened after I tried to installed a driver (which was the wrong one), and I restarted the computer. After this happened, I tried to reinstall the program, but to no avail.

The command program works, but I can't use the command lsusb, because it just pauses and doesn't do anything. Do I have to wait for it to kick in. I'm pretty sure that this is not it, because when I try the lspci, this works fine (but it's not the one I need). Please help, and don't make any stupid replies.

Ubuntu :: Wireless Does Not Work + Printer Drivers So Buggy + MP3 Players And Digital Cameras Not Work?

Jul 7, 2010

I wanted some input on chronic problems with Ubuntu:

1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?

2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?

3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?

4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?

5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?

I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Wireless Network Adapter To Be Read By 'Windows Wireless Drivers'

Nov 24, 2010

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).

1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

Debian :: Didn't Work With The Default Wireless Drivers

Jul 20, 2010

I have gotten Debian working quite well on my Sony Vaio laptop for the past 6 months or so, and it's a very rewarding experience. I however have a small amount of problems that I could not find the answer to through googling or reading Debian instructions.

1) I have an Atheros-based wireless chipset in my laptop that didn't work with the default wireless drivers in Debian. So I replaced them with madwifi drivers and it works great now. However, every time I restart the computer, it defaults back to 1mb/s wireless speed; making me go into root terminal and change the speed with "iwconfig ath0 rate 54M". Obviously this gets a little bit annoying to enter every time, so I am looking for a way to make it automatic. I have looked on Google and gotten some hits but none of them have been successful.

2) Whenever I put the computer on stand-by then return, the wifi refuses to connect. Networkmanager tries to connect then crashes. I have found no hits on this issue with my configuration. Very odd.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RT2870 Can't Get Compiled Drivers To Work

Jan 7, 2010

I have been searching through the forums and looked at this SDB:ASUS WL-160N USB Wireless Adapter - openSUSE and I am still having problems getting my ralink rt2870 wireless adapter working.

I compiled the driver from source and when I tried to use insmod it said rt2870sta.ko already exists. So I thought it should be working. I did an lsmod to see if it had started up and rt2870sta showed up as having been loaded, however so did rt2800usb rt2x00usb and rt2x00lib. I have tried starting up the computer with these blacklisted but that didn't help anything. As of now the rt2800usb seems to be controlling my wireless card. Using iwconfig the chip shows up as wlan0 instead of ra0 but iwlist scan appears to be working although my network isn't showing up. I have copied RT28670STA.dat to /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat and configured it as well. Running lsusb the chip shows up as simply Linksys (it is a linksys adapter with ralink chipset).

Ubuntu Networking :: USB Wi-Fi Adaptor For MAC Address Change

Jun 10, 2010

My laptop has an internal Broadcom wireless adaptor. It works fine for basic Internet access, but I cannot change the MAC address with ifconfig. I would like to be able to change my MAC address. Since this is a laptop, the only option for me to do this is a USB wireless adaptor. But compatibility is very hit-or-miss. I've already tried two USB adaptors that had been stated to be compatible with Linux, and while both worked for basic functionality, neither allowed me to change the MAC address.

For whatever reason, this information seems very, very difficult to find. I have spent upwards of ten hours cumulatively searching forums (including this one) and other resources, and have found only vague, outdated, or outright false information regarding USB adaptors that support this. I believe I will be doing a great service to other users like myself by getting this question directly and conclusively answered for once, and the more responses, the better.

Questions:
Do you have (or know of) a USB wireless adaptor that actually allows you to change the MAC address?

If so, what is the specific brand and model number, and what steps were necessary to install the drivers?
