View 17 Replies View RelatedI had an ATT "2Wire" modem/router that was working but connection to the Internet was often poor. An ATT technician came to my home and swapped out the modem/router for the identical model. I changed the ESSID and WEP code to match the new unit and everything was fine with the following wireless units: a wireless desktop, two cellphones, three wireless Archos tablets, and a couple of e-reader tablets. So all seemed to be fine wirelessly. However...
My laptop (SuSE 11.0, KDE3) simply won't connect no matter what I do. I changed the ESSID and WEP info in the lappy exactly as was done with the other wireless devices named above. But no good. The lappy does see the modem/router (a good, strong signal appears in KNetworkManager). But it seems as if the modem/router is rejecting the lappy's attempted handshake using the new ESSID and/or WEP information.
I thought that perhaps there was something wrong with the lappy's wireless card, so I took it to a Starbucks to see if it would connect there on an open network, and it did without problem. So the lappy's wireless card appears to be working fine. It just won't talk to the encrypted modem/router at home. Here are the settings on the lappy. Hopefully something here is easily identified as the culprit. With all the clicking I've done it certainly is possible that I ticked something that should not have been ticked and just don't realize what I've done.
Network settings screen:
Global options tab:
Network setup method: user controlled with Network Manager
Change default route via DHCP (ticked)

Why won't the new modem/router which is exactly the same as the old one except for the ESSID and WEP work with my lappy yet it does work with a bunch of other wireless devices?
What are the pros and cons of various current model ADSL modem routers for use with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato? There are, of course, hardware compatibility lists (HCLs) for each of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato) but many of the models are no longer available and there are so many that researching them all would be onerous. Many pages on the Internet recommend the WRTG54L and that would be great but it is no longer an option except second user which is increasingly difficult. What are the pros and cons of the various chipsets: ADM5120, AR7, IXP4xx and BCM63xx?

Note that I replaced the stock network manager with Wicd, as I find it more reliable in picking up wifi connections. I'm not sure if it's suitable for connecting the HSPA modem though.
I've bought the new AT&T's Velocity/GI461 USB modem. This is a nice toy because into one only stick there are integrated all the features that I need, like the GSM/3G/GPS modules. Googling I've found a good tutorial about how to connect it under Debian and about how to control the GPS data. You can read it going here :

but what about to make and receive phone calls through the SIM card integrated and the AT commands ? Can someone give some help ? I've attached some documentation. Maybe this can be done using Wammu and/or Gnokii.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI wish to install a new libc.so and have compiled the latest glibc (2.9.90) with the latest gcc (4.3.3) and the latest binutils (2.19, compiled with gcc 4.3.3). Compilation succeeded without errors, although not before I did some non- obvious things (e.g., I had to put '-march=i686' into my CFLAGS to avoid getting undefined symbol errors from the linker). 'Make check' also produced errors, a number of which I averted by doing non-obvious things (e.g., I had to copy iconvdata/gconv-modules and libio/tst-*.input from the source
directory to the build directory, and I had to export into the environment TIMEOUTFACTOR=2; the glibc documentation gave me no clue that I had to do any of those things). Now I am running into an error with rt/tst-cputimer that I do not know how to avert. I have run 'make check' 3 times; here are the 3 results. From rt/tst-cputimer1.out:
And from rt/tst-cputimer2.out:
Before running the 3rd 'make check', I increased TIMEOUTFACTOR
(to 3). It made no difference. From rt/tst-cputimer3.out:
I don't want to install the new libc.so until I can get all the tests to succeed, or, failing that, until I understand the significance of the error, and can intelligently dismiss it.

I have a Centos 5.4 server running kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5PAE. It has an internal modem, and I need to be able to issue AT commands from a script to the modem. I need to simply dial a number and hang up. The relevant piece of my script is:
[Code]...
With an external modem, this works no problem. With an INTERNAL modem, the call never goes out. I fired up minicom to make sure the modem was working correctly, and if I issue those AT commands from within minicom, everything works great.
While minicom was running, I noticed a peculiar fact: WHILE minicom is running, the script works from the command line, and I can see all the AT commands and OK's in minicom, (minicom acts as a monitor). When I exit minicom, the script stops working. It appears minicom is creating a bridge between the com port and the modem itself. So, what is minicom doing that I'm unaware of?
The server's sole function is to run asterisk as a voicemail server (avaya wanted well into 6 figure territory to implement this....). This script is to dial an avaya FAC to turn the voicemail message lights on and off on the end users' phones.
So my 8 year old HP has finally bit the dust. Any opinions on a new HP model?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI don't care for domain 'authentication' by an "Authority". I don't trust no one, so CA's to me are as trustworthy as the gypsy in the park.
I can use a self-signed certificate, but the problem is most browsers makers are Fn idiots that say the connection is not secure, when it actually is, but because I did not folk out cash, it makes my website look bad. I can understand the need for a 3rd party to verify the domain host to prevent man in the middle attacks, but I do not care for this.. and browser makers should take more responsibility and introduce different padlocks for types of authentication, rather than saying "this connection is encrypted, but not secure because its self-signed". What a load of horse s***!
How many times does people stop to read certificate authoraties? I sure don't. I only care weather or not the connection has been encrypted.. so, I am looking for a way for simply providing encryption for my website.
From what I understand, when you submit a CSR to a CA, it includes the private key, meaning that the CA would be able to see the encrypt data, should they get hold of it. This is not acceptable for me.
Is there anything other way to use encryption other than the SSL model that is used typically amongst HTTPS browsers today?
Currently I have a 500gb drive with Ubuntu on half of it. The other half is a soon to be Win7 install. I just picked up an identical drive for real cheap last week and I am interested in advice for going about setting up a RAID 1 for redundancy. My first road block is do I want software or hardware RAID? Is this even possible with a dualboot system? If hardware RAID is the way to go does anyone have a particular brand or model they could recommend?
