I am trying to configure my ADSL modem/router. According to the manual it should go as this: For the initial connection to the Internet and configuration of your router, you need to connect a computer to the router which is set to automatically get its TCP/IP configuration from the router via DHCP.

I got a new dsl modem/router today and now for some reason I can't login into an ssh session using putty and windows using the hostname of the debian box. I can login using the ip though. Also, it seems I can still access the debian box via samba/windows explorer using the host name.

I'm planning to install Ubuntu on a new PC and use an external dial-up modem for internet connection. The modem I plan to use is the US Robotics USR5637 56K USB Faxmodem, which USR claims is compatible w/Linux kernel 2.4.20:
[code]...
In the modem's Installation Guide, it says: "You need a USB modem driver (CDC ACM) compiled into a Linux kernel 2.4.20 or higher or as a loadable module for your kernel. Installation of the modem under these kernels is fully automatic provided your kernel has the Plug and Play module enabled (default)." So...uh...does Ubuntu meet these specs? Are some version #s of Ubuntu, or its variants, different with regard to these specs? I have the CD of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition--is this one OK? Should I try a later or earlier version? I'm really looking for a version that will be the least hassle to set up and use; I'll probably have to use Wine, so I can use MS Word 2000. Is there a Ubuntu version best for this too?

I'm new to ubuntu. I'm trying to get my US Robotics external serial modem working so I can use Ubuntu.
I copied
wvdial & dependencies:
libuniconf4.6
libwvstreams4.6-extras
libwvstreams4.6-base
to a flash drive.
How do I get them to /var/cache/apt/archives? I tried to copy and drag&drop wont work.

After >15-yrs using MSWindows, I'm getting a new PC with Ubuntu as my OS. This is for typical home use--net access, web browsing+email, office suite apps.
[code]....
I've read and bookmarked various info on configuring modem, including PPP and wvdial info. But one question: Is there a particular version # of Ubuntu best for external dial-up modem use? I have the CD for 9.10 Desktop edition. It seems that different Ubuntu versions include some things, others not. Another Q: Reading this page about wvdial, it refers only to serial modems. Does the info apply to USB modems, like the USRobotics 5637? [URL]

Is it better to use a Usb to Serial Adapter Cable or a PCI Serial Port Card when attaching a serial port modem to a computer that doesn't provide onboard serial ports?I am leaning toward the USB to Serial Cable but do they work as well as a Serial Port Card? I have a US Robotics business class external serial modem that that I'd like to keep using for dialup internet connections. Here are the devices I am thinking of using:
USB To Serial Cable: KINAMAX CB-RS232 (Prolific Chipset)
PCI Adapter Card: SYBA SD-PCI 15024 --single port chipset=SB16C1052PC1

I have Mandrake 7.1 installed on a laptop and I have several problems that an upgrade would likely fix or provide a path that will support a fix. The Mousepad is irratic and the PCMCIA WiFi and Ethernet cards are not recognized. What's a good way to upgrade? (I can access the network from an external modem and from a dual-boot Windows 98 WiFi)

find and install modem driver for the Alcatel X200 USB modem?
I've been all over the internet trying to locate Linux drivers but no success. Alcatel's website says is not supported, only in Windows. I'm sure there's gotta be a way to use the X200 in Linux.

I have this USB modem P300U(SIM600 chip based) which works fine under wind@ws because it has it's own driver, but the clever seller told me that it worked under Linux as well. It was with Redhat 8 but I couldn't get redhat 8 to download. And until now absolutely false.
I have Debian with Kernel 2.6.32-5-686 I just want to send sms through this modem. It's not recognized as modem I'm frustrated because it's not useful for me if it doesn't work on Linux I looked for info but I can't make it work. What I get in my debian is:
lsusb: Bus 002 Device 003: ID 10c4:ea60 Cygnal Integrated Products, Inc. CP210x Composite Device
dmesg: 9857.011649] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3

I have a Centos 5.4 server running kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5PAE. It has an internal modem, and I need to be able to issue AT commands from a script to the modem. I need to simply dial a number and hang up. The relevant piece of my script is:
[Code]...
With an external modem, this works no problem. With an INTERNAL modem, the call never goes out. I fired up minicom to make sure the modem was working correctly, and if I issue those AT commands from within minicom, everything works great.
While minicom was running, I noticed a peculiar fact: WHILE minicom is running, the script works from the command line, and I can see all the AT commands and OK's in minicom, (minicom acts as a monitor). When I exit minicom, the script stops working. It appears minicom is creating a bridge between the com port and the modem itself. So, what is minicom doing that I'm unaware of?
The server's sole function is to run asterisk as a voicemail server (avaya wanted well into 6 figure territory to implement this....). This script is to dial an avaya FAC to turn the voicemail message lights on and off on the end users' phones.

I had installed Ubuntu Studio to check it out alongside my normal KDE system, and have decided to remove it. Problem is, having installed GNOME, I also got programs and libraries I no longer want or need alongside my existing KDE ones (ex. File Roller and Ark, I don't really need both, so I removed FR; I've removed other such programs I know about, as well). But I don't know all the programs or libraries that are still on here; in my package manager with a filter set for only installed programs I see a lot when I search 'gnome', but I'm wary of uninstalling things when I don't know what they do or if they're being used (I do have GNOME applications; I prefer Pidgin so I chose that over Kopete, for instance).
I ran apt-get uninstall ubuntustudio-desktop but despite the install process taking about 20 minutes it removed it in about 20 seconds...and seeing all these programs weren't removed along with it, I can see why. Is there a way I can remove all these things? They're taking up room and I'm not using them. I already did apt-get autoremove, as well. Anything else I can do to find and remove these programs besides reading through every single entry in my package manager's list of installed programs?

I am having problems installing Java runtime on karmic. The problem is: jre depends on the bin, and the bin depends on the jre package... Anyway to solve that? Should I try forcing? I can't get Ubuntu to connect to the internet, so I downloaded the deb packages and put them on a USB stick.

I am having difficulties to mount my NAS (zyxel nsa210) on startup. After some online research, i stumbled upon the "solution".I was advised to write an entry into the fstab-file and that's what i did.And this actually worked like a charm and i was then able to find NAS in "Places". (Not on my desktop since i disabled it). BUT this works not after booting up...meaning there is nothing like NAS in "Places" and i have to mount it manually by using the "sudo mount -a"-command...there is nothing automatic about this solution...So now my question for everyone capable of answering me: "Where did i go wrong? i have installed smbfs and the folder where the NAS should be mounted in actually exists, so the usual suspects should be ruled out i guess

I need to rebuild a kernel module and I'd like the module to be compatible with the ubuntu distributed kernel.I tried something along these lines:
* get the sources via: apt-get source linux-image-2.6.35-24-generic
* cd to the unpacked (and patched, I believe) directory: cd linux-2.6.35
* take kernel config that I'm currently running (I'm running 2.6.35-24-generic): cp /boot/config-2.6.35-24-generic .config
* build the module I care about: make drivers/usb/class/usblp.ko
The module is built, but when I try to load it, insmod fails and I see this in dmesg: usblp: no symbol version for module_layoutI tried to generate the kernel config via debian/rules genconfigs, which resulted in the same config file (with the exception of the local version string). I tried building some other modules and loading them, but I always get that error on loading.
