Fedora X86/64bit :: Playing Audio Via Sound Applet On Gnome Taskbar?
Jul 23, 2009I am trying to play sounds via : sound applet on gnome taskbar, right click: sound prefs, sound vol is set via applet at say 45%, yet I can't hear the alert sounds I am pressing such as, glass & sonar, is this common with pulse atm or a combo of that and my onboard realtek ac-97 sound chip?

Feb 11, 2011Recently I installed JACK and Ardour to try out. Later I decided against it and so I uninstalled them. After restarting my computer, I noticed that the sound applet has disappeared from the panel, although the battery and mail icons are still present. There is still sound coming out of my laptop speakers, but it is stuck at whatever volume I had it set on before the last time I shut down. Volume sliders inside Banshee and suchll function, but I cannot change the overall system volume, and my keyboard shortcuts for this have stopped working as well. When I go into System->Preferences->Sound, all I get is a message that says "Waiting for sound system to respond." and nothing happens. I've tried searching around for a solution, but nobody I could find seems to have had aimilar problem, and none of the various other solutions proposed have worked for me. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 by the way.

Feb 10, 2011I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.
I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.

Sep 30, 2010After restarting my system my task bar has gone completely missing. I'm on Mandriva Gnome. All I got is a desktop with icons on it, but no task bar or control menu whatsoever. Alt+F1 doesn't invoke anything, nor does Alt+F2. Actually I've tried quite a lot of key combinations but to no avail. The only way to start my browser I could think of was by putting an html extention on some file and launch it this way, so you can imagine how bad the situation is. I can't start Terminal and even if I could I don't know what to do anyway. I can't actually start anything. I can't create a launcher on my desktop as well (I came across some solution involving this). As soon as I minimise any window it simply disappears. how to make my system work again?

Sep 22, 2010Is there any other program that will work with the taskbar applet other than gwibber? I tried using it, but the interface seems really vague to me and drives me nuts. At the same time, the taskbar applet (showing up under the mail icon), makes it much more integrated than just installing a random standalone application.

Mar 25, 2011i have some trouble connecting to the wireless of the dormitery where i live in. so that is what i already did: connecting to the hidden wireless network via nm-applet i typed in my personal user data using "sudo pppoeconf" connecting to the internet using "pon dsl-provider"
so after i did that everything was working out very well and i was able to use the internet without a problem! but after i restarted the computer the nm-applet was gone so i can't connect to the hidden wireless network anymore. if i try to start nm-applet manually the terminal says:

Jul 26, 2010I just upgraded (as a fresh install) to Fedora 13. In so doing I kept the old /home partition. My NetwokrManager Applet is missing from the top bar. But if I login instead as a different user, then it is there. When I did the install, I had to create a (new) user as part of the process. The old passwd file had two users, one called admin, and the other myself. I logged in initially as the new user, and created the admin user keeping the same home directory, user ID and group ID. I then logged out, logged in again as admin, and removed the new user. I then added myself as a user keeping the same home directory, and user and group IDs.. For some reason admin has the applet but I don't. I also don't see how to add it except as a custom laucher using nm-applet, and that didn't seem to work.

Aug 21, 2010Yesterday while trying (unsuccessfully) to get a new Bluetooth dongle set up I lost the network manager applet. When I rebooted, after giving up on Bluetooth in Ubuntu, I had no way of connecting to my wireless network. In command line (iwconfig & iwlist scan) I was able to see the wireless router. So the wireless card is working correctly. How do I reinstall the network manager applet? Oh even when use a wired connection to the router there is no connection.

Jul 29, 2011I am having issues with wifi on my Lenovo X220. What has occurred is that the network applet in the notification bar no longer shows me any wireless network options. When I click on the applet, the drop down shows me: Wired network: disconnected (greyed out), VPN connections, Enable networking (checked), Connection information (greyed out), and Edit connections. Missing is Wireless connections. This occurred "out of the blue" in the middle of using the computer (i.e. NOT just after a reboot or new driver installation, etc.)
I have noted that:
1. Wired ethernet works just fine.
2. Wireless (wifi) works when I boot into Windows 7 or into a fresh Ubuntu USB Start up disk (implying that this is a software issue, not hardware).
3. The hardware led for wifi is OFF (whereas the Bluetooth light is on.) In Windows or using a fresh ubuntu from USB, this light turns on normally.
This may be irrelevant, but the issue started yesterday when I noticed that the trackpoint scrolling that I had enabled using gpointing-device-settings was not working. I ran that app and checked the settings, which were normal. I then reset the computer, and found the trackpoint was working just fine, but I had no wifi. A few resets later, the problem was not solved.

The hardware drivers are working and I can connect to my wireless network but...The annoyance is the wireless icon in the task bar does not show a connected status. Instead I get a grayed out icon with a red exclamation point over it. I am connected though.

Aug 1, 2010I have a desktop computer and a NAS, running Kubuntu & Ubuntu. I use WOL to wake the NAS and then mount the drives (NFS) on my desktop.
I've placed an icon on my KDE desktop which wakes the NAS and mounts the drives, this works great, but I've set it to run in terminal so I can enter the password for mounting the drives. This leaves me with an open window which I don't want to close because the NAS is set to shutdown 15 minutes after ssh logout.
My question is how can I minimize the open terminal window to an icon on my taskbar?

Jul 8, 2011I've installed chromium browser package from Index of /repositories/openSUSE:/11.4:/Contrib/standard I notice that the taskbar icon has been missing (for quite some time) - I can confirm it on 3 different openSUSE 11.4 installations - on my laptop, my home HTPC/gaming rig and the worstation at work. The icon in the gnome main menu->internet->chromium looks fine but the icon I get in Compiz Ring Switcher seems to be the same white box icon with the blue bar. I'm sure it started happening since an update of Chromium in Feb/Mar timeframe. Does anyone else face similar problem and may be found a solution to get the icon fixed in the taskbar? I've attached a screenshot showing the problem.

Oct 16, 2010I have assigned ip address to laptop by editing /etc/network.interfaces. From next reboot the Network Manager Applet which was present on right hand upper corner, disappeared. I wonder why? This has happened with 9.04, 9.10 and now in 10.04. Another question is, are Network Manager settings (ip) and /etc/network/interfaces do correspond to same thing or not? As I have narrated above, since network manager applet is no more visible how to see the physical network cable connectivity status (as we do in windows xp)? (is there any other app of such kind or what?)

Jan 10, 2010After a recent upgrade I have lost the top right icon in the top panel - so I cannot Set Status, Lock Screen, Guest Session, Switch User ..... Restart, Shutdown. I have right clicked on the top panel and installed the Shutdown icon so I can shutdown but I have lost all the other functions including the 60secs countdown. Is there any way I can get the standard top right icon in the top panel?
