Hardware :: Onboard Audio Device Not Detected For ASUS P4S533 MB?
Mar 16, 2010
I recently installed Arch Linux on an old desktop machine. Everything works well except the onboard audio isn't detected at all.
I am using the 2.6.32-ARCH kernel
My lspci output is:
Code:
# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS645DX Host & Memory & AGP Controller
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge (AGP)
[Code]....
On another note, the manufacturer (ASUS) actually provides Linux audio drivers for my motherboard (model: P4S533). I attempted to install them, but the configuration process involves using make menuconfig, make xconfig, or make config to add the drivers to the kernel (I think) and I'm still a relatively new Linux user and had no clue what I was doing.

When I run the audio configuration I get:
The following audio device was detected:
Vendor: nVidia
Model Coporation GF100 High Definition Audio Controller
Module snd-hda-intel
but I do not hear sound.
The ALSA driver version is 1.0.14rc3
Lib package is: 1.0.17.-1.e15
Utils package is: 1.0.17-1.e15
The sound log has:
class: AUDIO
bus: PCI
detached: 0
driver: snd-hda-intel
desc: "nVidia Corporation GF100 High Definition Audio Controller" .....
The audio configuration sound test and the answer to the question No returns a message that says: automatic detection of sound card did not work. I am not sure what else is needed to diagnose the problem.

I am new to Linux and after a lot of research I settled on CentOS to be my OS for Linux. But I am having trouble with sound right now as I can not play audio. The command system-config-soundcard opened a gui for audio configuration saying following device is detected - Intel Corp. 82801(ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller.
Ouput for some commands are given below::
[root@localhost ~]# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) .....
[root@localhost ~]# uname -r
2.6.18-164.el5
[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 5.4 (Final)
Clicking on the volume icon gives me message that either Gstreamer plugins are not installed or sound card is not configured.
While Trying to install gstreamer using YUM, I got following message:
[root@localhost ~]# yum install gstreamer
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile .....
Setting up Install Process
Package gstreamer-0.10.20-3.el5.x86_64 already installed and latest version
Package gstreamer-0.10.20-3.el5.i386 already installed and latest version
Nothing to do
[root@localhost ~]#
So I guess gstreamer are installed but how to configure the sound card or is there any other problem.

One of the old machines in the lab has a problem with onboard LAN, it's detected but not sensing cable - most likely transiver has died.I am trying to revive the machine temporarily by disabling onboard Intel Pro100 and installing a perfect working PCI Realtek 8139 card, but F14 is not loading the module.Being smart I added "alias eth0 8139too" and the module loads now, but there is still no eth0 device, only lo.

I build a HTPC from an old computer and installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I'm new to Linux and have spent a few weeks tracking down and fixing a few problems.t the moment I've exhausted my ideas as to why I have no S/PDIF output, I'm trying to use the onboard audio from my motherboard. I get sound from the analog output to my computer speakers, but when I connect the coaxial S/PDIF output to my amplifier I get no sound. tried removing and reinstalling ALSA, muting and unmuting outputs in ALSA, checked my amplifier settings and inputs, and probably a few other things I've forgotten. I also tried to follow the troubleshooting and howto guides to the best of my abilityHere's a list of what I have:OS: Ubuntu 10.04LTS
Motherboard: P4C800-Deluxe
Onboard Audio: SoundMAX AD1985 AC '97 audio CODEC supports 6-channel 5.1
CPU: P4 2.60GHz overclocked to 3.12GHz

I'm running a fresh install on an intel i7 system on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard with the onboard NIC (Marvell Technology pci-e). Over the last few days I've been spending some time converting my headless web server into a media center running Boxee for our lounge.
I have managed to get *nearly* everything working with the exception of sound. The computer has onboard sound, both front and back ports, and I tried every combination of outputs and plugs.
I also checked it wasn't muted, or anything like that.
So, I wasn't able to get it working with the stock Ubuntu 10.10 stuff - I turned to Google and found a thread which suggested I download and install this.
I ran the ./install as root, and it took about 3 minutes to install everything. Rebooted and now I'm left worse off than before - this time I actually have no sound card even listed.
I've been thinking some more, and after another hour or two reading through random threads, I think it may have been a mistake to install those drivers.
I couldn't find a way to uninstall them, so I've been reinstalling all the alsa and PulseAudio packages I can find with no luck.
Now I'm stuck with doubly no-sound.
If I can't get onboard working then I'm considering buying a new graphics card with HDMI out (the current one has a hard time with Boxee), or maybe a dedicated sound card instead.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with an EVGA nForce 730i Intel mobo with onboard HDMI. Video output works. Audio output does not. I'm trying to output both to a Samsung HDTV.
I tried booting to a bootable drive with Ubuntu 11.04, and no audio.
I've essentially tried everything in every other thread. I'm using alsa mixer, I've muted S/PDIF, my settings all have HDMI output selected.
sudo modprobe snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi results in:

I am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive. Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

I recently purchased an Asus USB-N13 and am having some trouble getting it setup. I have followed this post [URL] including downloading the driver version, but I am now a little stuck. This is a laptop which used to have a Netgear Wg111v2 wireless USB adapter (laptop does not have internal wireless). That adapter died so I purchased the Asus. The day I purchased the Asus adapter they were both plugged in at the same time for a short period - not sure if that is relevant or not but just thought I should let you know. Here is some output from various commands:
lspci
Code:
ron@ron-laptop:~$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to I/O Controller (rev 21)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82855PM Processor to AGP Controller (rev 21)

I have restarted a couple of times with it plugged in and with it not plugged. At no time does it show in the Network Manager aplet.

Just installed CentOS 5.1 and it's not detecting my NIC. ifconfig produces nothing for eth0. This is a xen kernel.
I can't tell exactly what NIC this motherboard uses, the ASUS website doesn't seem to think we need to know anything more than that it's a PCIe Gigabit lan:
[URL]
lspci indicates it's an Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114.

I just built a computer and the onboard nic pluggin is loose and won't register or connect right... so I had to put another nic card in pci to connect to wired network for internet. Problem now is its delaying something fierce... i'm thinking if i can manage to uninstall or disable the onboard nic maybe things would work better... problem is i wouldn't know how to do it... I know hardware is connected via a document somewhere in the file system... if I were to delete the file would that disable the nic or would it just reinstall itself on the next boot?

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

New eeePC 1015PEM netbook, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD. Came with Win 7 Starter; I retained this and installed openSUSE 11.3 alongside. Everything works well in Win 7 Most things also work well in oS 11.3, but there is a knotty problem with audio from the built-in speakers. Headphones are OK, but the speakers don't work reliably. Others have reported this on similar machines, and a number of "fixes" have been proposed in a wide range of forums, but so far I haven't found any that work.
I've actually installed oS 11.3 twice. After the first install I had no speaker sound at all, but after a day or two fiddling around it started to work of its own accord for no reason I could point to. For unrelated reasons (a silly mistake by me in Win 7) I then had to re-install oS 11.3 from scratch. This time the speaker sound worked after install, but then it dropped out again a couple of days later. Headphone audio has remained OK throughout.
I'm aware of and have applied the acpi_osi=Linux kernel parameter to enable the Fn keys on the machine (including sound volume and mute/unmute), so it's not that. I've combed the forums and Google extensively for other suggestions, and have tried them - including installing alsamixergui. I've also installed a properly matched ALSA KMP which changed some of the alsamixer controls but didn't cure the problem. Since it all works very well in Win7 and works sometimes in oS 11.3, I conclude that the problem is not with hardware but is something in software.

I have a Asus eee box eb1501u running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bit) and I am trying to get the remote control to work. Many guides for example this one http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title...eeBox_PC_EB150 first states that you should run code...
Before I removed the Windows 7 installation I tested the remote in Windows to make sure it worked and it did. I cant see that there is a possibility to turn on or off the IR-device in the bios settings!? I would really like to make it work in Kubuntu to. I'm pretty n00bish at Linux but I think I can figure it out if someone would point me in the right direction.

I have an ASUS P5N7A-VM motherboard and was using Optical out for sound without issues running OpenSuse 11.2. I then got rid of my receiver and wanted to just use HDMI sound. I couldn't get it to work so I upgraded to OpenSuse 11.3. I simply went to the Sound control panel applet and changed it to Internal Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI). I can not get any sound from it on OpenSuse 11.3 either. I have ran sound tests from the command line "speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav" which all run without errors, but nothing comes out of the speakers. I have ran the suggestion of one post "alsa-info.sh" and here are my results:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=27...860267e7079411. I have also tried the following post which did not resolve the problem since it seems to be Ubuntu based. I have undid everything from the post as well to make sure I don't stray to far from normal.

you have an onboard soundcard that you have or may not have disabled in the BIOS, and you intend to use headphones with a USB sound card with headphone and microphone jacks (or no mic jack, it doesn't matter), but you notice that the headphones are detected. Alsamixer provides an interface to control the volume, etc etc, but still the headphones do not work..In my case, the module snd_hda_intel was being loaded for my onboard soundcard that I had disabled in the BIOS before booting the computer for the first time, and even though I tried to "activate" the USB headset in alsamixer, I still couldn't get the headset to work.
Solution as a trial: Open a terminal, and look to the code section for what you need to type.A big missing key to my puzzle is how to simply restart and/or reload a module so that it isn't necessary to unplug and plug back in the USB device. Can't I just re-discover the USB devices? (or other such hardware, such as a PCI card, or otherwise inaccessible component?)
