General :: Check Whether PC Supports PCI Express?

Feb 19, 2010

I'm trying to figure out whether my system supports PCI Express without opening up the box. lspci doesn't mention "Express" or "PCI-e" anywhere, but dmesg reports that a "PCI Express Hot Plug Controller Driver" is in use.

Debian :: How To Check If Video Card Supports KMS

Oct 3, 2015

How do you check if a computer's video card will support Kernel Mode Switching BEFORE OS installation?

In this example I have an Acer Aspire AST180-UA381B.

Manufacture website says my video card is: Integrated nVidia MCP61

[URL] ....

Nouveau code list says: NV4C (MCP61) GeForce 6150LE / nForce 400/405, GeForce 6150SE Quadro NVS 210s / nForce 430

[URL] ....

I want to know:

1. How to tell if my graphics card will support KMS before I install the OS?

2. If it does not support KMS which kernel options should be passed to get it to work properly with the nouveau driver?

3. Ultimately I am looking for a tool that should be included in the installation screen that will:

a. identify your hardware: list the hardware detected on the screen
b. highlight with color code any hardware listed that is not supported or poorly supported: in this case graphics drivers
c. perform a quick benchmark test of your hardware: In this case I want the benchmark to tell me what capabilities my graphics card has.
d. automatically recommend and set the best kernel parameters for a successful boot: if the graphics card needs nomodeset or modeset=0 or whatever I want it to do it for me.

Also I started a personal blog about this issue which I intend to compose into guide to assist others with this question. [URL] ....

My goal is to create a boot disc that will automate proper installation of graphics or other hardware for a system BEFORE installation. I would like to see this feature included in the Debian installation screen.

I have installed db2 express-c on Ubuntu 10.04 server using apt-get; the installation is successful but I noticed that libasound2-dev package has been installed along with db2.I don't want this ALSA sound package, when I tried to remove it by "apt-get remove" it was trying to uninstall DB2 as well as there is a dependency. So, how do I remove ALSA package without removing DB2 ?PS: Also, db2 installed X11 packages like libx11-dev, libxproto-core-dev etc., which are also not need for me as it is a sever OS.

Do you know any IRC clients on Linux, GUI or Curses, that provides some of that nice vi usability? Or could some of the existing clients be scripted to use? Irssi, XChat, even ERC would do?

Oct 29, 2010

I would like to replace gvim with vim in the terminal. One of the nice things about gvim is that it is able to display text using italics.

Vim allows setting an ANSI escape code for italics (e[3m), but this does not work in gnome-terminal. Is there a terminal emulator that supports the ANSI escape code for italics?

General :: TagLib: ID3v2.4 No Longer Supports The Frame Type TDAT

Jan 8, 2010

My question concerns NCMPCPP ( the frontend music player ). I installed, configured NCMPCPP a while ago and it worked like a charm.

But yesterday some colours just changed back to the default for some reason. From : Code: http: (double slash) img37 (dot) imageshack (dot) us/img37/1865/firstss.jpg To : Code: http: (double slash) i45 (dot) tinypic (dot) com/24nij34.jpg Going into the preferences of the terminal : Code: http: ( double slash )i46 (dot) tinypic (dot) com/2j26q9z.jpg As you can see, it is using the default colour yellow. I created another profile already, changing those two colours to black and grey, but I don't think this is a good solution.

I checked the error.log file : Code: TagLib: ID3v2.4 no longer supports the frame type TDAT. It will be discarded from the tag. I'm guessing it has something to do with that.

General :: Version Of Fedora That Supports Nvidia Riva Tnt Display Adapter?

Aug 12, 2010

I am running fedora Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 - works fine, but it puts my display adapter in old fashoned simple vga mode.

DISTRIBTION
Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686
Mysql 5.1.47
Apache 2.2.15

CONFIGURATION
1.25 ghz AMD athlon
NVIDIA RIVA TNT display adapter
ECS K7S5a board / chipset
AMD BIOS 07.00T
512 mb main mem
128 kb primary cache
256 2ndary cache
66 mhz bus clock

I use the bios to dual boot between two disks, (1) this op sys and (2)win98se - where I have a driver that fully supports the nvidia.

The disadvantage to my current situation is that there are some programs - eg Evolution - that assume I can see more than you see with this setup - eg the buttons at the bottom of the screen do not appear and i have to do a trial and error tabbing to get what i want. I just downloaded openoffice and i see that it wants 1000x2000 or so. Thus I wont even try to install it unless i can resolve the adapter thing.

I'm very happy with this fedora - use it for software development. But as I become more fond of it, I would like to use it instead of windows - which I can't unless i can see the whole screen

At one point - in response to a suggestion that I download security updates - I did so and got 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686. It was incompatible with my config - put up a screen that looked like a tv test pattern and went into a loop. So I went back to 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.

Networking :: How To Express Range Of Ip Addresses

Sep 22, 2010

I do not currently fully understand relationship between binary numbers and ip addresses and subnet addresses; nor am I asking for an explanation here at LQ, when there are plenty at wikipedia and other places...

Even after reading the wikipedia article on it, I still don't grasp it completely, so I was hoping that someone who grasps it in its entirety could answer a simple question.

How can I express the range of ip addresses from 172.22.22.200 - 172.22.22.230 ?

I was trying to make a rule for iptables that only did nat on that specific range of ips, and when i tried used the "-s" flag followed by 172.22.22.200/11 it always changes to 172.0.0.0/11 in the actual rule that is created and displayed by iptables -t nat -L.

I already have many hosts defined on my network, and rather than going through each one and changing its ipaddress to 172.0.0.#, I was hoping to learn a way to represent them in the iptables rule.

Debian Configuration :: No Sound With ION Tape Express

Dec 21, 2010

I bought the ION Tape Express to convert all my cassette tapes to mp3 on my computer. The software that came on the CD works fine in Virtualbox windows XP. I could be happy with this but would rather use Linux. The problem is Debian Squeeze sees the new USB device but I can't find a program that will record from it. I've tried gnome-sound-recorder, looked at k3b Audacity and several others. It might be because I don't know how to select the usb sound device.

Software :: Dovecot SSL Microsoft Outlook Express?

Nov 26, 2009

When I log in with shell It connects and reads the SSL on port 993. The problem is when I use SSL for the email client it gets the error on the email side and it doesn't work. Out going mail on the postfix works, and also incoming and outgoing on my actual server works. I have one email set up there for testing. I am really confused. This is not a self signed SSL either. I tried to create a dovecot.pem but it won't work. How do I create the dovecot.pem for a non-self signed SSL?

here is the path:

ssl_cert_file = /path/to/mail_domain_com.crt
ssl_key_file = /path/to/private/mail.domain.com.key

It should be:

ssl_cert_file = /path/to/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem
ssl_key_file = /path/to/dovecot/certs/private/dovecot.pem

When I try to use the mkcert.sh it doesn't put the files in the places it should go. I did edit both the mkcert.sh and the dovecot-openssl.cnf.
