I have an old computer that I want to turn in to a backup server. I was planning on using a 1 TB drive connected by a SATA card since the motherboard only has PATA. However when looking everything I've found makes it sound like I need to install the card for it to work. I want to know if I can install Debian to the hard drive through the SATA card or not?
View 6 RepliesI've got Vista installed on my notebook and I've bought an external drive (1,5 TB, but its size shouldn't matter in this case) and after formatting it I left 10 gigs for future purpose. Now, I decided to install 64bit debian on the unallocated 10 gigs. And so I did. To be precise: I have SATA drive inside my lap and hard drive (it's also SATA inside the cover) connected to my lap through USB. Boot sequence was 1)CD/DVD 2)hard drive 3)removable drive. During the installation the installer detected my internal drive as /dev/sda and my external drive as /dev/sdb. I decided to install grub on /dev/sdb (it was logical to me, since I didn't want to mess up my regular drive's MBR). Installer created 5 partitions on my USB drive. After booting from my external drive (look below*) I've got a message saying

error: no such partition Entering rescue mode... and after that I was in grub rescue console. When I typed ls I've got an output

error: unknown filesystem This occured for all the listed devices... On my internal drive there were (during the installation and running the live cd) 3 partitions detected (vista os, data, rescue disk) so I don't understand the output that ls in rescue console gave me. about booting from external drive: I did that after pressing ESC - I've got a prompt to choose which device I want to boot from - this wasn't working properly; after changing the boot sequence the grub started but with the abovementioned error message...
If there's any info about exact names/types/devices of my installed partitions needed I will run live CD and check it. If any other info is required I will provide it (I tried to describe the problem in the most precise way ) What I was thinking about: maybe there is a problem with ordering of the devices - when I boot from DVD my removable disk is treated as the "second one" and after booting from the removable disk it becames the "first one" or something like that? If any of you have any good info on how mapping of the device names works it would be appreciated, since I couldn't find anything useful or I just don't know what to ask google about.
1) How to install Debian on a removable disk (I had no problems with installing Linux on pendrive but I did that from VirtualBox and it was some time ago) OR how to install GRUB on a removable disk? (unfortunately, I cannot install 64bit system through VirtualBox)
2) What's the logic behind naming devices under /dev? How come the devices in grub have their names mapped as hdx etc and I've read that hdx are the names for IDE/ATA drives and sdx is the proper name for a SATA or USB device
I tried to load Red Hat Linux 4 on my PC, which has 945 MB, Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB SATA HDD. But i couldnt do so as it did not detect the hard drive and was asking for drivers. I changed the SATA settings to Legacy but still it didnt recognise the HDD...I have Windows XP SP3 also installed on it.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install Ubuntu on my main computer for some time. I think I have two problems: my hard drive and video card. I started with Ubuntu 9.04 but got nowhere. I am now trying Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit. I can at least use the live cd if I put the video on safe mode. Just in case you are wondering, I have tried other distros: Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slitaz, Wolvix, etc. Only Slitaz and Ubuntu 9.10 works on a live cd.
Information on my computer:
OS: Trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 32bit
Motherboard: ASUS M3A78
CPU: AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core
Video Card: Galaxy Geforce 9500 GT 1GB 128 bit DDR2 (Nvidia) Hard Drive: Hitachi 1 TB Sata Drive 3 Gb/sec 7200 RPM Ram: 4 GB (I think, its been awhile since I built this thing) DVD Burner: LG I think I have two problems: the Sata Hard Drive and the Video Card. When I go to install it, I can get to the install menu but from there all I get is a blank screen. I have tried to put the video in safe mode then install it but I get the same result: a blank screen.
How do I know if Ubuntu recognize the Hard Drive and Video Card? I tried the mount command to see what it sees but I didn't notice any Sata Drives. I was told that I may have to do something with the kernel so it will recognize my Hard Drive. How would I do that?
I have been working on this for awhile now. On a side note, does it matter which Sata Plug the hard drive is on? Right now I have it on the 1st one but I would like to move it to the second one because I want a dual boot system. And yes I know I can use the same hard drive but I would like to keep them separated and use a switch to pick which OS system to use.
While running on the Live Cd, Ubuntu seems to know about my video card and ask to install some drivers but then it asked to be rebooted and it came back up not recognizing anything; video card and hard drive that is. On the live cd I ran the following commands: lswh, lspci, mount, and df. I am not too sure if they will show if the hard drive and the video card are working since I did them on the Live CD. Also on the lspci command, I did this after Ubuntu loaded the driver for the card.

For some reason, it loaded the grub off of an SD card (He was running Xubuntu), so I tried re-installing Ubuntu itself on the hard-drive, completely ignoring the SD card. It wont work. The guy who sold the laptop to me took a look at it, and he's alright with Linux, but he can't figure out what's wrong with it. I tried adding my own partition tables, and they look something like this:
sda1 / 20G
sda2 /home 130G
sda3 SWAP 10G
I know it's more swap than I should have, but I plan on upgrading the RAM.Anyways, we're both completely lost. I think we want it to load a grub menu at this point because one isn't loading.
Having an issue I've been unable to resolve for for a week now. I've 2 drives, SATA1 for OS and operating files, SATA2 for media storage. came home last week to an update manager window present and error in Transmission stating unable to second drive due to "Read Only" status. the drive was never set to read only status but following the update manager a reboot was needed. once rebooted, the GRUB menu came up (dual boot system), selected Ubuntu then booting stopped. blank black screen with blinking cursor. rebooted several times, checked bios recognition of both drives, replaced cables, switched power to drive to separate cables, used different SATA ports but nothing worked. finally removed the second media storage drive and Ubuntu booted normally. now any time i connect the second drive and reboot it fails to boot into ubuntu or XP. i removed the media drive and installed it in another computer and it worked normally. have searched everything i can but no answers have been found so far. wondering if anyone here has had similar trouble or has idea for what to try.

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 9.10 on my new computer, on a separate hard drive, and create a dual boot Linux and XP.
I already own another 500GB HDD but this one is IDE. I would like to install Ubuntu on this one. The other two are SATA. The second one is used only to mirror the first one and protect me from a single drive failure.
I hooked up my IDE drive to IDE controller and connected the power cable. However, BIOS doesn't show recognize this drive; it is not visible in Windows explorer, or in disk management either. The jumper is on cable select (so I thought motherboard will decided on boot order, and as the first drive is SATA, it will boot first which is fine).
I double checked all cable connections and tried again, and there was no change. The drive (WD Caviar Blue PATA 500GB) is not registered.
Can SATA 3 (SATA III) Hard disk be run on motherboard which only supports SATA II, except sacrificing the speed (throughput)?

I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.
*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence

I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.
It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...
I purchased a new Sata Card today so I can install multiple harddrives on my system, but It appears as though I am missing the drivers for the card, because it is simply not recognizing it. how to obtain drivers for these cards and install them?
Edit - Just in case you were wondering, the Sata Card is Generic, and I have no idea who the manufacturer is. It literally says 'Sata Card' on the box and has no company information, but I did buy it at a reputable business, so I have no doubt that it should work fine. I have a number of drives that I am setting up for friends who wish to switch/alternate from Windoze. So far several completed. One particular drive is being a bit difficult. When installed on the Mobo as main drive and machine booted set to boot from HD it sometimes reports 'No Drive Found' Reset the BIOS to boot from CD and Load Ubuntu from DVD- it goes through load routine then reports 'Error- cannot Mount drive[or words to that effect] Tried installing frm CD/DVD drive to the disk via the SATA/USB wire But that failed also with CD Auto load error So the disk seems to need setting up in some way to suit Linux presumably just like FDisk in Dos/Windoze
Dear OpenSUSE experts: I am a dual boot computer: Win 7 64 bit and OpenSUSE 11.2 64 bit. This computer has 3 hard drives: SSD, 500GB sata II, 1 TB sata 3. SSD contains openSUSE 11.2 500GB sata II contains Win 7.
Win 7 sees the 500GB sata II drive and the 1 TB sata 3 drive. openSUSE sees the SSD drive and the 500GB windows drive. The Motherboard BIOS sees all 3 hard drives. Is it openSUSE not support sata 3 drive? Or do I have to install special driver for it to see it in OpenSUSE?
I have 4 hard drives in my computer. 1 for may root and home partitions. 2 extras for storage and 1 for Windows. I have the hard drive with my root and home partitions set as the first hard drive in the bios. However, in the Ubuntu setup it isn't the first one in the list. I would have thought that the first drive would be get set to sda. That is not the case.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have REHL 6 Desktop. I have a macbook pro 7,1 with nvidia graphics and (I believe)a nvidia sata controller. I have fedora currently installed with no problems during or after installation ( with a few drivers of of course).
When I boot with the disk i burned ( works on other computers) it comes up of a list of devices to select and when i select local CDROM or DVD it goes to select drivers. So, then I tried "burning" the installation files to an external hard drive then I used the DVD to boot and selected Hard Disk then selected SDB1 (path of external HD). With this method I get to the Graphic installation screen and can go to the part were it says custom partitioning. I select ok then it say the only disk that is available is SDB1 (EXTERNAL).
I had put a second Sata hard drive in my computer and was pleasantly surprised not to run into any problems. No BIOS changes, just start the partitioner, partition, mount, it worked.And then... my computer didn't boot today.I disconnected the new hard drive and it went a little bit further, allowing me to log in as root and remove some lines in /etc/fstab. After that, it booted without any issues.I then remembered that the new drive was /dev/sda and the old drive /dev/sdb. I assume this is the reason for not booting, there is no GRUB on /dev/sda. How do I fix this? Can I simply plug in the cable for the new drive where the cable for the old drive was?

So i cannot boot.I tryed rescuecd, does not work either.i tryed many kernel params to disable sata at boot but it seems to be builtin.there is no option in the bios to disable the hard drive.

It can't find the Hard drive which is on the chipset's SATA controller.However, I can install 9.04 just fine. I recognize the obvious need to back up the contents and follow a certain duty of care before attempting to clone my failing pata 250g HD to a 1 tera byte sata. What problems if any could come up when cloning from a failing pata to a sata HD? I'd like to make the switch to sata for many reasons if possible. It is indicated that the HP d530 sff here supports both types.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get my work's infrastructure built at home before I go up there and show the boss. It is as follows: VMware esxi installed on the server with:
Windows server 2008
Ubuntu 10.04 server
I've got VMware installed. And I have spent the past 7 hours trying to figure out how to manage it. I found out that vsphere has not nor will ever be supported for Linux; which was my first problem.
Second Problem So I had to dig around for a spare Windows 7 dvd. To my UN-surprise it blue screened before it even got to the Windows installer.
Third Problem So I dug around for my Windows XP disc. Wouldn't find my sata hard drive and I wasn't about to dig around for a floppy drive and disk, in order to install it.
Fourth Problem I remembered that I had a dual boot of Windows 7 downstairs and proceeded to download and install vsphere. It wouldn't install because of some updates that needed to be installed. I installed them and got vsphere installed as well. However upon connecting to my vmware esxi, there was yet another error that had to do with some update. I found out that the error had been existent since 2009 and for some reason NO ONE at VMware has fixed it....
