Ubuntu Multimedia :: Shut Down With Sound Muted - Now It's Gone

I've seen loads of threads about this sound issue, and I've experienced/fixed it before (after HOURS of searching), but this time it's worse. I'm running Maverick. I accidentally muted my sound and shut down with it muted. Upon restart, no sound is present through headphones, speakers, anything. The sound card still shows up in the options. Sound also has been disabled on my LIVE DISC OF 11.04These sound problems are the absolute worst part of Ubuntu. I'm almost ready to jump ship back to...vista *shudder*
I have two laptops, one has sound muted at start up (karmic), like in this thread , and i like it and in one the sound is not muted and i want it too be (lucid), like in this threadhow do i set to mute on startup (or shutdown to be more precise)?

Every time I hibernate the PC, when i comes back up I have to go into the mixer app to unmute the thing.. I this some sort of "feature"? I hope not.. running xubuntu 11.04..
i can play a dvd or play a film from my hard drive , my media player can playmp3but i just have no sound ..i have made sure nothing is muted ...suse linux 11.2 kde 4.3.5
Right now I either can have wireless or sound. When I get sound I lose my wireless which may be due to some kernel issue. I use the madwifi, madwifi-kmp-default, madwifi-kmp-pae, & compat-wireless-kmp-pae for my athero ar 9285. This gets my wireless going.
I followed SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE and couldn't get sound
Then I followed Alsa-update-snapshot - openSUSE
I get sound but lose my wireless. I reinstall madwifi-kmp-pae, & compat-wireless-kmp-pae. I have to downgrade some kernel conflicts and I have wireless, but no sound. My sound information is here [URL].
Everytime I boot Ubuntu 9.10 system there is no start-up sound. A check of the sound settings under the system/preferences showes the sound muted checkbox is checked. I can uncheck it and listen music, etc. normally the rest of the session but on a reboot it is muted again.
I've been having some issues with my sound for a few weeks. Every time I reboot, my sound is muted. I have to open up alsamixer every time and unmute it manually. It is not the "master volume" that is muted but instead the "speaker" volume is the one that is muted. This started when i started up my computer and the ubuntu log-in sound started playing extremely loud. I quickly tried to turn down the volume while it was still booting and ever since then, i have been having this issue. Also, the volume control on my laptop no longer works, even after i adjust the volume with alsamixer. It still shows on the screen that the volume is being adjusted, but it does nothing. I hoped i explained this well enough for someone to be able to help me with this issue. Also, sorry if this issue has been posted before.
am a web designer trying to go into using Linux. I just installed Ubuntu 11.4. Now I cannot get any sound. I checked the volume at the top right and it is not muted
I've got no sounds from my audio card. I have established this knowledge by confirming it by using two separate sets of speakers. In addition, there is a weird muted icon in the top left corner. I've looked through the sound settings, including alsamixer, and I cannot find whats muted. Please see attached screenshot. As you can see, my output it muted, but the speaker is back (see a) in screenshot), not white like it normally is (see b) in screenshot). How to restore sound from my audio ports?
I am been using Fedora 14 on my HP mini for a few weeks now. Everything was working fine. However, since I have updated my system a few time using yum upgrade. I can no longer get the sound working.
If I go to Menu | multimedia | pulseaudio sound control
All the volumes levels are at 100%. However, the mute button is muted and everything I press it, it remains muted.
Basically every bootup I have to select alsamixer and unmute the speaker channel. OR use the xfce mixer and select the speaker switch, which starts unselected.
The audio of my laptop works well, but the audio is muted on system startup. So, I have to turn it on manualy. I listen much to music, so it's very fustrating.
I've got an asus a8js laptop and since installing karmic, the built in microphone is permanently on. Every once in a while I brush my finger of the mic unintentionally and it makes some mad feedback.
I've ruled out that this is caused by pulseaudio, the problem occurs when pulseaudio is off (pulseaudio --kill) and I've set .asoundrc to go straight through the hardware.
My first thought was to check alsamixer, but I muted (capture, mic, mic boost set to 0) it in there to no avail. Consequently, any time I move a slider (any one, PCM, mic, Front...) the microphone mutes for 3 to 15 seconds and then is suddenly live again.

In all the soundcard works fine, it's just that the mic is always on and I can't seem to set it otherwise.
I have a Dell Vostro 1014 laptop and I just installed Ubuntu 10.04. The problem I'm facing is that the sound output goes to both the built-in speakers and headphone jack.

I've searched through /Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt. But I can only see Conexant models upto 5066.
My only glitch with Ubuntu, which runs flawlessly on this beast, otherwise.I have spent more than 50 hours on this problem. In my case, inserting headphone jack doesn't mute internal speakers. There is sound in the headphone though.alsamixer ot gnome-alsamixer doesn't even show the headphone option. Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista. Machine specifications: Maker: Toshiba Model: Satellite L305D-S5881 AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70 3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue. I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ? Your advise would be highly appreciated.
Whenever I close Banshee by clicking the 'x' in the upper left-hand corner; the player moves to the next track and keeps on playing, just without a GUI. I had this problem in Rhythmbox as well. I'm also having the same problem with Software Center.It certainly looks like the UI/Window Manager is not always sending the application 'kill' signal to the running process. I'm currently using Gnome 2.x / Ubuntu Classic. I haven't tried this in Unity yet; but I suspect I will have the same problems there as well.
I have a syncmaster 171v, 17 inch monitor which is pretty nice, except that it auto-shuts off after every 2 minutes. Only associated drivers I have found at samsung are for magictune which seems to only work for a 'certain' list of video cards. me not having one for my ubuntu machine. When i plug it into my XP machine (which has one of the special cards, (AGP, ugh), it seems to work, but haven't tested out the long duration.
My current fix for the problem right now is taking the power cord out and plugging it back in. All the buttons on the monitor will not respond after the auto shut off of a whole two minutes. Seems i have a pretty useless monitor if it only works for my old XP machine, and im getting really tired of unplugging it and plugging it back in.
After installing 11.04, I have enabled the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I see this (picture of problem is attached) at startup and shutdown. About nine out of 10 times, I cannot get to the log in screen (even in recovery mode); however, on the tenth try, everything works properly and I can even play games, ex. Braid and World of Goo. I get about 3700 fps running glxgears.
I have run nvidia-settings and dpkg and various other things in an attempt to get it sorted out. Additional Drivers says that the "driver is activated but not currently in use." I'm not sure why that is.
It happens mostly when im viewing movies online.... It just closes no error messages no nothing like performing ctrl-Q since no error messages are produced during the crashes ....
I'm running Squeeze with Gnome. Sometimes the buttons in System> Shut Down does not respond to mouse clicks. After rebooting it works again. It seems to be a random problem
I have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. I've recently installed Xubuntu Lucid Beta2 on my new laptop. But I'm unable to turn the bell back on. The 'pcspkr'-module is removed from the blacklist and is loaded. However, 'alsamixer' doesn't show me any volume-options for the beep. However, 'echo -e "a"' still doesn't make a sound. I've installed the 'beep'-package, and it works, thus I am assuming that the hardware-bell itself does WORK fine. It's just deactivated/muted somewhere, and I can't find the option to turn it back on.
I have an Asus 1005PE that I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on. I've set up a hot key to mute/unmute by using the command
amixer sset Master toggle
For some reason it works fine if the computer is booted while not being muted, but if the computer is booted and is muted, the command will not unmute.
I have been using Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktops for a couple of years now. Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.
After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.
I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound.When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using.The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound.However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound.My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device.On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices.The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.
I have no sound, is it possible to restore the default sound drivers/settings in 10.04?It was work well before except for one issue, I couldn't get mic in for Rosetta Stone using wine. I have followed so many howto's to try and get Rosetta Stone working and then my sound working again.I think this is my main problem I upgraded alsa to "alsa-driver-1.0.23".
