Software :: Mute After Upgrading ALSA?
Sep 19, 2010
I didn't (maybe still don't) have ALSA loopback so I could record streaming, so I upgraded ALSA following these instructions:[URL].. The only part I didn't follow verbatim was the final step:
Quote: Allrighty, time to load it. But before that, shut down all audio apps (including firefox). Once done, do this:
Code:
sudo alsa force-unload
sudo modprobe snd-whatever-module-you-need
sudo modprobe snd-aloop
I was unsure about "snd-whatever-module-you-need" so I decided to reboot.
When KDE was just about to kick in, I saw a lot of new text I had never seen before scroll past very, very fast. Then it stopped and I could see it had something to with ALSA, but I couldn't really read anything. KDE started and... now I have no sound. I checked kmixer, it looks normal. It doesn't seem to be mute. I ran alsamixer in the command line, it doesn't seem to be mute either. I ran Kcontrol and checked the audio section, couldn't figure anything out. Here is the output of lsmod BEFORE the upgrade:

My Compaq Presario F700 laptop has Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221 (checking from my Windows partition). I had everything working just fine until yesterday when I attempted to manually install an alsa-linux package that I downloaded sometime ago. Although the .deb package failed to install, it seems it messed things up and now there's no sound. The speaker icon shows "All mute" and I have no clue how to fix this. How do I 'unmute' it?

Hardy Heron includes ALSA 1.0.15 but I need at least 1.0.16 to make VMWare player happy with it. I couldn't find the packages in backports, but maybe I missed it.

System sound works perfectly (ev en Skype is working) I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and Google Chrome browser. flash -> flashplugin-nonfree

I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

I'm trying to update ALSA, following the instructions here: SDB:Alsa-update - openSUSE.I'm not sure how to proceed at STEP THREE. There are two sets of instructions, based on whether or not the kernel has been updated. I'm not sure if it has been. How can I make sure?

I found a curious issue with my new Dell XPS 8100. On my old Inspiron, as soon as I plugged in the headphones they muted the speakers. That's how it should be, because you listen to headphones so you don't blast your music all over the room. But now, on the 8100, the speakers still blast even if the headphones are plugged in. Headphones Also work, so they're getting a clear signal. It's just simultaneously being played in the rear speakers too.

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X60. When I plug either headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack (whether on the docking station or the laptop itself), the laptop speakers aren't muted. I can hear sound coming from both simultaneously. I've tried editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in all kinds of ways, my most recent attempt being to add the line:
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad
but still with no success.
I'm using 10.04 with the 2.6.32 kernel. I tried installing the .34 kernel with no better results, so I switched back.

I usually need to turn on my computer in a library or a classroom and it is kinda embarrassing to cause sound at the startup. Is there anyway to introduce a script to mute the computer before it creates the startup sound?

Is there a way I can mute my laptop from the console. At times I'm in class and want to log in but... I have to make so much noise.
This will help me switch to a (Ctrl+Alt+ n) terminal and save myself from having to make such loud noises.

I think this is a bit of a complicated problem so bear with me while I explain it. I'm using an HP Laptop with Ubuntu 10.10. The laptop has the touch buttons for mute and volume up/down, and I use them all the time (at least when I was on Windows). I've very recently switched to Ubuntu and now those keys are causing problems with a game called Minecraft. Basically, when I'm playing it and use those keys, it brings me out of full screen (if I'm using fullscreen) and then seems to mute like it should, but the problem is, it doesn't UNmute when I press it again. The lighted button on the laptop goes back to showing its unmuted, but the game still has no sound. I've tried messing with the sound settings inside the game, and doing all these weird combos of when I mute/unmute and all, nothing seems to help. I usually have to restart the computer to fix it, but then if I use the button again, it does the same thing.
P.S. does anyone know of a way for these buttons to NOT interrupt full screen? I had the same problem with it interrupting fullscreen apps on windows, but then I used a program called 3RVX and it fixed it. Is there anything like this on linux?

The volume on my computer randomly mutes/unmutes itself rapidly at unpredictable intervals. sometimes it works fine, other times it does not. I cannot find out what the problem is. I have never had this problem until recently, and this problem has surfaced in ubuntu 10.10, 10.04, 64 and 32 bit versions of the operating systems. I have used this hardware setup for a year before this problem ever surfaced. My hardware is installed and working fine, I just cannot figure out why this is happening. Does anyone know of some commands I can use to find out what is causing the volume to mute/unmute itself?

When I plug in my headphone on the front panel of the computer case, sound output is muted on both: headphone and speakers.
When I unmute it, it plays on both at the same time.
I can't seem to get it working properly. I've seen people with the same problem but never figured how they got it working and it usually depended on their computer brand. Anyone?
Might be useful:
lsmod

I installed an Asus P7P55D PRO motherboard and now I can't mute Master channel with alsamixer, even not using KDE mixer. Probably ALSA doesn't support properly, despite I upgraded alsa libraries (alsa-lib-1.0.21a). The key to increase or decrease the volume through keyboard works fine, but the key for mute is not working. These are the alsamixer values:
Card: HDA Intel
Chip: VIA ID 444
I also used alsaconf command and it detects a snd-hda-intel board. I have a G15 keyboard and I even tried to make a shortcut with KDE mixer, but it doesn't work. Is there any way to solve it or have I to wait for a new version of alsa? I use Slackware64 13.0 with kernel 2.6.32.7.

I'm using mplayer with shell-fm, in my shell-fm.rc I have the line
extern = nice -10 mplayer -really-quiet -ao jack -cache 512 -noar -nojoystick -nolirc -noconsolecontrols -nomouseinput -demuxer lavf -lavfdopts format=mp3 -af-adv force=5:list=resample -af resample=44100:1:2:extrastereo-1.5 -
This to me at least produces a pleasant audio output but despite the -really-quiet option mplayer is still outputting text, generally something like
[mp3 @ 0xa3f5380] max_analyze_duration reached
I've also tried the -msglevel all=-1 option and had a play with the MPLAYER_VERBOSE environmental variable, all with no joy.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L650 with a Conexant 5069 sound card, and when I plug in my headphones the built-in speakers don't mute. I already tried adding options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (I also tried auto, toshiba, thinkpad and ideapad). This is the alsactl init output:
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Conexant ID 5069" "HDA:14f15069,1179fd12,00100302" "0x1179" "0xff1e"
Hardware is initialized using a guess method.

I just installed Debian Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 7736ZG and I also got some problems with the Realtek ALC888 onboard-sound. Normally, the speakers should mute themselves when headphones are plugged in, but they don't. Instead I hear sound on both, speakers and headphones.
I already installed pulseaudio, but that didn't help. On Ubuntu Maverick (11.01?) I had the problems that the sound didn't play at all until I installed an alsa-driver which was modified by one of the ubuntu developers. Is there any fix like this for Debian Squeeze, too?
