OpenSUSE Wireless :: Exchanged Modem/router For Same Model But Now Cannot Connect To Internet Using WEP

Dec 1, 2010

I had an ATT "2Wire" modem/router that was working but connection to the Internet was often poor. An ATT technician came to my home and swapped out the modem/router for the identical model. I changed the ESSID and WEP code to match the new unit and everything was fine with the following wireless units: a wireless desktop, two cellphones, three wireless Archos tablets, and a couple of e-reader tablets. So all seemed to be fine wirelessly. However...

My laptop (SuSE 11.0, KDE3) simply won't connect no matter what I do. I changed the ESSID and WEP info in the lappy exactly as was done with the other wireless devices named above. But no good. The lappy does see the modem/router (a good, strong signal appears in KNetworkManager). But it seems as if the modem/router is rejecting the lappy's attempted handshake using the new ESSID and/or WEP information.

I thought that perhaps there was something wrong with the lappy's wireless card, so I took it to a Starbucks to see if it would connect there on an open network, and it did without problem. So the lappy's wireless card appears to be working fine. It just won't talk to the encrypted modem/router at home. Here are the settings on the lappy. Hopefully something here is easily identified as the culprit. With all the clicking I've done it certainly is possible that I ticked something that should not have been ticked and just don't realize what I've done.

Network settings screen:
Global options tab:
Network setup method: user controlled with Network Manager
Change default route via DHCP (ticked)

[code]....

Why won't the new modem/router which is exactly the same as the old one except for the ESSID and WEP work with my lappy yet it does work with a bunch of other wireless devices?

Networking :: Which Current Model ADSL Modem Router For DD-WRT - OpenWRT Or Tomato?

Mar 25, 2010

What are the pros and cons of various current model ADSL modem routers for use with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato? There are, of course, hardware compatibility lists (HCLs) for each of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato) but many of the models are no longer available and there are so many that researching them all would be onerous. Many pages on the Internet recommend the WRTG54L and that would be great but it is no longer an option except second user which is increasingly difficult. What are the pros and cons of the various chipsets: ADM5120, AR7, IXP4xx and BCM63xx?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: SuperMicro / CentOS Compatibility - Specific Model 1026TT-TF

Sep 4, 2010

I am looking into 1026TT-TF and 6016TT-TF for a CentOS 5.4 or 5.5 64bit installation:

SuperMicro 6016TT-TF
SuperMicro 1026TT-TF

It will be used as a Web-server mostly. Since they are twin nodes, one node will be one strong firewall. I have been checking all over and I can't find any driver, bios, or issues with this specific motherboard from Supermicro and Intel 5500/5600 series CPUs. Is there anything that would concern you with these servers?

I am also looking to put in a 4-port Gigabit LAN card into one node which I doubt makes any difference in the whole equation. Further more, and most importantly, the first one takes only 2.5" HDDs and the second option accepts 3.5" HDDs. Other than size availability and price, are there any concerns regarding performance when chosing one over the other? System which accepts 3.5" HDDs only takes two per node so I have to opt for 1TB drives. For the 2.5" system I can go with 4 of 2.5" HDDs of 500GB in size. Either of options selected will be setup in RAID-1.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Install Wireless Card (D-Link) & Yum Doesn't Run

Mar 6, 2011

what I need is : 1/ make run the wifi USB card D-Link DWA-110

2/ I saw I had problems with yum: when I launch the "add/remove programs" button in the menu, if the "c5-media" item is checked (and only this one) and the DVD of centOS is in the drive, then I have this message : "cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: c5-media. Please verify its path and try again" I specify I modified the /var/run/yum.pid file (removed the only number which was here)

the main issue for me is the yum failure, because it could be needed for the wifi problem. one thing after the other! the installation is totally new (except that I modified the yum.pid file).

Ubuntu Networking :: ZModem Link Over Null Modem Cable ?

Mar 28, 2011

I am writing a simple script which will transmit files over a serial connection. I have simplified the setup to test the solution, so the final configuration will be a bit more complicated.

Current setup:
1. 2 RS232 com ports connected with a null modem in between.
2. Open minicom on both
3. Put in 19200,8,N,1 as parameters
4. Open text travels both ways
5. Files sent over Zmodem transfer well.

Both serial adapters are USB, but I tried it also with real com ports, and same story. For simplicity, I will call one adapter "receiving" and the other "sending" to signify from which side I want to send the files through zmodem.

Then I close minicom on the "sending" site without reseting the port (I have also tried setting everything up with stty)

On sending site:

Code:

I tried googling but no solution helps. Please do not try to suggest to use minicom on both sides, because this is going to be an unattended process in the end.

How to transfer a file with zmodem using rz and sz without minicom.

CentOS 5 :: Modem AT Commands To Internal Modem?

May 20, 2010

I have a Centos 5.4 server running kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5PAE. It has an internal modem, and I need to be able to issue AT commands from a script to the modem. I need to simply dial a number and hang up. The relevant piece of my script is:

[Code]...

With an external modem, this works no problem. With an INTERNAL modem, the call never goes out. I fired up minicom to make sure the modem was working correctly, and if I issue those AT commands from within minicom, everything works great.

While minicom was running, I noticed a peculiar fact: WHILE minicom is running, the script works from the command line, and I can see all the AT commands and OK's in minicom, (minicom acts as a monitor). When I exit minicom, the script stops working. It appears minicom is creating a bridge between the com port and the modem itself. So, what is minicom doing that I'm unaware of?

The server's sole function is to run asterisk as a voicemail server (avaya wanted well into 6 figure territory to implement this....). This script is to dial an avaya FAC to turn the voicemail message lights on and off on the end users' phones.

Ubuntu :: Install Over To Another Shuttle XPC SG31G2 V1 Model Which Was Running Windows 7

Apr 3, 2010

I had a shuttle box quad core amd running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit. Anyway it was always losing it's bios settings so I presumed the battery was flat. Since the shuttle had always been a little twitchy apic had to be disabled etc to get thing to boot into Linux. I decided to move the install over to another Shuttle XPC SG31G2 V1 model which was running Windows 7 without any problems.

Got it running surprisingly easy as I expected a full re-install jobby but I quickly reconfigured it and it was loading into X properly. However the bios settings also get reset on power off. All seems very strange to me. Any ideas bar booting of a live cd and see if the same happens???

CentOS 5 Hardware :: D-Link DWA-140 On C5 Disappearing / Fix It?

Jun 26, 2010

I recently bought a D-Link DWA-140 USB wifi adapter for use with my CentOS 2.6.18-194.el5 hoping that it would work seamlessly due to its popularity but having issues with it.

The USB adapter is detected in the System > Administration > Hardware.

It also appears in lsusb:

but when I went into System > Administration > Network it does not appear in the Hardware tab.

After some searching I found out that I need to install some packages which I did.

Namely, rt2870-firmware rpm and kmod-rt2870sta

Then I turned NetworkManager on as a service and through the docked applet on the top menu bar I was able to connect to my wifi net.

However when I rebooted the connection wasn't re-established and when I click on the NetworkManager applet icon it tells me "No network devices available"

Where did my USB adapter and joy go? :(

I can't for the life of me get the adapter to re-surface even if I go to System > Administration > Network and try create a new interface.
No devices appear there in the Devices tab and nothing in the Hardware tab.

I really do not want to try and add a custom kernel to my instalation but I am wondering how I can get this to work on centOS 5.2.

I know first step is to get the adapter to be recognized by the system kernel. I think I can configure the network after that.
