how to setup an Active/Active Load Balanced and High Available (If one of the nodes is down the system still runs) MySQL cluster. I have found quite a few howto's but I have some things unclear in my mind. I found a few solutions like this one: [URL] or this: [URK] Those are using two or four MySQL nodes, two Load Balancers to avoid a single point of failure but only one MySQL cluster management server. What happens if the MySQL cluster management fails?
I have also found a "MySQL Master-Master Circular Replication" technique but from what I read, with this option there is a chance that conflicts will arise if node A and node B both insert an auto-incrementing key on the same table.

I have a machine (Asus P4PE + 120GB SATA HDD) which has been running Karmic very successfully for a long time. I recently made the decision to upgrade to Lucid via the Update Manager. The upgrade seemed to go OK - no obvious errors - but the resulting version of Lucid had some weird problems: desktop messed-up, printers wouldnt work any more, etc. So I concluded I had been unlucky - the upgrade had gone wrong and I tried to install Lucid afresh from a CD.
Every time I try this, the install gets to the page to specify partitions but this page is blank. No partitions are visible. The buttons to create a partition, etc. are all greyed-out. I have tried various boot options like removing quiet splash, setting noapic/nolapic, etc. but nothing seems to work. I can happily run Lucid from the CD, no problem. I have also checked I have not got RAID accidentally installed, as mentioned elsewhere on this forum.
I am able to reinstall Karmic so I know theres a filesystem there but the Lucid installer cannot see it. Any suggestions on how to proceed very welcome!
At the moment my only option seems to be to regress to Karmic.

I have just set up my new Acer R3610 Atom/Ion netbook attached to my TV via HDMI. I installed UNR 9.10 and the NVidia restricted driver 185.Unfortunately, the edges of the screen are cropped off and invisible. This is a problem regardless of which display mode I use.
The Windows7 NVidia driver has a configuration option that sets the visible extent of the display. How can I configure UNR to fit the actual space on the screen?

This is my second Ubuntu installation so I am not a pro. I downloaded and installed latest Ubuntu Desktop version (10.04.1 I think). Installation went fine without any problems until rebooting after completion. During shutdown the installation CD was ejected and some error occurred. I had to do a hard shut down in order to restart. Start and login no problem. The problem I have is that there is no Program/status bar visible (where Application, Places and System menues are). I tried to move the mouse around in order to see if menues are outside of screen but it's not.
The only thing I can do is:
- right-click to bring up "Create folder, launcher etc" menu
- press F1 to bring up Help screen
- press power button (on pc) to bring up shut down dialog
I search for some answers here and the only one I found wass SHIFT+F2 to bring som launch bar but that didn't work. Is there something wrong with the installation or am I missing some secret keycombinations to bring up program bar?

I have win 7 installed on my main first hdd and would like to install ubuntu 10.10 on my newly installed second hdd. Problem is that during install when i choose manual partitioning my second hdd is not visible. So it is impossible to choose the disk for installation. Tried to disable first hdd in bios but pc than fails to boot from dvd. Tried the alternate ubuntu cd and second drive even then is invisible. Second hdd is visible in win 7 and fully can be manipulated in 7. Tried to format the drive as fat32, ntfs, linux ext 2 and 3, but same problem. Drives are mounted as 1st hdd is primary master and 2nd hdd is secondary master.

I'm trying to create a bootable install of Ubuntu 10.04 which boots off an 8GB Kingston DataTraveler USB stick. I used the latest Universal USB installer from pendrivelinux to install it, and I used the I386 ISO of Ubuntu 10.04. It successfully installed to the USB stick and I enabled 4GB of persistence. However, when I put it into any machine it gives me the following message:
Mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: No such device (initramfs) Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs I tried redoing it, and redoing it without persistence enabled, but still no luck.

I use dual booting, vista ubuntu 9.10. I have just bought a new 1T external harddisk i have used it on windows to backup some files. Now I want to backup some documents in ubuntu, but the harddisk is not visible, I can't see it, ok I think the term in Linux is that it is not mounted. Is there something else one should do ?

I am running a 32-bit Fedora 11 OS (in GNOME).
My 2GB Kingston Flash Drive is plugged into my hp pavilion dv6000; the light on the flash drive is on but there is no icon on my desktop, and it is also missing from the 'Places' tab.
After typing fdisk -l I receive the following message:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders

I've plugged in the drive to different USB slots to no avail. I also plugged in my e-reader to see if my USB slots were malfunctioning, but the e-reader was detected by Fedora.
I have plugged the thumb drive into my Windows 7 Desktop PC with the hope of the OS recognizing the drive, but the result is the same as in my laptop.

Fedora 14 is used throughout the whole problem. The problem started when I wanted to install Fedora 15 DVD by making a bootable USB key. The size of the USB stick is 8 GB. The problem happened when I (following the tutorial) wrote the line [URL]... livecd-iso-to-disk command associated with the path to the ISO DVD and the partition on the USB stick. the USB stick has the device name /dev/sdb , 1 partition sdb1.
I then noticed that it was mentioned to unmount the USB drive before doing this command. so, while the terminal had written in it "Checking" , I pressed CTRL+C to stop the execution and then pressed on the arrow beside the device in the computer window (Which I think that it unmounts the device). The actual problem started here. I then tried to mount the device but couldn't, It said the device was not found. so I removed the drive and inserted it again, the OS didn't automount the USB drive, I tried to manually mount it but it said the device is not found or doesn't exist. then I used fdisk -l, It said that the sdb didn't have a valid partition table. Also the size of the device is wrongly reported. It should be 8 GB but it is reported to be 2 TB?!
[code]....
I think the wrong partition table made it think that it has a certain number of sectors which isn't real, that made it think that the device is 2 TB large....

I have an old P4 system with a Sil3112a PCI SATA card which works fine for convetional hard drives. I have been testing a Kingston SSD for a couple of weeks now. I have done several tests today with GParted on the Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and the Gparted LiveCD. I can create any number of NTFS partitions of any size and format them as NTFS. The response is quick. Gparted creates and formats NTFS in a couple of seconds.
But try to create a partition with anything other than NTFS or Linux Swap, and it crashes the disk or its controller. Gparted no longer sees the Kingston SSD. Plug it out and in again and hey presto its still alive only to accept many more NTFS partitions, but none ext2 etc.
mke2fs has similar issues. It hangs for a while, then says complete, but its really just times out. The disk is no longer visible. I opened a case with Kingston saying I could not format ext4, and they wanted to know which version of Windows 7 I had. Have they got a secret deal with someone, or are they just releasing 2nd rate products?

I am trying to replace an existing ubuntu installation with the current debian testing release. But when it comes to select partitions to install on none of the existing partitions is visible. I only see my SATA hard drive empty. The existing installation of Windows is still bootable and fdisk as well as cfdisk correctly recognize the partition table while parted (which I assume is used by the installation process; all tools run from a live cd) is not:
[root@localhost liveuser]# cfdisk /dev/sda
cfdisk (util-linux-ng 2.18)
Disk Drive: /dev/sda
Size: 160041885696 bytes, 160.0 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 19457 .....
[root@localhost liveuser]# parted /dev/sda unit s print
Error: Can't have overlapping partitions.
I am not sure what parted's error message means. I can hardly imagine that it complains about the logical partitions with in the extended one. The reasons for the trouble might come frome the fact that sda4 is marked as primary partition (see cfdisk output). If this is the case, how can I repair this?

i installed Slackware 13.1 64 bits in a asus laptop and until now everything is running ok. But when i tried to mount a usb pendrive, i just can mount it as root;well, i thought there would be no problem, i will change permissions with chmod and everyone could access, read and write on it the command :
mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /mnt/kingston
and making ls -l the result is :
drwx------ 1 root root 12288 Dec 8 17:20 kingston
so next i wrote (as root):
chmod 777 -R kingston
and the message was "Operation not supported" i tried also changing the ownership permission :
chown molei:users /kingston
drwxrwxrwx 1 molei users 12288 Dec 8 17:20 kingston
so, apparently i would have total access to the kingston directory; the problem is when i try to copy something to the kingston dir, an error msg. appears :
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/kingston/linux_guide.pdf': Permission denied

I used a Kingston 8Gb flash drive as a live usb recently (copied the live iso image over using dd). I am done with the installations and all but seem to have a problem. i cannot format my flash drive. It now shows as a live CD (800 or so mb). Is there a way to fix the partition table back? I guess if i copy a partition table image from some other 8 gb drive that might fix the problem but i dont have any other flash drives. Is there a solution possible or am i stuck with a live usb forever

I have a problem after installing Debian and running it on my machine. Instead of taking me to a splash login screen, it instead remains a black screen like a console where I type in my username and password, and it remains in this black command line mode beginning ben@ben-desktop:~$. Like it does in a terminal. What can I do to resolve this? This is completely new to me and hasn't happened to me in Ubuntu or Mint. I am familiar with using the terminal for the odd task but obviously I can't use it like this without a visible desktop.

Debian 8.1
Kernel 3.2.0

I own a secondary SATA disk I used without problems. In the last days I updated to 8.1 and after that I was not able to read the disk. The fdisk -l command has the output:
Code: Select allDevice   Boot Start    End  Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1Â *Â Â Â Â 63 117194174 117194112 55,9GÂ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
Disk /dev/sdb: 37,3 GiB, 40020664320 bytes, 78165360 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x00087e23
The disk is mounted on:
Code: Select all/dev/sdc1 on /media/stefano/MobileSata type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096,uhelper=udisks2)
When i access to the disk, i always have the error:
Code: Select allstefano@GhilbaDebian:~$ ls -l /media/stefano/MobileSata
ls: impossibile to access to /media/stefano/MobileSata: input/output error
In the dmesg there is no particular message.

I decided to have my laptop with dual boot. Already having Win7, I tried installing Ubuntu on another partition. While installation was in progress, during the step where we manually choose partitions to install ubuntu on, I was asked to provide a swap area for ease of operation. I provided another active partition for this supposing that this "swap area" is needed only during the installation. Unfortunately, as I found out later that this makes that important active partition to be unavailable to work upon both in windows as well as Ubuntu. I need to use this partition again.
I tried the "disc utility" in System--->Administration section to change the partition type to "hpfs/ntfs". After a longtime it showed me error (Unable to perform the operation). What could have gone wrong? I absolutely need that drive back, as it contains valuable media files.
