Ubuntu :: Particular Brand Or Model Can't Recommend?
Sep 20, 2010
Currently I have a 500gb drive with Ubuntu on half of it. The other half is a soon to be Win7 install. I just picked up an identical drive for real cheap last week and I am interested in advice for going about setting up a RAID 1 for redundancy. My first road block is do I want software or hardware RAID? Is this even possible with a dualboot system? If hardware RAID is the way to go does anyone have a particular brand or model they could recommend?

I currently have a Raid0 setup with two disks and I have no problems whatsover. I currently bought 3 brand new 1B drives and I set up Raid5. I created the array and everything works fine. I formatted the array and mounted it. When I tried to copy 750gb of data over my new array, it copies fine at some point and it fails. After reboot, I am seeing the array inactive. I tried everything and could not get the raid back active status. I have removed the array and recreated again, formatted again. When I started copying my files over, exactly same thing happened.

I did it the wubi.exe way this time and I installed ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on my brand new HP dual-core 64-bit with win7. I was super happy to see it install too, because I've definitely missed using ubuntu in the past few days while setting this computer up.
However upon reboot, I see the usual "choice" menu. I choose ubuntu... it then goes directly to grub menu. I click the generic (I also tried safemode too) and I then only get full screen of code with a blinking curser at the bottom. Nothing else happens so I eventually have tp hard shut down. I sure wish I could screenshot all of that code... it's way to much to type out though, sorry.
I already tried the i915.modeset=1 and the i915.modeset=0 after quiet splash tricks, because yes, I do have an Intel. It's a brand new computer though, I thought only older intel cards had thar problem?
I also tried a fresh install of 9.10, even 9.04 (with live cd's that I know work)... same thing. A screen full of code after clicking "Try without...."

I just recently purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad e520 and I'm wanting to put Ubuntu 11.04 on it. I downloaded the 64bit iso and burned it to a thumb-drive, just before booting the thumb-drive. I have not yet installed Ubuntu, but rather I'm still running it from a thumb-drive. I want to make sure everything will work fine, before installing it permanently.
However, it doesn't appear as if any drivers for my wireless card were loaded, as I can't view the available wireless networks. I successfully installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop several months ago and I haven't booted into Windows since, -not one time. Therefore, I'm hoping to have my new laptop run Ubuntu as well.

but no matter what I use as username/password, I am unable to get in.

I have a dual boot-up desktop system with Window XP and Fedora. Linux was installed after Windows came installed with the system. The system has only one hard drive and both the OS are on the same drive but on different paritions. Is it possible to copy the whole Fedora Linux parition to a new hard drive and then install the new hard drive on an entirely desktop to make it work like the old system? Will all the setting in Fedora remain the same? All the file and enviornment variables or the changes made will be retained on a new system? What to do? Which software to use?

I can use Ubuntu with my onboard wireless in my IBM Lenovo Laptop but it doesn't work here and in other linux distro's I have tried I need to do a lot of code manipulation with the help of experts on the forums telling me what to do. I want to install Fedora 14 and maybe even try other Distro's as they come out without needing to be a Linux expert. So I want to go down to Best Buy a couple miles down the road and buy a USB WIFI Wireless thing.

I consider setting up a new system with one of the upcoming new Radeon graphics cards. I would like to know whether this is possible or whether there is a problem I overlooked.
I thought of setting up the system with vesa mode and afterwords downloading/installing the latest radeon or fglrx driver as soon as they are available.would that work? how long does it typically take until these drivers are available?

Not sure if this is correct place to ask this but here go:I have the following setup today:
sda openSUSE 11.2
sdb openSUSE 11.4 ms3
sdc openSUSE 11.3 (production)
sdb is my test environment. sda is still around since its the only way I can power down my system. 11.3 and 11.4 hang on power down. (Another subject) I have the 11.4 ms4 dvd made and I want to install to sdb without carrying over any of the settings. In the past I've just formatted and installed but the settings for the user and root were saved. Want to do a total fresh install. Reason for not carrying over setting is problems with Akonadi not starting (tried all the trouble shooting tips), and Vbox freezing keyboard and mouse when installing XP.

Like it says in the title, I am thinking it should be this hard to install the RAID1 array in my brand new PC. Here is what is happening. I have two brand new 1TB drives that I am attempting a new, fresh install of 10.10 on (in fact, the entire box is new). I am attempting to use the alternate desktop install so that I can have access to the manual partitioning (which is required to setup RAID 1, correct?).
I tried to use the guide here: [URL]... I followed the steps, but when I got the the very end (after selecting and creating the MDs) I get an error message stating that there is no root file system defined. I went back and checked all the steps and I am sure I followed everything in the guide.
Here are some quirks (not sure if they are bugs or not) In step 5 of the disc partitioning, it says to select the bootable flag and set it to yes (I am assuming). I press enter over that options, the screen flashes really quickly to a progress bar, but then comes back to the options screen and it still says bootable flag is off. No matter how many times I do it is says "off".
Also, and here is the bigger problem I think. - So the guide says to select the free space in each drive and then select Automatically Partition the free space, which I do, and it comes back and looks formatted accordingly - has 975.6 GB ext4 / and 24.6 GB swap swap. No Problem there.
BUT - whenever I do the same thing to the second drive, the partitions on the first seem to disappear. Meaning, it doesn't say free space, and has two partitions listed, but the / and the swap (last items in each row) have moved to the second drive partitions. I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to be since the pictures in the linked guide to not show what it looks like after that. THis is driving me crazy and I have to have it set up in RAID 1 and unsure as to what it is I am missing.

Why RHEL5.3?
Sponsor requirement
Why not contact Redhat?
Perhaps I will but I do not think they will support this package since they do not distribute it.When trying to install iwlwifi-1.2.25: this is what I get when running make.
Code:

I'm planning my next desktop build (currently only have a laptop that is falling apart), and one of the features I'm really looking forward to is multiple monitors. I'm thinking a 1920x1200 center monitor and two 1600x1200 on either side, but I'm not decided just yet. I don't know if I really need that resolution.
I have a few specific questions though. The only time I've ever messed with multiple monitors is way back when I had Windows, so I'm not sure what to expect on Ubuntu.
1: What is the best Graphics card brand/series to use? I've seen that ATI has more powerful hardware than nVidia for the same price range, but nVidia seems to support Linux better. I'm using an ATI card in my laptop now and have never had any problems with it (with either open source or proprietary drives, other than open source drivers didn't do well with 3d). I would also like these GPUs to be running F@H while I'm away, so GFLOPS is just important as gaming performance.
2: Since I want to use 3 monitors, I assume I should get 3 of the same graphics card or a card with 3 identical outputs (do those exist?).
Or can this be done some other way. For example, a more powerful card for the center monitor, and less powerful cards for the other two. Do those need to be the same brand, or could I use, for example, ATI and nVidia cards on the same desktop simultaneously?
3: Is it possible to have a virtual console on one monitor with a desktop on the other two, or do I need to set up a terminal on the desktop to use that monitor?
4: How can I run fullscreen SDL games with multiple monitors? Will it only show on one screen or stretch across them all? Is it possible to have a fullscreen game running on one monitor with the desktop visible on the others? How would the mouse focus work with that? Or does it just all depend on how I setup the monitors?

I am a Linux newbie and did one successful install Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit on my old desktop. Encouraged by that success (and the ease of it), this week I built my own system, which will be my primary system. I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 (AMD 64 version) and after the partition selection screen (I chose to partition the entire disk), I immediately get a white blank screen. Then nothing happens. I also tried with Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit, XUbuntu 9.1 64, Ubuntu 9.04 all had the same results.
Not sure if the hardware specs are required, but here they are:
1) Motherboard: MSI KA 780 G
2) Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 630
3) Memory: Corsair 2 x 2 GB, 800 MHz twinx 6400 c6
4) Harddrive: Hitachi sata 300, 1 TB
In desperation, I have started windows XP installation and that seems to progress fine at its leisurely pace. Its formatting the drive right now. During one of the attempts, it did install something*, since after that I see a new ubuntu partition after that. But when I boot from hard disk I get a black screen with cursor. I tried to search thru the forums and nobody seemed to have this exact problem, one guy got a white screen with cursor after a graphics card install, which is not the same. I dont want to go back to windows.

I just got my brand new shiny Dell XPS L502X laptop today and planned to do a dual-boot installation between Win 7 and F15. Win 7 went great but I can't even get the 64-bit Live DVD of F15 to load. The splash screen always hangs while the bar loads, but if I push ESC so I can see what's going on in the background, I get a whole lot of different error messages and the last message is "fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed." What I get is nearly identical to what I found in this post. I've already tried the usual kernel options that have always worked for me in the past, such as noapic, noacpi, and nomodeset. However, the Live DVD still won't boot. There's got to be a way to install this. Any ideas?

I have replaced my old mobo and CPU on a working 11.4 installation and was expecting some issues but not this.Contrary to expectations, the existing install booted fine first time but then would not reboot with the above grub error. As I understand it, this error usually occurs with old BIOS and new large hard disks which the BIOS can't cope with.OK, so I eventually decided that it would be a good idea anyway to reinstall openSUSE (/home is on a separate partition). During installation, I noticed a warning that Grub error 18 might prevent booting because the bootloader was on a partition larger than 128Gb. I proceeded anyway and the beast booted, but then refused to reboot today with that error.
Now I understand that a possible workaround is to install in a special, smallish boot partition but I'm reluctant to reinstall again, and don't understand why this should be necessary with a modern (Intel H67) motherboard.Other info that might be relevant: no dual boot involved, three SATA HDs with grub installed in MBR of first one (sda) and openSUSE installed to sdb1. Also, it cold booted fine this morning and the error only occurred after I edited the bootloader in YAST to change the VGA mode (it had complained about it during the cold boot).
