View 6 Replies View RelatedI work in a small research lab in my college and we work on Windows. I am planning to switch all the computers into Linux create a network.
This is a small job in the first step. I need to hook up 3 computers together such that they all communicate with a central computer (server). The users will have to log on to their accounts and run their work from the central server, be able to run applications (vlsi, CAD) stuff from the server. I (as root) should be able to take backups (using crontab I guess) and be able to create new users, administer.
Can anyone direct me to a manual or a website or a previous post that goes through these steps. I searched the forums and was lost in my effort
I only have used Linux on a standalone PC and have never networked before.
I have trouble getting a gateway to the internet when setting eth0 with a fixed IP address. The gateway address (192.168.2.1 my modem/router) resets to 0.0.0.0 whenever I apply the changes. DHCP works fine but I need a fixed address for my server.

I have tried to flush iptables but still no effect; dig gives servfail error.I can ping both machines from one another.

When I boot my computer I get this message: Warning Pc video resolution is out of range Change setting to recommended resolution 1280x1024 @60mh So I hit ctrl alt f1 I typed in Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Nothing happens. It's been very frustrating because with everything that I've looked up it says that it's suppose to guide me through something. I desperately need my computer for school.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal:
1.) Learn about network setups on Linux
2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network
3.) Configure my (virtual) network
When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.
I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.
Im trying to run Wow with Wine , But its telling me i need to give to the wow folder write access , so im right clicking on the folder , then Permissions , And it has create or delete folder already on , but right below im selecting Read and Write but it doesnt let me do it :/ just goes back to blank .

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy DVD player is on /dev/hdc but when I put 'xine /dev/hdc' on the command line I get an error saying 'There is no demuxer plugin available to handle /dev/hdc'. If I use the mount point /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc it works fine. I am trying to get DVDs to play automatically but I can't see how to get xine to look for /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc. I have tried changing the location on the Settings -> Media tab, and the line which says 'directory a media in dvd device will be mounted' in ~/.xine/config but neither worked.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had my procedure down for setting up the keys on my various machines on my LAN when I was running Fedora9 - I just followed my own notes to set up 'ssh' on one of my machines that I am upgrading to Fedora13 and am finding discrepancies. I used to be able to set files up such that if I am on one machine, I could just ssh to another and I wouldn't be prompted for passwords or passphrases etc. Whatever I did before doesn't work any more (I keep being prompted for passwords/passphrases) - does anyone have a hint to point me in the right direction on how to set up the keys etc. - or what changed from F9 to F13? Also is the handling of ssh keys the same from F9 to F13? Reading the documentation it seems that on my old machines the man page says this:

Is there a way to change my resolution to something specific? I was trying to make my display "less-widescreen" when I accidently made it completely changed.
From the sax2 command, there is only 1400*1050 and 1600*1200, both that are not what I'm looking for and messes up my display. Now, I can't change it back to the original, much less the one I'm looking for (1600*900).
In Kubuntu 10.10, the clock is set to military time. I shouldn't have to do the math just to look at the clock. There is no setting anywhere to change it to normal time.

I would like to assign an additional private address (192.168.1.68) to the NIC to make accessing my router more convenient, but I'm having a little trouble. I'm not using the Network Settings module in YaST because whenever I've tried before it has usually resulted in my internet connection failing and being unable to remove the alias info I tried setting in YaST. So, instead, I'm just trying to do it by editing the configuration directly. I'm also using it as an opportunity to learn a little bit more about Linux. So far, all I've done is add an extra line to my /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file. Originally the contents of the file were as follows.

I have searched around about this but have had no luck - I have two laptops both running Mint 8, and I would like to use Giver to send files from one to the other. When I bring up Giver on each laptop, it only sees itself, not the other computer. Both computers are connected to the same router for internet access. How do I go about setting the network up? I don't need any advanced network stuff - I simply would like to use Giver.

I would like to be able to change my BIOS setting to enable me to access a live cd or dvd to try some Linux Distros. At the moment ,when I access the BIOs ,it willl not stay as adjusted ,it ignores the settings ,it goes to default.
