1. How sum of system time and user time can be greater than real time ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to edit the system time as a not-root user. I am carrying out the following actions in my program.
1. Read the User Id of the process. User_ID= getuid()
2. Printing Capabilities(Permitted, Efffective, Inheritable)of the process
3. Setting UID = 0, using setuid(0)
4. Calling the prctl(), function to keep capabilities
5.Switching the UID from root to User_ID of the process
6. What we have now is a process with root capabilities as a non root user
7. On printing Permitted, Effective, Inheritable capabilities, I get the following
--> Permitted = 0xfffffeff = Effective
Inheritable = 0x0; with UID = 1001;
8. I then try and set the system time with --> system("date -s 10:00");
9. I get an error: date: cannot set date: Operation not permitted
10. I am unable to understand as to why I cannot set the time even thought the capability bit CAP_SYS_TIME in the Permitted and Effective sets are SET.
I want to get the time from power on system to showing user login view in Linux, how to do? Can it work only with shell?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was just testing specifying limit on file size to a user and have added the following to /etc/security/limits.conf bob soft fsize 100 This basically should have said not to allow bob to create anyfile greater than 100Kb in size.
But the interesting thing is, if bob already has any file which is greater than 100Kb in size, it even doesn't allow to log him into the system both from console and SSH. Also nothing is logged in logs.. How do I configure it so that, bob can login to the system even though he has any file greater than 100Kb (but doesn't allow him to create file which are greater than 100Kb) ??
I have developed an application, in C language, that should received the EPOCH time (6 bytes) at about every 30 min. What function should I use as a non root user to modify the System Time.? The idea is that the same application could update the System Time. I am using Ubuntu.

Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?

Five months ago, there was about 3.9GB free space of root, but now it is only 1.6GB. I always run sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean every time the update is finished, and also use Bleachbit to clean the system, but both are useless.
I never faced such problem with older versions of Ubuntu, is there any measure to fix it?
I'm getting an error when I try and zip a large file on Linux because it is too large for zip to deal with. what commands I can use to get around this?
This is the error I'm getting:
zip error: Entry too big to split, read, or write (file exceeds Zip's 4GB uncompressed size limit)
It is a simple text file, log file in fact.

Similarly it seems there are normal groups and system groups. Doing an internet search and reading man pages does not give much information on the whole concept of system and regular user/group.

2. The total content of /var/log is only 167.6 MB, that won't be a problem.

We added 2 2TB drives in a striped array. What I'd like to do is find all directories totaling 10GB+ on the mirrored array and move them over to the striped array to increase storage on the mirrored array for smaller, more important data. I'm using Fedora 13 , wireless card:Intel 512AN_MMW kernel version:2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686 below is my problem: when i finished install F13,i can use Wireless card surfing internet i have multiple ap's , and if the ap set with same ssid and different channel, i can roaming between ap's if i'm accessing the internet ,
otherwise, it won't change to greater signal ap if i'm not using the internet , does this condition normally ?
The other question is , if i'm using different ssid , like "wlan01" "wlan02", can i roaming between this two ap's automatically?
I have an Apple Aluminium keyboard. To the left of 1 key I have the less/greater (< >) key, not grave/tilde (` ~). xmodmap does not work for me: layout switching (done with setxkbmap) resets my xmodmap changes. .Xmodmap file does not help either. How do I remap the tilde key?

Okay so I am a total newb to linux. I installed Ubuntu using Wubi and am trying to figure out how to get my wireless connection working. It occurred to me I may not have the right driver for use with Ubuntu for the wireless connection at my house. I couldn't find anything on the web to help..it appears I have a realtek RTL8102E wireless card in my laptop. I have absolutely no idea how to resolve this situation..I've looked on the web, but everythings pretty confusing. If I could get the wireless working it would be a good first step.

I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? But I don't want to use the `date +FORMAT' to do that, neither `alias date='date +FORMAT''. I just want a simple `date' to show time in 12hr format.Is there any configuration file about the 12/24 hr format? Is the format related to the value of the environment variable 'TIMEFORMAT'? View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

I have a desktop PC with Fedora, Ubuntu and Windows installed and grub used for multibooting. But time in Fedora is always 5 hours behind. If I change the time in Fedora, then Windows and Ubuntu will be 5 hours ahead of the current time. I don't understand how to fix it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a machine that experienced some troubles with some of the real time stuff that I'm running. One lead that I have is that NTP daemon may have moved the time, causing false timeouts.
How do I find out if NTP daemon did indeed move time at all? Any logs? I do see NTP daemon restart in /var/log/messages, but I don't know if time adjustment should be there as well. to clarify: I need to understand it from the logs, after the event. May be 2 days after the time was adjusted. Running commands to see the current status doesn't help.
I need to change my hardware time and date as my hardware time don't right but I don't have network. I need the the commands and the steps.
