OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound After Upgrade To 11.3 From 11.2
Aug 7, 2010
get my sound working again. It worked on my 11.2 installation although I had some problems then too.
The installation I use is running in vmware 2.0. It's running on a laptop which I use for my company. Since the company only support xp I don't want to overwrite that installation with opensuse. Since I like opensuse personally I use it within vmware for my personal purposes (during evenings/weekends). Beside I have opensuse running on physical hw for file/printing/mail purposes which is used by the whole family.
The sound 11.3 produces is garbled. I did followed the advice in 'SDB:Audio troubleshooting'. What I notice is that speaker-test is producing this output:
Code:
speaker-test 1.0.23
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)

No sound, no ....., skype, rhythmbox, Ubuntu sounds ......nada. For a while, each of these programs had sound, while others did not. Now nothing. I've done a lot of searching, tried a few solutions, no joy. It's possible that I did some damage in the flash plugin.

I am relatively new to the world of Ubuntu and I know others have had very similar problems but I have yet to find a solution. I recently upgraded to 10.4 and lost my sound. I tried installing and uninstalling PulseAudio and various ALSA utilities but I have not been able to resolve my issue. Strangely, when I try to play an mp3 in an application like VLC and then open up the PulseAudio volume control, I can see a playback bar as if an audio signal is going out. I am not, however, able to hear any sound via internal speaker, analog headphones, usb headset, etc. I ran aplay -l and got the following result:

I have no sound after upgrading to 11.04. Sound control panel and test speakers emits no sound. The new music player won't play sounds from music CDs either.
I thought I had listened to a music CD since upgrading early last week, but not sure. I definitely don't have sound today even after rebooting.

I have suse 11.4 installed and I wish to replace the on-board sound chip with an add-on sound card. The following are available at my local shop but they cannot advise whether any will work on Linux Suse 11.4.
Anyone know which of these cards will work on Suse 11.4?
Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD
Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Asus Xonar DS

I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:

openSUSE 11.2 64bit
libxine1 from Packman
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).
alsa-info here - [URL]
Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!
here's a lovely pic - [URL]

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.

I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)

After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.
I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify, firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.

After upgrade today, I cannot record sound. All the equipment works fine when I boot into Windoze...
Running Audacity from a terminal gives me this message as it starts:
Code:
Expression 'stream->capture.pcm' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 3653
Google has thrown up some old posts (some here) - none really relevant and a hint on a mailing list that it may be a bug...

that said on to my problem. I have a Hauppauge hvr 950-q that I had been using with 10.04(64-bit) since it came out with no issues at all(non that i could not fix anyways) had mythtv set up using mythubuntu and all was great. I upgraded to 10.10(64-bit) last night and cannot get sound to work during live tv. If i watch an old recording the sound works. Sound also works everywhere else on my system. Before the upgrade the audio setting in the backend configuration of the tv card was set to /dev/dsp2 this no longer works. if i put it at that(i have to enter it manually) then i have no sound and if i try to change Channel the tv feed crashes.
I have tried /dev/dsp2,1 i even tried /dev/snd/contolC1 wich i got from browsing around in /dev and found this to point to my 950-q all with same results. If i use alsa:default as the audio device in the backend i still get no sound but i am at least able to change channel.everything works in TVTime.i am simply at a loss. My next step was going to be a clean install of 10.10 but i thought i would check here before taking such a drastic step.

I used to listen music and watch films with my with my laptop but, after an upgrade (to 10.04 lucid) it is impossible to hear any sounds. The sound card is detected and it works since making the laptop boot from live CD (of ubuntu 10.10) I get sounds without problems. I tried to reinstall alsa-base and alsa-utils with no results. Everything looks OK, but the sound! (It's not muted!)

The sound stopped working, supposedly after upgrade and reboot (although the last upgrade was Gimp updates, as far as I remember). I rebooted the computer, then tried to play a sound and nothing came out of the speakers. The sound card (CA0106 Soundblaster) is detected, I can still adjust sound level and all the settings, but no sound is produced.
I tried running ALSA in terminal (as suggested by some comments in threads that I googled) and un-muting the speakers, but they were already un-muted.
I've also updated the Kernel to 2.6.39 just to see if this is a Kernel bug and if this might help, but it didn't. Also not a hardware problem (works in Windows).

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing. The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

I upgaded my system last weekend with a Gigabyte GZ-X58A-UD5 motherboard, i7 processor, ASUS EAH5770 video card, and 12 GB RAM. Sound has been erratic since then. It generally works for a short time after a reboot, but after awhile (within a few hours) it stops working properly or even completely. I've tried several different settings in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but nothing I've tried helps.
I am running Kubuntu 9.10 64-bit.
Here is the output of aplay -l code...
I don't have anything connected to the HDMI connection on the ATI video card, and only inputs on the M Audio Delta 44 card.

I installed OSSv4 replacing the default ALSA and everything worked just fine with some workarounds... until I upgraded to Lucid Lynx.
Now apps like Totem and Rhythmbox which use the gstreamer framework have no sound. Does anybody know why?
Everything else works, like gnome-sound-recorder, even flash.

The title pretty much says it all, the sound on this system was working fine until I ran the upgrade to Lucid. I've tried everything in the standard troubleshooting guide, the sticky threads and plenty of forum searches but so far I've come up with nada. For some reason Ubuntu refuses to see my soundcard, no matter how much I twist and tweak it. It's an Asus M3A78 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1200 chip (snd-hda-intel). Here's most of the relevant output, hopefully someone can easily spot what's going on because I'm getting snow-blind staring at the monitor. code...

So i upgraded to 10.04 a few months ago, right after it was released. clean install. it worked perfectly out of the box, or so it seemed. I had had sound problems in 9.10 that i didn't experience after i upgraded... until i tried to use some headphones a few days ago. when i connected the headphones, the speakers wouldn't mute. i thought it was no big deal. i had the same issue in 9.10 and it was fixed after i upgraded alsa. i figured i'd try the same thing. I used the same alsa upgrade script i used last time [URL] and it fixed the jack sensing and the sound worked perfectly... for about 5 minutes. after a short while of playing audio, sound would stop playing. i'd stop getting sound from video files, audio files, and even from my browser. i'd have to reboot to get sound again... only to lose it again in about 10 minutes. Now it's regressed to the point where i have no sound even after i reboot.
weird thing is, when i test out an audio file with aplay, it works... even if i just get garbage sound from some mp3 files.
anyway, i've got an HP dv7 and this is my aplay -l output
Code:
sleepee@sleepee-laptop:~$ aplay -l

I can't get sound to work and am not sure how to trouble shoot. The sound DOES work when first booting, and I can make it play a test beep with the sound config app. But I cannot get sound from any other application. One possibly relevant fact is that I see a lot of I/O errors early in the boot process, but they flash by quickly so I cannot quote them.
