Software :: Mute After Upgrading ALSA?
Sep 19, 2010I didn't (maybe still don't) have ALSA loopback so I could record streaming, so I upgraded ALSA following these instructions:[URL].. The only part I didn't follow verbatim was the final step:

I was unsure about "snd-whatever-module-you-need" so I decided to reboot.
When KDE was just about to kick in, I saw a lot of new text I had never seen before scroll past very, very fast. Then it stopped and I could see it had something to with ALSA, but I couldn't really read anything. KDE started and... now I have no sound. I checked kmixer, it looks normal. It doesn't seem to be mute. I ran alsamixer in the command line, it doesn't seem to be mute either. I ran Kcontrol and checked the audio section, couldn't figure anything out. Mar 7, 2011I think this is a bit of a complicated problem so bear with me while I explain it. I'm using an HP Laptop with Ubuntu 10.10. The laptop has the touch buttons for mute and volume up/down, and I use them all the time (at least when I was on Windows). I've very recently switched to Ubuntu and now those keys are causing problems with a game called Minecraft. Basically, when I'm playing it and use those keys, it brings me out of full screen (if I'm using fullscreen) and then seems to mute like it should, but the problem is, it doesn't UNmute when I press it again. The lighted button on the laptop goes back to showing its unmuted, but the game still has no sound. I've tried messing with the sound settings inside the game, and doing all these weird combos of when I mute/unmute and all, nothing seems to help. I usually have to restart the computer to fix it, but then if I use the button again, it does the same thing.
P.S. does anyone know of a way for these buttons to NOT interrupt full screen? I had the same problem with it interrupting fullscreen apps on windows, but then I used a program called 3RVX and it fixed it. Is there anything like this on linux?

Jul 15, 2010In the last week, I noticed that my compaq 6710b physical controls for volume control/mute stopped working correctly. The volume control is not working anymore and the mute "unmutes" itself after precisely 1 minute.
I was wondering:
1/ did an update modify anything
2/ is there a way for me to know if the problem is physical? like a physical signal sniffer of some sort, or a log that indicates that I pressed mute
3/ Am I alone? and if not, does anyone know of a workaround?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mic Mute Button Present On Laptop Is Not Working?
May 29, 2010I have a lenovo thinkpad and my internal microphone works only when i connect another mic through the jack. Even the mic mute button present on my laptop is not working.(There is no such problem on windows se7en) Earlier, even an external mic never used to work. After some searching i added "options snd-hda-intel model = thinkpad" to my alsa-base.conf file. And then the internal mic started working only when an external mic was connected.
when i type "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" i get:

Codec: Intel G45 DEVCTG
I looked into the HD-Audio-Models.txt but couldn't locate the exact model for ALC269 so i searched online and decided to put model = thinkpad as i'd mentioned earlier. But The alsa-mixer shows card to be HDA Intel and chp as intel g45 devctg. Moreover, even this partial working of mic(s) is when i choose the input source in the alsamixer to be front mic and not int mic.

May 31, 2010My Compaq Presario F700 laptop has Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221 (checking from my Windows partition). I had everything working just fine until yesterday when I attempted to manually install an alsa-linux package that I downloaded sometime ago. Although the .deb package failed to install, it seems it messed things up and now there's no sound. The speaker icon shows "All mute" and I have no clue how to fix this. How do I 'unmute' it?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Configuring Alsa (or Alsa-oss) After Hardware Upgrade?
Nov 19, 2010I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with,amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
Ubuntu :: Sound Gets Muted At Every Boot ?
Jan 27, 2010Everytime I boot Ubuntu 9.10 system there is no start-up sound. A check of the sound settings under the system/preferences showes the sound muted checkbox is checked. I can uncheck it and listen music, etc. normally the rest of the session but on a reboot it is muted again.

I am been using Fedora 14 on my HP mini for a few weeks now. Everything was working fine. However, since I have updated my system a few time using yum upgrade. I can no longer get the sound working.
If I go to Menu | multimedia | pulseaudio sound control
All the volumes levels are at 100%. However, the mute button is muted and everything I press it, it remains muted.

Nov 27, 2010I've been having some issues with my sound for a few weeks. Every time I reboot, my sound is muted. I have to open up alsamixer every time and unmute it manually. It is not the "master volume" that is muted but instead the "speaker" volume is the one that is muted. This started when i started up my computer and the ubuntu log-in sound started playing extremely loud. I quickly tried to turn down the volume while it was still booting and ever since then, i have been having this issue. Also, the volume control on my laptop no longer works, even after i adjust the volume with alsamixer. It still shows on the screen that the volume is being adjusted, but it does nothing. I hoped i explained this well enough for someone to be able to help me with this issue. Also, sorry if this issue has been posted before.

May 24, 2011I've seen loads of threads about this sound issue, and I've experienced/fixed it before (after HOURS of searching), but this time it's worse. I'm running Maverick. I accidentally muted my sound and shut down with it muted. Upon restart, no sound is present through headphones, speakers, anything. The sound card still shows up in the options. Sound also has been disabled on my LIVE DISC OF 11.04These sound problems are the absolute worst part of Ubuntu. I'm almost ready to jump ship back to...vista *shudder*

Feb 5, 2010I've got an asus a8js laptop and since installing karmic, the built in microphone is permanently on. Every once in a while I brush my finger of the mic unintentionally and it makes some mad feedback.
I've ruled out that this is caused by pulseaudio, the problem occurs when pulseaudio is off (pulseaudio --kill) and I've set .asoundrc to go straight through the hardware.
My first thought was to check alsamixer, but I muted (capture, mic, mic boost set to 0) it in there to no avail. Consequently, any time I move a slider (any one, PCM, mic, Front...) the microphone mutes for 3 to 15 seconds and then is suddenly live again.

In all the soundcard works fine, it's just that the mic is always on and I can't seem to set it otherwise.

Apr 15, 2010I've recently installed Xubuntu Lucid Beta2 on my new laptop. But I'm unable to turn the bell back on. The 'pcspkr'-module is removed from the blacklist and is loaded. However, 'alsamixer' doesn't show me any volume-options for the beep. However, 'echo -e "a"' still doesn't make a sound. I've installed the 'beep'-package, and it works, thus I am assuming that the hardware-bell itself does WORK fine. It's just deactivated/muted somewhere, and I can't find the option to turn it back on.

For some reason it works fine if the computer is booted while not being muted, but if the computer is booted and is muted, the command will not unmute.

In addition, there is a weird muted icon in the top left corner. I've looked through the sound settings, including alsamixer, and I cannot find whats muted. Please see attached screenshot. As you can see, my output it muted, but the speaker is back (see a) in screenshot), not white like it normally is (see b) in screenshot). How to restore sound from my audio ports?
