My Linux system is running Fedora 12, and it has been working fine since I bought it several months ago. But when it got rebooted the other day after a kernel upgrade, the sound system appears to have disappeared. I can play movies but there is no audio channel, and games have no sound.Checked in /dev and things like sndstat, pcmixer, audio don't exist.I don't know what sound card was originally installed or if the sound is built into my motherboard - I can probably find out if necessary but I have not yet taken the machine apart to look.Question - is there any easy way to probe the system and figure out what hardware is installed? Can I reload the sound drivers? Not sure what the correct procedure is in the current situation.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had good working installation of Fedora 12 x86_64 on my desktop, but few days ago, during watch movie in mplayer, sound disappeared. Till today i can't figure out, what happened - no errors displayed, no changes in configuration and no sound (both KDE and Gnome).
I checked soundcard in ubuntu live cd and it works fine. Also on login screen in my current Fedora 12 "beep" plays when i choose user, but after this i have no sounds.
I have up to date system, pulseaudio installed (i tried to remove it, but with no effect - without it also no sound).
Strange thing is, that sound disappeared during normal work, not after update or install anything.

I have a clean installation of 11.04 Alpha 3 and have Virtual Box on it with XP running. Along with XP, I have installed there my Thunderbird with no problems.
This morning, I have upgraded the system from Alpha 3 to Beta release but I forgot to backup my important files [files stored on my Thunderbird installed on XP Guest OS ]. I have there really important things to restore including my mail contacts.
After the upgrade, I have found out [not curious about this] that the Virtual Box was not installed on my upgraded beta version.
Is there a way to restore my files? Or is there a way to revert my system back to Alpha 3?

1. It used to be or is? 64-current multilib, however, before the upgrade I commented out any blacklisted packages in slackpkg's blacklist file (including aaa_eflibs)
slackpkg update, install-new, upgrade-all, clean system (removed all the packages that were specified in changelogs.txt as removed)
When started X two things were wrong.
1. XFCE icons disappeared
2. The mouse pointer was going crazy
2. I fixed it by following Eric's advice and created a file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-mouse.conf where I put the Input section from my xorg.conf
I'm still at loss when it comes to the icons.
btw, I've reinstalled my nvidia binary blob, somehow it doesn't seem to see it. Does the new Xorg use xorg.conf anymore?
I have been so happy using Debian Lenny. But just lately my sound has disappeared. I have checked the system and apparently it is SoundMax Integrated Digital Sound that I have on board. I have tried lots of things to get it going but to no avail. I have the Debian CD's. Is there a chance that it might be on these and I could re-install it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had some problems about a week ago with installing Python2.6-minimal (as an issue, it got resolved), however, after the problem was resolved, 'Add/Remove Applications' disappeared after upgrade was complete. I usually do not use this program for installing, etc., if I can help it, but do use it more often for web address reference when I am considering installing a new program, etc. Question is,is there some way to find out if it is merely lurking somewhere in my system... & then to once again add it to my menu list? Or, if that is not the case, to reinstall it via apt-get, aptitude, or some way like this? I could not find this application (or whatever it is called) in the Synaptic Package Manager.

All my plugins disappeared, and browsing new plugins to install only lets me see those up to letter 'F.' Better yet, any workarounds to this? Possibly just download the plugins myself (although I can't seem to find any direct links?)

View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed JACK and Ardour to try out. Later I decided against it and so I uninstalled them. After restarting my computer, I noticed that the sound applet has disappeared from the panel, although the battery and mail icons are still present. There is still sound coming out of my laptop speakers, but it is stuck at whatever volume I had it set on before the last time I shut down. Volume sliders inside Banshee and suchll function, but I cannot change the overall system volume, and my keyboard shortcuts for this have stopped working as well. When I go into System->Preferences->Sound, all I get is a message that says "Waiting for sound system to respond." and nothing happens. I've tried searching around for a solution, but nobody I could find seems to have had aimilar problem, and none of the various other solutions proposed have worked for me. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 by the way.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried doing an upgrade straight from fc5 to fc10. The upgrade seemed to go all right but once it was completed I've noticed some issues. My main issues are these:
1. After the upgrade all my desktop icons have disappeared and I'm not sure how to recover them. (this applies to all user account on a home machine)
2. When I click the right mouse button on the desktop I get no context menu but I do get the menu when I right click on my top or bottom menu bars.
3. When I try to launch any applications, games, etc., I see the icon show up in the bottom menu bar for a few seconds but then it disappears and the application never launches.
Those are the primary problems I'm encountering right now. I know the files in the home directories are still there (I did CTRL-ALT-F2 into a terminal and logged in as root. Normally I would've done CTRL-ALT-F1 but when I did I saw acpid messages and no prompt.) I've looked through the forums here but nothing I came across quite seemed to fit my needs.

Here is my uname and everything:
i'm running kubuntu 9.10 amd64, and like so many times before with GNU/linux, after the following commands:
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude full-upgrade
there is no sound, neither from vlc or from audacity.
i've turned up the volumes in both the mixer and the alsamixer.
I'm running 32bit Lenny on an older Dell Dimension 2400 running the 2.6.26 Kernel. This box was mainly used to play movies for my son over the network (most are encoded by me using xvid and lame). One of my kids wanted to use the computer to watch videos on ...... I attempted to install the flashplugin-nonfree from the backports and it kept timing out on downloading the package, so I ran apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade. I rebooted and tried the flashplugin-nonfree again and finally got ..... videos to play but there was no sound. I assumed it was a permission issue, so I switched users and attempted to play some of the movies which I've played before and currently the video plays fine but the audio sounds very ugly. I attempted to play an mp3 using mpg123 from the command line and I get mostly static. You can hear some sound but it's all jumbled and there is a lot of static. I have a creative soundblaster card using the EMU10k1 driver. Everything was working fine before I started mucking with the flashplugin and I'm afraid something I "upgraded" may have caused my issue.
Any suggestions? Is there a way I can remove any sound related drivers etc and attempt to reinstall them? I attempted to run sudo alsaconf but afterwards, it acts like there is no sound card. a reboot resolves that issue as I didn't save any changes, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I've become spoiled by all of the newer distros which detect all of my hardware and everything is configured for me.
I have been using F11 and everything was fine. (I've been using many different. distos but decided to settle here)
However, after upgrading to F12, I have no sound. I used Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso to perform an upgrade.

So my sound doesn't work. Before I upgraded to 14 I was using 13 and it didn't work either upgraded to 14 and it still didn't work. So then I uninstalled pulseaudio and reinstalled pulsaudio still to no avail.

get my sound working again. It worked on my 11.2 installation although I had some problems then too.
The installation I use is running in vmware 2.0. It's running on a laptop which I use for my company. Since the company only support xp I don't want to overwrite that installation with opensuse. Since I like opensuse personally I use it within vmware for my personal purposes (during evenings/weekends). Beside I have opensuse running on physical hw for file/printing/mail purposes which is used by the whole family.
The sound 11.3 produces is garbled. I did followed the advice in 'SDB:Audio troubleshooting'. What I notice is that speaker-test is producing this output:

I know that beta is unstable, but I didn't expect my sound to quit working. Especially because it was an upgrade and not a clean install. On another thread I saw that "pulseaudio -k" but it did nothing for me. I don't even know if my sound card is being detected.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOnce again, after upgrade - NO SOUND. Read all the various forum attempts at getting sound working. Tried them. Still doesn't work. Has been an ongoing problem after each release. Pulseausdio has been removed but still seems to be there somehow, as in, when running alsamixer, the following is output:

or, aplay -l, produces:
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...
so, I guess that's the problem. But how do you get it to recognise the card? The only thing that has been done since upgrading was to remove pulseaudio which wasn't part of the prior install in anycase but somehow injected itself during the upgrade.
