I recently updated my computer Using 9.10 and I updated on the 14th. Before the update my sound was working great. No problems, but afterwards my sound is completely gone and under hardware when I click the sound option on the speaker icon I get nothing listed under hardware.
I am using the HP DV2810 US notebook PC. With this being listed as the audio device.
I will also list the updates from my synaptic history. I'm having to use Win7 . And i only wanted that for the few games that one run well in wine.
Upgraded the following packages:

I am using Natty in Classic Gnome mode with a custom icon set, Awoken. It is doing fine, but an upgrade was released a few days ago and the installation fails:
Code:
Preparing to replace awoken-icon-theme 2.0~ppa1~natty2 (using .../awoken-icon-theme_2.1~ppa1~natty1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement awoken-icon-theme ...
[Code]....
There is a page for awoken-icon-theme package on Launchpad, but I cannot find a way to submit a bug on it. If I try "ubuntu-bug awoken-icon-theme", it is rejected because it is not an Ubuntu package. I understand that. Should I try to contact the developer directly?
How can I resolve this error and get the upgrade installed?

I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu on my small 64GB SSD alongside my main drive for storage. I got everything set up just how I like it (customized clearlooks with Ubuntu Mono Light icons) the same as I have it on my laptop. I disabled all system sound effects. This morning, I wake up to it having a different icon set, and the menus having an identical grey scheme. In addition, the Ubuntu system sound effects are playing, even though in the settings it says they are disabled.I'm not really sure what's wrong! It's the same in both compiz and metacity. Here's a screenshot. Note how the boring old-style theme is applied in the update window and the menu at the top, yet the customizing themes window has the correct appearance for the buttons (funny coincidence)EDIT: I think I've narrowed it down to gnome-settings-daemon. When I try to initialize it via the terminal I get this:
** (gnome-settings-daemon:3852): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.SettingsDaemon
** (gnome-settings-daemon:3852): WARNING **: Could not acquire name

I bought a $400 Dell Vostro V130, and decided to put 10.10 netbook remix onto it. (Vostro V130 owners: after the reboot into the new system, there is no GUI. worse, after log in, a startx means the screen goes dead. fortunately, a power key event is still detected, so reboot still works cleanly. after I did a full apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, and apt-get upgrade, the screen and remix worked.)
I would now like to increase the bass, systemwide (so that ..... gets sound that is a little better). the speaker icon on the top right gets me into sound preferences, but I do not see an equalizer.

I've got no sounds from my audio card. I have established this knowledge by confirming it by using two separate sets of speakers. In addition, there is a weird muted icon in the top left corner. I've looked through the sound settings, including alsamixer, and I cannot find whats muted. Please see attached screenshot. As you can see, my output it muted, but the speaker is back (see a) in screenshot), not white like it normally is (see b) in screenshot). How to restore sound from my audio ports?

my issue is as my Title "Lost Top Sound Icon & Can't control volume with Keyboard" OS: Ubutnu 9.10 x64 - Karmic Koala Lost the Top Panel Sound Icon, I even go to: System > Preferences > Sound Message Pops Up: Waiting for sound system to respond
Funny thing I do get Ubuntu OS Audio sounds Now as well I lost control of my Volume with my Keyboard, pretty sure it has to do with the same Sound icon in the Top panel that is missing The only way I can control Audio is Manually using: gnome-alsamixer 0.9.7
It sucks big time, because I can't control my Audio when ever I need to mute it or upper/lower it through my keyboard fastly when needed. having to manually opening an application to be able to change/control the Audio volume is a huge hassle for me

I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.
I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.

I've HP 6735b laptop and I was running my sound with rebuilding alsa
./configure --with-card=hda-intel
Ubuntu 9.04 updated itself and after I've realized that sound is coming both speaker and headset while headset is plugged. I restarted it, and sound has gone completely. I've tried to install alsa again with --with-card=hda-intel and it worked, sound came back but still both headset and speaker work together while headset plugged. I've tried something at here [URL]. After that sound has gone completely again. I've tried to install alsa again --with-card=hda-intel but didn't came back. Now I've got no sound also the sound icon at the top panel is gone too.

I'm not able to hear any sounds from my system. The panel does not have the volume control button anymore. I'm not able to run System -> Preferences -> Sound. I get an error saying "Waiting for sound system to respond" And if I run 'pavucontrol' in the terminal, I get "Connection failed: Connection refused"
Also recently I've noticed that when I run some commands in the terminal I often get this message "Home directory /root not ours." Can this be related to the sound problem? I am on the system as root.

I know that beta is unstable, but I didn't expect my sound to quit working. Especially because it was an upgrade and not a clean install. On another thread I saw that "pulseaudio -k" but it did nothing for me. I don't even know if my sound card is being detected.
