Hardware :: Kingston SSDnow V Series 64MB Only Supports NTFS?
Sep 20, 2010
I have an old P4 system with a Sil3112a PCI SATA card which works fine for convetional hard drives. I have been testing a Kingston SSD for a couple of weeks now. I have done several tests today with GParted on the Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and the Gparted LiveCD. I can create any number of NTFS partitions of any size and format them as NTFS. The response is quick. Gparted creates and formats NTFS in a couple of seconds.
But try to create a partition with anything other than NTFS or Linux Swap, and it crashes the disk or its controller. Gparted no longer sees the Kingston SSD. Plug it out and in again and hey presto its still alive only to accept many more NTFS partitions, but none ext2 etc.
mke2fs has similar issues. It hangs for a while, then says complete, but its really just times out. The disk is no longer visible. I opened a case with Kingston saying I could not format ext4, and they wanted to know which version of Windows 7 I had. Have they got a secret deal with someone, or are they just releasing 2nd rate products?

I have a problem with the latest Fedora. Installed it cleanly on a machine with Gigabyte H55M-S2 with Intel Core i3. There seems to be no sound and I checked to see if anything is muted but is not. The manual says that the sound chip is ALC888B so this could be the first problem. Any ide how I can make it work? Here is a dump of some things on my system.
Code: [weaz ~]$ lspci | grep Audio

I am running a 32-bit Fedora 11 OS (in GNOME).
My 2GB Kingston Flash Drive is plugged into my hp pavilion dv6000; the light on the flash drive is on but there is no icon on my desktop, and it is also missing from the 'Places' tab.
After typing fdisk -l I receive the following message:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000d7c32
[Code]...
I've plugged in the drive to different USB slots to no avail. I also plugged in my e-reader to see if my USB slots were malfunctioning, but the e-reader was detected by Fedora.
I have plugged the thumb drive into my Windows 7 Desktop PC with the hope of the OS recognizing the drive, but the result is the same as in my laptop.

Fedora 14 is used throughout the whole problem. The problem started when I wanted to install Fedora 15 DVD by making a bootable USB key. The size of the USB stick is 8 GB. The problem happened when I (following the tutorial) wrote the line [URL]... livecd-iso-to-disk command associated with the path to the ISO DVD and the partition on the USB stick. the USB stick has the device name /dev/sdb , 1 partition sdb1.
I then noticed that it was mentioned to unmount the USB drive before doing this command. so, while the terminal had written in it "Checking" , I pressed CTRL+C to stop the execution and then pressed on the arrow beside the device in the computer window (Which I think that it unmounts the device). The actual problem started here. I then tried to mount the device but couldn't, It said the device was not found. so I removed the drive and inserted it again, the OS didn't automount the USB drive, I tried to manually mount it but it said the device is not found or doesn't exist. then I used fdisk -l, It said that the sdb didn't have a valid partition table. Also the size of the device is wrongly reported. It should be 8 GB but it is reported to be 2 TB?!
[code]....
I think the wrong partition table made it think that it has a certain number of sectors which isn't real, that made it think that the device is 2 TB large....

I'm trying to create a bootable install of Ubuntu 10.04 which boots off an 8GB Kingston DataTraveler USB stick. I used the latest Universal USB installer from pendrivelinux to install it, and I used the I386 ISO of Ubuntu 10.04. It successfully installed to the USB stick and I enabled 4GB of persistence. However, when I put it into any machine it gives me the following message:
Mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: No such device (initramfs) Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs I tried redoing it, and redoing it without persistence enabled, but still no luck.

i installed Slackware 13.1 64 bits in a asus laptop and until now everything is running ok. But when i tried to mount a usb pendrive, i just can mount it as root;well, i thought there would be no problem, i will change permissions with chmod and everyone could access, read and write on it the command :
mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /mnt/kingston
and making ls -l the result is :
drwx------ 1 root root 12288 Dec 8 17:20 kingston
so next i wrote (as root):
chmod 777 -R kingston
and the message was "Operation not supported" i tried also changing the ownership permission :
chown molei:users /kingston
drwxrwxrwx 1 molei users 12288 Dec 8 17:20 kingston
so, apparently i would have total access to the kingston directory; the problem is when i try to copy something to the kingston dir, an error msg. appears :
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/kingston/linux_guide.pdf': Permission denied

I used a Kingston 8Gb flash drive as a live usb recently (copied the live iso image over using dd). I am done with the installations and all but seem to have a problem. i cannot format my flash drive. It now shows as a live CD (800 or so mb). Is there a way to fix the partition table back? I guess if i copy a partition table image from some other 8 gb drive that might fix the problem but i dont have any other flash drives. Is there a solution possible or am i stuck with a live usb forever

Reproducible with Firefox 3.6.6 (installed from Ubuntu 10.04 repository), on Dell D620, Ubuntu 10.04 Steps to reproduce:
1) start Firefox from command line "firefox -P"
2) create new Firefox profile on NTFS volume (mounted with NTFS-3g)
3) add NoScript extension (through extension manager Get Add-ons), restart Firefox as suggested
4) extension is not added to Firefox In case at step 2) profile is created on Linux volume, at 4) extension is added to firefox.I'm not 100% sure, but I think this bug is related to Firefox 3.6 update (no problems with Firefox 3.5). I did not make proper investigation, but I have feeling same problem applies to Thunderbird 3.1.This issue does not allow to share Firefox/Thunderbird profile on dual boot machine (Ubuntu/WindowsXP).

I am wondering if anyone knows how to enable NTFS compression using Paragon NTFS 8.1 Enterprise?
The Professional version comes with a utility mkntfs which allows you to set compression as default for all files, but the Enterprise version is apparently meant to be 'fully featured' and support compression, so how do I enable compression on a drive/folder/file?

On a clean install of Arch linux I edited fstab to be like so :
Code:
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Hitachi_HTS543232L9A300_9002555dd84a21024b000000-0:0-part1 /media/EXT ntfs-3g user,rw,uid=mas,gid=users,noauto 0 0
I tried ntfs and ntfs-3g but the result is the same I can mount root but I would like to be able to mount as a user. When I try to mount as a user I get
Code:
Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. Please see more information at [URL] Before installing ntfs-3g I was able to mount as a user but there was no rw permission. Any way to mount an ntfs partition as a user without suid as the message said?

Is there any IRC client that supports VI keys? The ''obvious'' script VimIRC is and has been broken for so long it's not even funny. Do you know any IRC clients on Linux, GUI or Curses, that provides some of that nice vi usability? Or could some of the existing clients be scripted to use? Irssi, XChat, even ERC would do?
