I have created a live fedora11 usb using live usb creator, but when I restart the computer the bios does not recognize the live usb and system stop (not shut down) when I choose boot from usb drive option.

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

I am using DELL pc's, and remember installing Linux as being a few almost basic steps on my self assembled clone pc's in my youth. Now, over ten years later I want to redo that and return to my old playground. I am using after over 12 years administering MS stuff again applications running on unix (solaris) at my work. Its like homecoming but in a difficult way, I am brainwashed and not really into unix anymore. So... lets install linux again at home. Returning to my favorite Suse distribution in the old days (who knows why).
I went through the installation (Opensuse11) simple, standard to start with, so mainly next (ACPI disabled). Rebooted... and the pc finds no recognized bootable HDD. OK, well, try again, other HDD to be sure, results in the same. Set manually the root partition as active. No go, I feel as a newbie again. What happened to me in those last years? Tried to do it also with a fedora distri - same outcome. When plugging these HDD in another recent (DELL) pc, it also does not recognize the HDD as bootable. Both disks have been part of a system before and functioned; until I changed this system for this other purpose. Probably i am missing something basic??
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my WinXP desktop computer. I used the LiveCD and manually configured the partitions. I resized my XP partition (the entire SATA HDD) and created a 37GB partition for Ubuntu, as well as a 3GB swap file. I installed the boot loader on the Ubuntu partition. But BIOS doesn't recognize that the drive has separate partitions, and I can't boot into it from Windows either. I know I didn't modify WinXP's MBR, but should I have? I didn't know where it was.
I booted into the LiveCD again, and went into the disk manager. I Edited the Ubuntu partition and saw a checkbox that said "Bootable". I checked it and hit apply, hoping that might do it. I waited twenty minutes and the little circle was still spinning with no indication that it was actually doing anything or any warning of how long it would take, so I rebooted. Still no luck.
Someone told me that Ubuntu sometimes won't be bootable if you have both SATA and PATA drives in the system, which I do (although both XP and Ubuntu are on the same, SATA drive) and gave me a page that told me to use Grub4Dos. I fiddled around with that, only to come onto the Ubuntu website and find out that the page they gave me was outdated, before Ubuntu used GRUB2.
My CD-DVD drive have suddenly stop working in my laptop and when I've checked the BIOS setup I've seen that the drive is no longer recognized by BIOS (there is no option for this drive so I can't enable it). I don't know what CD-DVD drive I have (since I can gather information about it because it's not recognized by my laptop) but I think it's a Matshita CD-DVD driver. I use Ubuntu 10.04. Do you know how to make it work again?

I tried an hard reboot but my bios does not detect my USB Disk either.So i boot from a liveDVD to check what is the problem?

Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...
Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?
I have a recent ACER laptop that I used to use with Ubuntu only, but Ubuntu has crashed and won't boot anymore. I tried booting it via the live CD to try and recover my files before re-installing everything, but the CD won't run automatically.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIf an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?
I would like to be able to change my BIOS setting to enable me to access a live cd or dvd to try some Linux Distros. At the moment ,when I access the BIOs ,it willl not stay as adjusted ,it ignores the settings ,it goes to default.

I have been given a live disk of the latest edition of ubuntu (10.4?) by someone at work, but my CD drive on my laptop seems to think the disk is blank. I know this is not the case as when the disk is inserted into a different laptop is it recognised as an ubuntu installation disk.
My aim to boot ubuntu from the disk to get a feel for what it's like before installing it fully on my laptop, and also to check that it would work on said laptop.
On trying to install Ubuntu 10.10, one PC was fine. I attempted to install it on a Lenovo Q150 using the Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not recognize a network connection. When the same PC is running Windows 7, the network connection is fine (it recognizes my NAS drive also).Has anyone else had this problem/found a solution? I'm sure that someone else has posted this, but a couple of hours' searching revealed nothing.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had FC11 x86_64 running for awhile based on an upgrade from FC10. I powered down one night then when I tried to boot the next day the system just sat at the BIOS prompt "Verifying DMI pool data...". I opened the case to check all cables - all fine. I've run a memtest, also fine. I then suspected a bad HDD so I ran the Seagate tools from the Ultimate Boot CD (fast test) and both HDDs came up fine. BIOS can see both disks fine, too. I stuffed around with fixmbr and fixboot and got one step further, with it sitting at "invalid operating system" or something like that. I was able to use Linux rescue mode to mount the old filesystems fine.
Today I've completely blown away all my old partitions and started from scratch. After successfully completing an install with custom disk layout (identical to old layout) it still just sits at "Verifying DMI pool data..". Do I have a bad sector in my boot block? Possible BIOS issue? Is there some tool to re-write the boot block?
I'm successfully dual booting and running Windows XP and Fedora 11 (with EVERY recent update installed), everything works fine EXCEPT that I cannot get both System times to synchronize.. Evey time I run Fedora I find the system time is always an hour different to Windows. Evert time I correct the system time in Fedora it affects my BIOS time settings. If I then go into Windows I first have to go into the BIOS and correct the BIOS time setting by one hour before I get the correct time in Windows........ Nothing is wrong with my Windows side of things, I know this because if I don't log into Fedora then my system times stay correct, only when I correct the settings in Fedora (which are always an hour out) do I get my BIOS changed. Also in Fedora, although I live in the UK (London) Fedora ALWAYS DEFAULTS TO Guernsey, no matter how many times I correct this to LONDON, Fedora always defaults back to Guernsey.... Has anyone else experienced this as I'm sure it's a Bug in Fedora, surely it shouldn't alter my BIOS settings, should it ??
View 9 Replies View RelatedWell, after installing the 64-bit RTM release of Windows 7, I finally became too fed up to stand it anymore. My BIOS does not recognize more than 3 GBs of RAM and therefore even my 64-bit Operating Systems (Windows 7 and Fedora 11) can't see or use the extra gig. Is there any way to get another BIOS or to add the support to my existing BIOS?
Oh, before I forget, I am using an Acer Aspire 5630 incase the model is required.
I'm completely new to Fedora, though not to Linux (I'm switching from Ubuntu 9.10, now) and am having a few problems getting it installed. I followed the installation instructions, torrented the i386 DVD image, and put it on a 4gb USB drive using UNetbootin.
This is where my problems started. I restarted the computer, figured out which F key I needed to press to select the boot source, and then there wasn't a USB boot option. I've looked all over the place (using Google) and can't find out how to get the BIOS to have a USB option there-- I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A10, and that doesn't come with the USB boot option.
Now I'm trying to either figure out how to add the USB boot option or find another way to install. Burning a DVD (or CDs) doesn't work, as I don't have the resources to do so. I've seen somewhere that there's a way to install from a hard drive partition, but no instructions on how to do so (if someone could point me to a way to do that, it seems to be my best option right now-- if it even exists).
When I moved from Fedora 13 from Fedora 11, I thought the annoying application crashes that I had been having were gone for good. Random crashes - firefox, Thunderbird, Abrt, metacity and what have you with SIGSEGV errors. I'm beginning to believe that these are not down to Fedora or even the RAM (Have run Memtest, several times). I'm not sure if what I am seeing are signs of IRQ conflicts of some sort. Can someone, please have a look and give me some guidance on what to do? Should I reinstall with acpi=off ? noapic? Also, don't have a clue why the system complains of ECC being disabled? The RAM is non-ECC. I have posted some sections of the logs here with links to the full logs instead of making this a massive post.

I have a Dell workstation that I picked up for free. Most everything thing works, but it will not boot to the HDD (SATA). BIOS does not recognize the drive. I can, however, boot to a live Fedora 12 disk, and from the desktop I can see and write to the HDD. I would like to be able to boot from the disk and upgrade to 14 or whatever.

I launched an installation cd with some older version of Fedora,dered it to remove everything (but I didn't accept changes, that's important!), but in the meantime I changed my mind and I wanted to wipe the disk the other way. There was no 'quit' button anywhere,just.. powered off the computer. Dumb, I know.Right now it doesn't work at all. At first, I thought I destroyed the partition array, but I looked into the bios and it says that no HDD drive is installed. And I have no idea what to do now. I tried to find a solution via Google, but all I found were problems related to newly bought hard drives. Nothing about a blonde powering off the computer during the installation process though .

View 7 Replies View RelatedAs I understand, Fedora 12 sets up Intel ICH (when set in BIOS) as mdraid instead of dmraid.I would like to setup my 2 SATA hard drives so ultimately my /boot partition is RAID1, my / (ROOT) partition is RAID 1, and my swap is either RAID0, or fstab referencing 2 partitions on 2 of the drives, both set with pri=0 (which supposedly is equivalent to striping of RAID0, performance wise).
Assuming Fedora 12 uses mdraid for my configuration in either instance, am I better of enabling, or disabling the RAID mode in the BIOS? This system is strictly Fedora--no dual booting, no Windows. Any performance gains; reliability benefits between either scenario?It's a Intel P35 motherboard with ICH9R. Storage configuration is either "AHCI" or "RAID"
I ran into some strange issues with dropping drives with the RAID set on in BIOS. When it was set, that gave me two md devices of md126 (RAID0, swap) and 127 (RAID1 split between / and /boot). I think I had md126p1 for the SWAP, and md127p1 for /boot and md127p2 for / Within purely software, i have:
/dev/sda1 RAID
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 RAID

I suppose unless the BIOS enabled RAID is supposed to be faster, I'll stick with a purely software route and keep the BIOS set to AHCI.
I am having this message during starting my Fedora 10: Code:PCI: BIOS BUG #0[00000031] foundI have searched for this error but only found information like: "this does not matter" or "hard disk plugged into an external sata connector on the main board" - I have not done the latter. Because I am also having some trouble with my tv-card (module tda9887 is not loaded during the first start, only after a reboot) I would be happy to solve this error (or to know where it is coming from)

I have Intel development board where I boot Fedora. If I use AMI bios then Fedora boot without video, I however can communicate to kernel via serial console. I suspect that this problem with video related to Legacy Bios Rom option. I however don't understand why it influences Linux, because it has good video driver. It was checked with another bootloader. what role is played by Legacy Bios Rom option.

It stops at the message "net: Registered protocol family 2" but in one of my desperate attempts I changed almost every setting in my BIOS (updated to 1.07) and all of a sudden it passed on. Stupid enough I figured it would be a small effort to find the setting and figure out the problem, so I changed them one at a time after loading the defaults....
I have a working F-10 box with an older motherboard (pre-sata). The p-ata ports are full (4 drives), so I'm trying to add a sata controller and another drive. The sata controller plugs into the pci bus, but is not detected by the bios (very old). After booting, the OS loads the driver module(s) and detects the new controller and drive. I was able to add the new sata drive into the LVM system using system-config-lvm. All was fine until I rebooted.
I get pages of lvm errors and booting fails. It looks like it's trying to mount the volumes before the sata controller is modprobed. Is there a way to get the os to modprobe for the new controller before trying to mount? The extra drive space is on a data partition, not the boot partition.
