i have just completed update to 11.4 : all my Desktop Ikons have disappeared My Ikons were old-style KDE3 type displayed over entire desktop HOW can I restore my Ikons ?
View 4 RepliesI tried doing an upgrade straight from fc5 to fc10. The upgrade seemed to go all right but once it was completed I've noticed some issues. My main issues are these:
1. After the upgrade all my desktop icons have disappeared and I'm not sure how to recover them. (this applies to all user account on a home machine)
2. When I click the right mouse button on the desktop I get no context menu but I do get the menu when I right click on my top or bottom menu bars.
3. When I try to launch any applications, games, etc., I see the icon show up in the bottom menu bar for a few seconds but then it disappears and the application never launches.
Those are the primary problems I'm encountering right now. I know the files in the home directories are still there (I did CTRL-ALT-F2 into a terminal and logged in as root. Normally I would've done CTRL-ALT-F1 but when I did I saw acpid messages and no prompt.) I've looked through the forums here but nothing I came across quite seemed to fit my needs.
Upgraded to 11.4 opensuse from 11.1, now no desktop, just a background displays.
I re-upgraded using the Network method of installation and still the results are the same.
Last night I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop and now X has stopped working. I can go into run level 3 OK.
I have tried removing the xorg.conf file, using a copy of the install xorg.conf. I have also tried reinstalling the ati drivers

the ATI drivers stop at 75% and do not complete.
If I go into run level 3 and run startx the screen goes black and all the keys stop working (Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc..)
I can attach the Xorg.0.log if you like, but it does not look strange.
I am sure the hardware is OK as I have my system dual boot with 11.2 and 11.3.

View 6 Replies View RelatedLast week my parents' PC conked out the day before I was due to leave the country, so in the few hours I had to try and knock up a solution, I set up a very old second machine in the house running openSUSE 11.3 with XFCE. I'd previously replaced the default login display manager with GDM, which evidently has various bugs. Aside from the cursor continually spinning around showing as busy, when I added a new user account for my parents, the login box showed two entries under my own name. It's only on hovering the mouse over the latter entry that my parents' username shows up. Anyway, I had to explain this and a million other quirks to them in a rush, but the system was all working and they managed to get me an email from it the following day.
Since then, however, when they reach the login screen they say there is just an image of a computer monitor, with the OS version and domain, but no usernames to choose from or other options anywhere, and hence they can find no way to login. I have no remote access to the machine and can only talk over the phone. I suggested a few key combos to see if anything happened, and they booted once in failsafe mode, but no luck.
What could have happened? Is there a key that would show the users again? Perhaps there's a way to get to a console login, but could they get back to a GUI easily after that? Unfortunately my parents are really not adept at these things and every instruction I give has to be repeated endlessly after which they usually get it wrong a couple of times first, so trying to do anything administrative or more clever than a few key presses or mouse clicks is going to be nigh on impossible. Running a live CD would be likely out of the question since they'd need to change the BIOS boot order first.
After messing up with gnome3-branding(gfxboot),I removed itow grub is back to minimal.There is no graphical bootloader anymore.I tried reinstalling opensuse-brandingt it says "message not found"

I read somewhere that 'nomodeset' should be added to the kernel line in menu.lst, so I added this manually. However, on rebotting my bootsplash had disappeared. I've since read that I actually didn't need this setting with the repo version of the driver so I removed it, but still no bootsplash.

Now when I boot up I get a pop up dialogue saying the login greeter widget is missing and to check my configuration. Clicking OK on the pop up drops me to the console login.

I used KDE3 with 11.0 with some KDE4 apps till I needed some applications from the KDE4 factory tree and mistakenly left the repository active. Next time the online update also updated most of the applications I would rather keep, and as a result the KDE3 disappeared from the KDM login choices. So I have two questions:1. how to enable users to select KDE3 at login (currently I have to select failsafe mode and run startkde manually)2. how to replay back an update I didn't want to have?
Perhaps a combination of the above: can I upgrade to OS11.2 and keep KDE3? (please don't tell me to switch to KDE4, I acknowledge and appreciate the effort and the improvements that KDE4 got, but it's still not a replacement for KDE3 - there are so many simple things which are impossible in the new version)
I installed the nvidia driver from the official repository for openSUSE 11.3 and now everything works perfectly, except i get a verbose splash screen after the grub menu.It has worked after i upgraded from 11.2. In my menu.lst it already says splash=silent.If you want more information, please ask, because i don't know where to look or what to show you (i'm fairly new to linux in general).

Before the upgrade NetworkManager would run just fine at start up, now I have to explicitly run the command from a console using the root user to start it.
(My problem is the same as this one, only in gnome instead of kde)
I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading the distribution from 10.1 to 11.3 I was not able to start the GNome-Desktop. The first error message I received was "maximum number of x display failures reached". I figured out that there was a problem with the ATI Display driver. I guess I fixed this one now, since I do get a Login-Screen.
But after login, I only have a completely empty Desktop (no Icons, no Taskbar, etc.). Also Keyboard-Shortcuts don't work. I tried it with different user-logins, but always the same result. Then I found information regarding gconftool-2 and the recursive -unset switch. Tried this one for /apps/panel and /apps/nautilus. But still no Desktop. Below is some information from .xsession-errors, which I don't know how to resolve.

However, when I turned on my laptop this morning my wallpaper is now plain white, my desktop items have disappeared and my top panel has been removed. View 4 Replies View RelatedI setup a debian home server some time ago and have successfully setup samba so my windows machines can access them and upload/download data off it.I have setup opensuse on this desktop and after allowing smb through the firewall I now seem to have read only access to the smb shares.I am using the same username and password as I do on my windows machine, so in theory smb server should see my username and password and allow me read/write, like it does in win7. Is this correct?
Having just thought about it I think samba is just a tool to get shares working between linux/windows and macos.Is samba even the best tool for linux - linux sharing? how do I get read/write access to my shares in opensuse?or do I use another program to see my shares?I'm a bit new to this linux- linux sharing so I apologies.

right now am posting this from ubuntu safe mode, when i login normally what i get is just a plain space without desktop alt+f2 also not working there, only thing i can do from there is ctrl+alt+del and a window came without borders and i can restart or shutdown pc.
i had installed compiz configuration window and tried to enable cube desktop and it showed some conflict with other plugins and i had pressed disable this plugin and all tick mark in that configuration window gone after that this problem occurred
I had Ubuntu KArmic Koala with Java sun-sdk 6 installed and everything worked fine. After Upgrade to 10.04 via Update Manager - no java detected...

I have a clean installation of 11.04 Alpha 3 and have Virtual Box on it with XP running. Along with XP, I have installed there my Thunderbird with no problems.
This morning, I have upgraded the system from Alpha 3 to Beta release but I forgot to backup my important files [files stored on my Thunderbird installed on XP Guest OS ]. I have there really important things to restore including my mail contacts.
After the upgrade, I have found out [not curious about this] that the Virtual Box was not installed on my upgraded beta version.
Is there a way to restore my files? Or is there a way to revert my system back to Alpha 3?
