Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mic Mute Button Present On Laptop Is Not Working?
May 29, 2010
I have a lenovo thinkpad and my internal microphone works only when i connect another mic through the jack. Even the mic mute button present on my laptop is not working.(There is no such problem on windows se7en) Earlier, even an external mic never used to work. After some searching i added "options snd-hda-intel model = thinkpad" to my alsa-base.conf file. And then the internal mic started working only when an external mic was connected.
when i type "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" i get:
Codec: Realtek ALC269
Codec: Intel G45 DEVCTG
I looked into the HD-Audio-Models.txt but couldn't locate the exact model for ALC269 so i searched online and decided to put model = thinkpad as i'd mentioned earlier. But The alsa-mixer shows card to be HDA Intel and chp as intel g45 devctg. Moreover, even this partial working of mic(s) is when i choose the input source in the alsamixer to be front mic and not int mic.

In the last week, I noticed that my compaq 6710b physical controls for volume control/mute stopped working correctly. The volume control is not working anymore and the mute "unmutes" itself after precisely 1 minute.
I was wondering:
1/ did an update modify anything
2/ is there a way for me to know if the problem is physical? like a physical signal sniffer of some sort, or a log that indicates that I pressed mute
3/ Am I alone? and if not, does anyone know of a workaround?
Am running 10.4 Linux vaucher-laptop 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is there a way I can mute my laptop from the console. At times I'm in class and want to log in but... I have to make so much noise.
This will help me switch to a (Ctrl+Alt+ n) terminal and save myself from having to make such loud noises.

I think this is a bit of a complicated problem so bear with me while I explain it. I'm using an HP Laptop with Ubuntu 10.10. The laptop has the touch buttons for mute and volume up/down, and I use them all the time (at least when I was on Windows). I've very recently switched to Ubuntu and now those keys are causing problems with a game called Minecraft. Basically, when I'm playing it and use those keys, it brings me out of full screen (if I'm using fullscreen) and then seems to mute like it should, but the problem is, it doesn't UNmute when I press it again. The lighted button on the laptop goes back to showing its unmuted, but the game still has no sound. I've tried messing with the sound settings inside the game, and doing all these weird combos of when I mute/unmute and all, nothing seems to help. I usually have to restart the computer to fix it, but then if I use the button again, it does the same thing.
P.S. does anyone know of a way for these buttons to NOT interrupt full screen? I had the same problem with it interrupting fullscreen apps on windows, but then I used a program called 3RVX and it fixed it. Is there anything like this on linux?

Sorry for the lack of a description, but I do not know much about how Linux enables LEDs. I have set the button up in the XFCE keyboard settings to mute, but the LED does not work.

My problem with UBUNTU is that I can not use acer-wmi because I get this ERROR :
Code:
... so I can not use the acer_wmi . But this is not my only Problem :
It is most likely caused of the missing " Firmware " / Driver for my WLAN Card ( Internal ) . Currently I use Ubuntu 10.10 but I tested 10.04 too before 10.10 and it found my Card but not the Button .
So I want to know if there is any solution for my problem .
If it is important :
I use an Acer eMachines e525 with Windows Vista Home Basic ( Pimped up ) and Wubi . I saw a lot of people with simmilar problems they have it as only boot option .

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X60. When I plug either headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack (whether on the docking station or the laptop itself), the laptop speakers aren't muted. I can hear sound coming from both simultaneously. I've tried editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in all kinds of ways, my most recent attempt being to add the line:
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
but still with no success.
I'm using 10.04 with the 2.6.32 kernel. I tried installing the .34 kernel with no better results, so I switched back.

I have a few problems with my sound. First off, I don't know exactly what chip it is, but my laptop is an Acer Aspire 6530 running a fully updated Fedora 13. Sound itself works, but that's about as far as it goes. So, here are my problems:Built-in laptop speakers don't auto-mute/turn off whenever something it plugged into the headphones jack.Microphone doesn't seem to work, both the one next to my webcam as well as any mic attached to the mic jack. The webcam itself works fine.I would be really happy if I could get these issues fixed. I was so impressed that I made Fedora my only OS on my laptop, but fixing a few more things would be even better.

I just installed fedora 12 on my new lenovo laptop sl510 where I have pulseaudio over my alsa. The problem is, when I plugin headphones in 3.5 jack the speakers dont mute which is really irritating. I tried switching from "analog output" to "analog headphones", but what that does it mutes both.

However, there is only one screen present.
It's a Hp 5320m, with a Intel HD graphics.
Here's what the unity test says:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.2

Here is what i see in monitors when i uncheck 'mirrored'

I have been going crazy with this maybe someone can help me out. I realized that in 10.04 my internal mic on my Asus G51VX does not work.
I have already upgraded my ALSA Drivers using the latest 1.0.23, and in alsamixer it shows the iMic and Capture devices correctly, however in sound recorder and in Skype I get nothing but a low hissing sound. I believe this is a pulse audio problem and not ALSA since I didn't have a problem in Kubuntu 9.04 using ALSA which I had previously to this.
In sound config pulseaudio shows that there is only one input and one output device which I figure should read 2 input devices since there is also a mic jack on the laptop. Either way it is really annoying not to have use of the Mic.
Device is INTEL HD AUDIO ALC663
Simple mixer control 'i-Mic',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Mono:
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [off]
When I turn the i-Mic on I can hear the echo of myself coming out the internal speakers but it still won't record anything even with the Capture control on and at full volume.

When I plug in my headphone on the front panel of the computer case, sound output is muted on both: headphone and speakers.
When I unmute it, it plays on both at the same time.
I can't seem to get it working properly. I've seen people with the same problem but never figured how they got it working and it usually depended on their computer brand. Anyone?

I don't want to monitor my inputs. In other words: My microphone input plays through my speakers, adding a lot of undesirable noise from the mic. I can mute the mic inputs in alsamixer and/or in the Pulse volume control. This works to get the mic out of the speakers--but it also mutes my mic entirely, so I cannot record audio or use Google Talk. I want the microphone muted in my output, but available to my apps.
(I try to get on the Pulse bandwagon but it is so hard--I thought this was exactly what it was supposed to do, give easy mixing control over inputs and outputs. But I have to search for "fixes" with every single Ubuntu release for two years now, ever since it was first included. Ok, venting over, time to get it working!)

I've been bashing my head against this problem for weeks now. The problem is that my external speakers are not being muted when I plug in headphones. I get sound through both the speakers and the headphones at the same time. This is happening on every Linux distro I've tried so far on this box, but in Windows everything behaves as expected. I've tried every option I have in both alsamixer and the Gnome sound preferences, to no avail.
Curiously, if I mute any one of the audio channels or toggle the headphone switch in alsamixer, all sound output is muted, to both the speakers and headphones. The audio chipset is a Realtek ALC888, on a Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 motherboard (6 jacks, optical and coaxial S/PDIF out). I must've tried a dozen different models in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, and none of them seem to make any difference at all.

I have issues with my sound board configuration. My speakers don't mute when headphones are plugged in and my mic doesn't work good.
I have being readed all kinds of forums and I found that the main issue is in that maybe the ALSA is not using the correct model.
I tried modifying the archive:
With different kinds of models but I couldn't found the right one. I tried all the Lenovo ones that I found in:[url]
My laptop is a Lenovo G455 and my sound board is an ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
I love Ubuntu but this is bothering me since I upgrade to version 10.10.

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) from Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on my Samsung R580 laptop [URL] So far all my hardware seems to be working except the laptop's integrated camera. In 10.04 the camera worked and I could use the program "Cheese" to take photos and videos with the camera. In 10.10 I installed Cheese and tried to use my laptop's camera but it didn't work. I installed all the available updates for 10.10 but still the camera wouldn't work. The only information about the camera on the laptop's webpage is that it is a 1.3 MP Web Camera.

Settings for the selected device: Analog Stereo Duplex is selected on the dropdown menu.
When I select the Input tab: Input Volume is at 100% the box for Mute is unchecked Connector Analog Microphone/Microphone 1 is selected on the drop down menu for Connector and the device for sound input: Internal Audio Analog Stereo is selected.
How can I configure my microphone to work?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04. I am sure that the internal microphone works because when I reboot into Windows it works fine. It does not work in Ubuntu instead. I tried three things:
1) Action: I checked all the volumes, made sure that the microphone is not muted and selected the proper device as "Analog Stereo Duplex".
Result: no improvements.
2) Action: I installed PulseAudio to better manage the volumes.
Result: no improvements.
3) Action: in the Terminal, I executed the line " sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf " and then added the line " options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba " at the bottom of the page that opened. I saved, closed and rebooted.
Result: no improvements.
I executed in the Terminal the command " wget [URL]. The link to where data were uploaded is [URL].

So, help me through getting my audio working properly on my Toshiba Satellite A105-S2081 Laptop. I think I've been through most of the help messages and tried many things to get it working correctly. The ONLY thing that has helped is to go to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and change model=auto to model=generic. (options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=generic)
I've tried model=toshiba, model=auto, model=lenovo, model=3stack, model=dallas and the laptops internal sound device disappears from the list of sound devices. If I plug in my Logitech Headset, it seems to work fine.It also seems to work fine if I boot it up into XP SP3.It does work now generally with model=generic, but not sure that everything works properly, like the headset & microphone jack. (Actually the reason I have the Logitech Headset is because the headset jack doesn't work).

The only problem I've had so far seems to be a common one but I haven't found a specific solution for a dell inspiron 700m. I have sound through the headphones but not through the laptop internal speakers. I've played with the alsamixer settings endlessly but no success, and I'm 99% sure that it's not an issue with the hardware or speaker wiring. I suspect I need to add an 'options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxx' line to alsa-base but not sure what argument to use.
