View 1 Replies View RelatedI work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode). Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
I'm planning to install Ubuntu on a new PC and use an external dial-up modem for internet connection. The modem I plan to use is the US Robotics USR5637 56K USB Faxmodem, which USR claims is compatible w/Linux kernel 2.4.20:
[code]...
In the modem's Installation Guide, it says: "You need a USB modem driver (CDC ACM) compiled into a Linux kernel 2.4.20 or higher or as a loadable module for your kernel. Installation of the modem under these kernels is fully automatic provided your kernel has the Plug and Play module enabled (default)." So...uh...does Ubuntu meet these specs? Are some version #s of Ubuntu, or its variants, different with regard to these specs? I have the CD of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition--is this one OK? Should I try a later or earlier version? I'm really looking for a version that will be the least hassle to set up and use; I'll probably have to use Wine, so I can use MS Word 2000. Is there a Ubuntu version best for this too?
Friend's laptop:NEC Versa E20001500 Mhz processor256 memoryDick Smith Electronics external serial modemDick Smith USB to serial adaptorIt had a Windows failure which couldn't be recovered, so I'm putting Linux onto it for her, probably Pclinuxos Gnome, or maybe Suse 11.2 Gnome. Both recommended to me by a Linux user friend for this machine.

I copied
wvdial & dependencies:

How do I get them to /var/cache/apt/archives? I tried to copy and drag&drop wont work.
Is it better to use a Usb to Serial Adapter Cable or a PCI Serial Port Card when attaching a serial port modem to a computer that doesn't provide onboard serial ports?I am leaning toward the USB to Serial Cable but do they work as well as a Serial Port Card? I have a US Robotics business class external serial modem that that I'd like to keep using for dialup internet connections. Here are the devices I am thinking of using:
USB To Serial Cable: KINAMAX CB-RS232 (Prolific Chipset)
PCI Adapter Card: SYBA SD-PCI 15024 --single port chipset=SB16C1052PC1
After >15-yrs using MSWindows, I'm getting a new PC with Ubuntu as my OS. This is for typical home use--net access, web browsing+email, office suite apps.

I've read and bookmarked various info on configuring modem, including PPP and wvdial info. But one question: Is there a particular version # of Ubuntu best for external dial-up modem use? I have the CD for 9.10 Desktop edition. It seems that different Ubuntu versions include some things, others not. Another Q: Reading this page about wvdial, it refers only to serial modems. Does the info apply to USB modems, like the USRobotics 5637? [URL]

(previous: tried to get started with an Option Icon 550 modem, but could not do it. Ubuntu froze completely, networkmanager refused to see the modem after this. Read somewhere that it is (next to) impossible with Ubuntu, but Huawei is a better chance. Maybe I changed some settings on the way, went and got a Huawei)
-connected modem, nothing happened
-rebooted to Windows Vista, installed modem
-rebooted to Ubuntu networkmanager sees the modem, when I select it, it gives a message 'GSM network, disconnected'

I have 4 servers with RedHat Enterprise server 32-bit installed. i'm trying to install 64-bit system instead but the hardware has only CD drive (not DVD). When i tried to use external DVD drive and connect it to the USB to install the 64-bit system, it starts ok but then it ask for the media and give me 4 options (Internal CDROM, Internal Harddrive, FTP, NFS). Now i'm stuck with the DVD that system can't read it and i don't have RedHat on CDs and i'm unable to install the 64-bit system.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 to an external HDD. The install went off without any problems or errors and the external HDD boots no problem on many different computers. Ubuntu runs great except for one problem. After I put the computer into sleep/standby mode it doesn't come out of standby mode properly. On some machines I get a black screen and a cursor on others I get some error messages. I then have to force a shut down and reboot. There is no problem going into standby or doing a regular shut down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have not seen a clear cut or concise way to do this. I have copied my Linux system (Debian Lenny) from my internal hdd(hda) to a 160 GB external hdd(sda) hooked up through USB. I want to be able to boot from this external hdd. The system BIOS will allow ... supposedly ... booting from a USB device. I am using LILO with the internal and would rather continue using it. I don't know if it is installed correctly on the external. I seem to doubt it.Can anybody tell me where to look for more info? Or perhaps enlighten me on how to install LILO into the MBR of an external USB hdd.
Any other tips would be great as to how to boot my Linux system off of the external
