View 1 RepliesI currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on
two weeks i was trying find out to change the bios settings in linux from command line...can we edit the bios settings after os loaded without reboot
View 7 Replies View RelatedIm trying to test out Ubuntu while running Windows currently, once i got the ISO image installed into my USB device by following the steps on the Ubunto site, i rebooted my PC and tried to get into BIOS to change the setting to boot through the USB device.
but i was unable to open BIOS.
this is all i saw in the bottom right side of my screen as far as commands to open some thing before my PC would boot through my Cdrive and load Windows.

I updated Fedora 14 with the new kernel-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686 but when I reboot its rebooting automatically after showing the bios. What can I do now.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm successfully dual booting and running Windows XP and Fedora 11 (with EVERY recent update installed), everything works fine EXCEPT that I cannot get both System times to synchronize.. Evey time I run Fedora I find the system time is always an hour different to Windows. Evert time I correct the system time in Fedora it affects my BIOS time settings. If I then go into Windows I first have to go into the BIOS and correct the BIOS time setting by one hour before I get the correct time in Windows........ Nothing is wrong with my Windows side of things, I know this because if I don't log into Fedora then my system times stay correct, only when I correct the settings in Fedora (which are always an hour out) do I get my BIOS changed. Also in Fedora, although I live in the UK (London) Fedora ALWAYS DEFAULTS TO Guernsey, no matter how many times I correct this to LONDON, Fedora always defaults back to Guernsey.... Has anyone else experienced this as I'm sure it's a Bug in Fedora, surely it shouldn't alter my BIOS settings, should it ??
View 9 Replies View RelatedLong story short, I changed these BIOS settings (and changed them back), but now Ubuntu won't boot: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode: from Disabled to AHCI
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctlr Mode: from IDE to AHCIThe last thing it says is "Init: ureadahead-other main process (nnn) terminated with status 4". Booting off an Ubuntu CD and entering Rescue mode gets me to a shell; the file systems are still there, but Reward for first solution (other than reload): $10 Starbucks card!
I was wonding if there was a way to change from Gnome to KDE without rebooting.

View 8 Replies View Relatedi have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
Is there some workaround by changing grub settings other than rewiring the hard disks or changing in bios..
1. my bios is getting reset (low battery)
2. my hard disks are sata and ide, so the ide one is loaded as hd1 by default, cudn't find any way to change that..

Should bios setting be eufi or legacy?
Should secure boot be enabled?
I want to go back to Windows. However I can't uninstall Ubuntu since I can't boot up from CD nor USB no matter how I change the BIOS setting. I chose CD or USB but it will go straight to Ubuntu. How can I get rid of it without taking out the hard drive and have it formatted from another computer.

I've only ever had a single HDD before, but now I have 2 * 640GB drives.Does it matter what OS I install first? Will I have to change anything relating to the HDDs boot order in the BIOS?I only got 2 HDDs so in the event of needing to reinstall one of the OS's they're on completely different drives. Also, in the eventuality I need to reinstall one of the OSs is it simply a normal reinstall procedure, or because they're on two seperate drives will I need to do anything different?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought my previous laptop without thinking about whether linux would run or not, I ran into a lot of ton of trouble and had to use ndiswrapper for the wireless and I had to wait year before a patch came so the monitor could be used, and 1 year before it ran stable (back then I used ubuntu). I have a medion computer, their consumer service are very nice, however I fried the hard drive, and when I got the computer back the wireless card weren't visible from linux... I then went into the bios to find out that there were only 2 settings to choose between "off" and "last state", and last state apparently also meant off... in windows both off and last state could be turned into "on" by clicking Fn + F7... but this did not change the bios setting and therefore linux wireless were still off (I know it sounds strange).
Anyway My girlfriend needs a windows computer for gaming (and all of out computers run only linux with the exception of mine which dual boots), so I have desided to buy a new one. My main question is this: which laptop manufactures play nice with linux... I have heard only bad things about dell costumer service, and I want to buy a laptop that I can return w/o to much hassle if it doesn't perform as I am hoping...
My second question is, is there any way to check whether the graphics card and such are compatible with linux ahead of time, (w/o acualy buying it where you can do lspci and then submit it to some webpage) 3rd are there anyway to check whether the fn + key buttons and webcamp works ahead of time (this is only of minor importance, as I find that generally the sound up and brightness up/down works, and that's the most useful)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Jessie (Debian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie))
On occasion I like to play Tetravex, Sudoku, etc. I also like to play it at different levels of difficulty and complexity. It used to be very easy to change these levels, but now it appears to be impossible because Jessie offers me the possibility to close the game, move it to another workspace or minimize/maximize/resize/etc it.
But change the level of difficulty?
Nope, not a chance. That option, my dear fellow, is no longer available.
Why? Who decided to change the user interface to such an extent that simple and basic operations are no longer available? Did a MS or Mac mole infiltrate the Debian project team?
I can not change System-->Administration--> Login Screen Settings. I'm not permitted to change. Not even if I run 'sudo gdmsetup' in terminal I have permisson to change.
I use kfreebsd kernel on Debian 6.0
I just installed openSUSE 11.3 (Gnome). I am using Korean language, but I don't want to make Korean language as my default language. So I installed Korean lang as secondary language. It works well. But the problem is Korean font. Actually BEFORE installing the language, the font look much nicer. But as soon as I installed the language, the font became ugly.Even if I uninstal the language, the font still remains the same (ugly).
Where is the font setting for other languages stored? It would be nice if I can set default fonts for Korean language manually.
