Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Asus USB N13 In 9.10 - NOTHING Happens (the Light On The Device Doesn't Even Blink)
Apr 1, 2010
How to set up an Asus USB N-13 wireless adapter (when i plug it NOTHING happens (the light on the device doesn't even blink)). I was trying to use this (click me), but i got confused mid way through. I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
I'm not the greatest with linux in general, I mean I know my way around it okay but theres still a ton to learn, and 11.04 is the first version to work on my custom PC without messing up after I update it so I'm left with natty. Anyway I bought my PC with an Asus U8B-N13 Wireless adapter. The disc it came with has the program to install the drivers in Windows, Mac, and Linux, but the Linux drivers need to be compile and I'm yet to have luck doing so. I've tried to somewhat follow an older guide here: [URL].. but I made it as far as extracting the .tgz, then running the make command and got a couple errors. Here is that attempt:
Code: dom@NZXT:~$ cd Desktop dom@NZXT:~/Desktop$ tar -xvzf DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100422.tgz DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100422/ DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100422/iwpriv_usage.txt DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100422/LICENSE ralink-firmware.txt DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100422/Makefile
I've encountered a very strange bug in Rhythmbox 0.12.8 on my Ubuntu 10.04 install. For some reason, anytime I have Rhythmbox running, all 3 LEDs on my Nostromo n52 gaming device blink, slightly faster than 1 blink per second (or a little over 60 Hz).The blinking does interfere with use of the n52. While the blinking occurs, only about half of my n52 keypresses get through.I guess Rhythmbox is sending signals via USB somehow. Anyone else noticed this bug?
1. Installed a fresh 10.10 and upgraded all packages (via Ethernet). 2. Downloaded latest drivers from ASUS webiste (DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100422) 3. Unpacked and tried to compile:
The wireless card is working with the driver rt2870sta, but I've read not all the capabilities of the device is unleash unless the native driver is used.
I've used this video conferencing web app on Windows 7 and it works perfectly. [URL] But I'm having flash problems. Flash doesn't load and the light at my webcam doesn't switch on at all. Things to note:Cheese works so I know my webcam in Ubuntu is functional. I've tried purging the flash plugin and reinstalling it. It doesn't work on Chrome and Firefox so it's definitely only a flash problem. I'm not using any medication so I know it isn't me just imagining it. EDIT: I checked out [URL] Here's a screenshot: [URL] I'll check back later, Charlie the Unicorn just rang my doorbell and invited me to tea on the magic hot air balloon. Definitely not hallucinating. Definitely. Definitely.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and bluetooth turn/off is not possible. However, with 2.6.37 kernel it is possible. Now i have gathered whole info about the device(mac adress, usb port etc) from 2.6.37 and what i need is to somehow use those info in kernel 2.6.38 so that bluetooth works.
lsusb in 2.6.37 (while bt is on)

I've been using Ubuntu for a while, but I have never tried to set up a wireless device with it. I have no idea where to even begin. I've done a search of the forums but wasn't able to glean much from it.
i think the motherboard is cooked but not sure...be4 i call them up and say wtf i want to make sure i have not missed anything (i dont think i have* ok the MO is a MSI g31tm-p21 and the processor is a intel celeron e3300. when i powered it on lights on front panel came on *case has temp readings and fan controls* all of that powered on...the two case fans power on and the processor powers on cd drive powers on and HDD powers on as well so the power box is working there is not a problem with that. i recheck all cabling and its all right i had jumped the cmos a few times now. and with the cmos jumped the M/O would not even TRY to turn on so that was good. it would only turn on when jumped the right away the *keep data* setting took the batt out and waited to let the cmos clear that way. still nothing and i am still getting no post screen. keyboard dos not light up nor dos the mouse
i used WUBI to put Ubuntu on an SD card. i ran it off that for a while, and keeping my Vista. then i tried upgrading to to 10.10. there was even a special installer for GRUB in the process.
that's when the problem started. after my comp finished the upgrade, it restarted. but this time, in grub rescue. i tried some of the codes in the wiki, but everything came up unknown command. then someone in the chat told me to use a Live CD and a Super GRUB2 cd.
the LiveCD booted to a screen with a picture of a "keyboard=person with a circle around it". then after a few minutes of just that, lines of text reading:EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3567 EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3577 (and more with consecutive numbers) the Super GRUB2 cd let me get the OS list i usually get from starting up. only Vista would start up without problem. Ubuntu had.. a problem i cant recall right now.
i redid the Live CD, and im back in Ubuntu. i tried the ways of reinstalling GRUB2, as advised by the chats, but nothing seemed to work as described in the reinstallation section of this.
and that is where i stand right now. also, my SD drive's light doesn't turn off now, even when there is no card in it. im kind of worried that when GRUB installed at the 10.10 upgrade, it made that a partisan.
I currently know next to nothing about networks in Linux (yes I am working on that). I have just brought a Asus n13 wireless adapter after failing to get my laptop wireless working. I am using the 2.6.32-5 Debian squeeze kernel. The device connected once after I did the following:
apt-get update modprobe rt2870sta iwconfig ifconfig wlan0 up
The device connected to wifi and was working fine. I then shutdown and rebooted to see if it would automatically connect on start up and now, although nothing seems to have changed and even after I repeated the steps above it did not connect. The network manager applet as well as listing the asus adapter(as ralink 802.11 WLAN) lists a Texas instruments PCI1410 pc card cardbus controller which i didn't before.
This is the output of iwconfig: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 Ralink STA ESSID:"" Nickname:"RT2870STA" Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:1 Mb/s RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:-39 dBm Noise level:-95 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon: ..... pan0 no wireless extensions.

I got a problem about network proxy setting. With the graphics setting interface, I set auto proxy with the URL address but it is weird that the setting only work with eth1(wireless), doesn't work with etho(wired). however my wireless driver is always a problem for Linux. i also tried export http_proxy= XXXXX:8080 it still doesn't work at all.
I have a Asus eee box eb1501u running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bit) and I am trying to get the remote control to work. Many guides for example this one http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title...eeBox_PC_EB150 first states that you should run code...
Before I removed the Windows 7 installation I tested the remote in Windows to make sure it worked and it did. I cant see that there is a possibility to turn on or off the IR-device in the bios settings!? I would really like to make it work in Kubuntu to. I'm pretty n00bish at Linux but I think I can figure it out if someone would point me in the right direction.
After 4 days of tryings I still can't set remote control in work state at Ubuntu 10.10 for using in XBMC (xbmc-standalone), but in Windows 7 working fine.I try many methods but still no luck.

Code:
... Now try using irw xbmc:$ irw Press some keys and you should get some output. ...
In ubuntu 9.10, I connect the mobile device and a icon appears in desktop, but it doesn't start and doesn't connect. I went to "network connections" -> mobile broadband -> add -> select contry, bla bla bla ->insert PIN->apply
On another note, the manufacturer (ASUS) actually provides Linux audio drivers for my motherboard (model: P4S533). I attempted to install them, but the configuration process involves using make menuconfig, make xconfig, or make config to add the drivers to the kernel (I think) and I'm still a relatively new Linux user and had no clue what I was doing.
It partially works but I got a couple of issues (using 10.04 x86-64). I use it with a Stereo headphones and a mic.
1) It only outputs in 7.1/5.1 mode and only on the left headphone. If I reselect 7.1/5.1 while an audio stream is playing then I get stereo back. I've checked with Ubuntu 10.10 live CD and apparently the left channel is mapped to front, while the right is mapped to sub-woofer. How can I fix this?
2) The mic doesn't work. When I select the Xonar D1, I can choose between Analog Input, Analog Line In and Analog Microphone. When I switch between those I can hear a click coming from my pc, as if something HW is switching. I tried playing around with alsamixer but it doesn't work. Any idea how to make the mic work?
I have installed it in multiple machines (servers, desktops, laptops)I have even installed 10.04 beta in several laptops for educational purposes without a single crash. But 10.04 crashes in laptop ASUS X50GL with processor Intel Core 2 Duo T5800.In fresh installation, it hangs always, in ANY 10.04 version, beta or stable, 32 or 64 bit, also from iso image in CD or in usb stick,I have tried all possibilities! Therefore, clever enough, I though let's do it in an indirect way: let's install the 8.04 distro (it works) and later on I will upgrade to 10.04. So I just did.Everything was fine (also the upgrade, without a single warning) until final reboot after upgrade to 10.04.hanged at boot!. There is incompatibility between 10.04 and this firmware, clearly. Unfortunately, 10.04 is not yet stable, I guess.I took a picture of the screen which I attach.
I just installed Maverick on an Asus Seashell 1215T netbook with an AMD/ATI chipset. The sound output is working fine (with the exception that I have to manually set output to either speakers or headphones rather than just plugging in headphones), but neither the internal microphone nor external microphones plugged in through the mic jack work. I do have the sound device set to the internal sound (rather than HDMI) and the volume level set appropriately. Apparently neither microphone is being recognized. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Here is the relevant section from lspci -v:

i have an asus 1201n, with nvidia proprietary driver, ubuntu 10.10.i have tried to install plymouth-manager, tried to change the theme.i have tried to change screen resolution.nothing works.i really want to change the default theme to the space-sunrise.
I'm following this guide[URl]... And, after a thousand of bad words, it works But w_scan doesn't find any channel! Have you experience with this DVB-pen? I'm using Slackware 13.37 x64
The motherboard has a SiS190 100/10 Ethernet Device. Apparently it worked once during installation and then never again. But it works fine in Win XP (in fact I have SlackWare installed in dual boot) My Internet connection is throgh an ADSL.17 may: one thing led to another and now I have more things to do and learn that time yo do it. smallpond's answer has been very important un showing the way, but Iḿ still working on it
Centos 5.2 Asus Eee box with Atom N270 and it came installed with "eLinux" which doesn't even come close to meeting my needs (low demand intranet server). But eLinux did work as far as I tested it.
First, CentOS seems to detect the Intel 945GME video chip but I end up with a blank screen. I used text mode to install CentOS. Then I searched for a solution. Found someone suggested also using the i915 driver with 945GM. That didn't work.
So, I reverted to a VESA driver. That worked except I couldn't get resolution greater than 800x600 even after I added a Mode line for 1024x768 to the xorg.conf file. However, the X interface wasn't that important. I mostly wanted into the utilities so I could fix the network.
I had tried a fixed address (192.168.1.11) since the box is supposed to be a "thin server." No luck. So, I tried DNS and tried activating again. The suggestion was that the network cable wasn't connected. When using DNS, the network hub lights flash. Something is happening.
Rebooted the computer using Puppy Linux (on a usb key). Video comes up in VESA mode. I can set it to 1024x768. It found the DNS server without any complaints. (Note: I didn't so much as touch the ethernet cable during the reboot).
Copying and Pasting isn't easy with a computer that won't connect to the LAN. But the hardware is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 2). I since tried Slackware 12.1 and it's pretty happy on that box. Vesa mode gets me 1024x768 and the ethernet works (however it thinks it's on eth1 which may or may not be a clue). I'll try CentOS on an old box for other testing.
After a respective amount of Google-ing, I did not manage to come up with an answer to this. This has been a problem for several people because Ubuntu or any other distribution that I know of does not support the Linksys AE1000 card. It's kinda a pain because my desktop needs wireless in order to connect to the internet (for several reasons...) Is anybody working on the drivers for this? I would prefer not to be stuck with Windows. I would love to run a light weight distro on it instead.
I recently downloaded the iPhone app "Handy Light" which contains an Easter Egg allowing you to tether a laptop to the phone to use the 3G as a wireless network. The only instructions I can find are for Windows or Mac. Anybody know how to do this with Ubuntu?
I am new to Ubuntu and am confused on how to fix my flashing wireless light issue. After browsing Google people are recommending that I make a script and put it into a folder, but when I try to put the file in there I get an error of "Error moving file: Permission denied".
I have installed XUbuntu 10.04 but cannot connect to WiFi. Here is what I know so far: Hardware and Software configuration: Compaq Presario 2100US XUbuntu 10.04 (installed Dec. 2010 from Live CD dated Oct. 2010) Kernel 2.6.32-21-generic Gnome 2.30 RAM Memory: 938.7 MiB Processor: Celeron Disk Space Avail 23.2 GiB Wireless Card: MSI Wireless 11G CardBus CB54G2 *MSI Driver rt2500pci located in system (see below) No wifi 'on' 'off' hardware switch on machine
Prior to the install of Xunbuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) the machine carried MSXP. The wireless card came with the machine. The machine used a cable connection by previous owner. Connection's been working fine in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackelope and Puppy Linux. Wireless card appears to be functioning. The system scans for the network, shows that connection is established by both icon in tray and message saying that a connection is made. The card shows both green lights active. The light that indicates a connection is on and randomly flickers. Tested Firefox for connection. Firefox is not receiving anything from the system. I have got the network manager functioning enough to say that I have a 'connection' but still cannot connect to server.
Network Connections wireless: linksys - mode ad hoc - MTU auto wireless: security - none (I borrow from a neighbor's wifi) IPv4: auto(DHCP) IPv6: Ignore *Driver rt2500pci located in /sys/module/rt2500pci/drivers/ (There is a 'config' file in this directory)
Help menu in 10.04 is listed as help menu for 9.04 so don't know if applicable to 10.04 debugging. When 'troubleshooting' wireless connections, I did a *sudo lshw -C network* command on terminal. The results *do not* show 'Claimed, Unclaimed, Enabled or Disabled as help menu indicates. The line that would show that information (*-network) doesn't have 'Claimed, Unclaimed, Enabled or Disabled'. I can send image of this query. I have tried two other wifi cards with similar results, no connection.
I just installed Fedora 10 on my laptop (HP dv2500 series). I have it dual booting between Fedora and Vista. The laptop has one of those wireless on/off switches and next it the LED: blue - wireless active, amber - wireless inactive. It works fine in Vista but whenever I'm using Fedora it flashes between blue and amber quite fast, stopping on blue for maybe 4 seconds, then flashes again. I am on a constant connection to the network though, no sign of connection loss.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 online today. I was using 10.04 32-bit before, and the network drivers were easy to find and install. Ubuntu did the job for me and they worked flawlessly. It was a relief I didn't need to search around.
Even though 10.10 (64bit) found the drivers for me, both ethernet and wireless, they do not seem to be working alright. I installed both, made a restart. I found that the WiFi light on my laptop stays on, even if the wireless network is turned off using either the key combination (Fn+F2), or manually turning it off.
Issues with the ethernet? I am right now using ethernet but it does not care to detect the connection. Empathy won't connect automatically as a result- says no network connection. But here I am, posting this. Evidently, there is a connection, right?
Issues with the wireless? The WiFi light stays on all the time, and it isn't able to get hang of the connection I have at home. It just won't show any wireless connections available. When I tried to connect by giving it the SSID and the encryption type and password, it didn't work. Just kept asking for the password again and again (I have checked with the router- the password is correct).
(prior to this i had 8.10 and sound) added a lot of things through command lines,etc...and accidentally stumbled on the fact that the wrong device was chosen in the sound preferences... can someone explain to me what the settings should be? i have just done a clean install of lucid lynx 32 bit i386, no dual boot, just plain clean and fresh lucid lynx. under the output tab- this is where i have a choice between: Internal Audio (analog stereo duplex) USB Audio i know the usb is my speakers now...but what is that analog thing?
under the hardware tab- the internal audio can be analog stereo duplex or analog stereo output, analog stereo input, off, or analog surround with various levels of output from 4.1 to 7.1 the usb audio has only two choices: analog stereo output or digitla stereo duplex under the input tab- internal audio analog stereo is the only device listed choice of connector: microphone 1, mic 2, line in
at the moment i dont have my headphones plugged in, dont want to complicate things. but i am hoping to get skype working and be able to leave the speakers in and when i plug in headphones they will must the speakers automatically. if it doesnt work like that i wont die...but i would like to no have to disconnect the speakers just to use headphones, which is what people i know say they have to do.
I've made a lot of progress getting my easycap 2.0 usb capture device to work with ubuntu 10.10. I've got the picture up any everything works great. But about a minute into the stream it just freezes, I need to go into "playback" and either pause then play, or click "next", it then refreshes and works again for another minute or so. I'd believe it if someone says faulty hardware because the easycap is cheap, but I don't think that's the case. Additionally, is there any way to set VLC so that when I open it, it automatically opens with my video capture device (/dev/video0) so that I don't have to go into the options and change it every time?
