General :: Using Firefox 4.01 On GNU/Linux X86_64 \ Autoupdate From 4 To 5?
Jun 22, 2011
I am using Firefox 4.01 on GNU/Linux x86_64. Is there any reason why there is no autoupdate? In fact, when I look at the "About Firefox" dialog, it just says "Updates available at [URL]

Attempting to compile an application that is not located in any of the repos yet for 11.3 64 bit. I have downloaded the appropriate src and untarred it. However, when I attempt to run the ./configure command here is the error I receive. checking build system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-': machine `x86_64-unknown-linux' not recognized configure: error: /bin/sh ./config.sub x86_64-unknown-linux- failed
I have made sure that I have all kernel-headers packages installed and am unsure as how to proceed. I tried using the command "./configure --build=x86_64" and then receive an error stating that the "SYSTEM IS NOT SUPPORTED" and continued errors stating that gcc is not installed, eve though it is.

In Iceweasel, WhatsApp does not properly work, because you can't download images. Oddly, that doesn't happen on Firefox, so I'm considering using it.
As Firefox is not in the repos, I downloaded the tar.bz2 file from Mozilla and uncompressed it at my home. What I don't know is, what will happen when a new version is released? It has the option to autoupdate enabled but... will it be able to do so without root privileges?

I just installed nVidia GT440 w/ NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run driver on my Scientific Linux on two of my workstation and one of workstation sound disappeared. Both workstations are identical though in terms of hardware and OS (Scientific Linux).
I'm not really sure where to look, but here is dmesg from workstation where sound isn't working:[URL]..whenever I go to System -> Preference -> Sound -> Output on broken workstation I only see "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)" and my old/onboard sound card is missing.
I actually did roll out of same Video Card to more then just 2 workstation, I did that to a 5. Only 2 of them sound working as expected. 1 of them didn't even needed to install nVidia drivers but that workstation running slightly newer OS version 6.1 instead of rest 6.0, so I'm back to where I started it ... clueless ;(

I am unable to get audio from flash videos on sites like ...... When I run firefox from the command line I get the following output.
> firefox
*** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable).
ALSA lib conf.c:3009snd_config_update_r) Cannot access file /etc/alsa-pulse.conf
ALSA lib pcm.c:2205snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
ALSA lib conf.c:3009snd_config_update_r) Cannot access file /etc/alsa-pulse.conf
ALSA lib pcm.c:2205snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM plughw:0,0
I have tried reinstall of alsa, libasound. I was having 32-bit flash player; but there was no sound. Now I am using 64-bit flash player from adobe website, yet no sound still. I do not have pulseaudio. The file alsa-pulse.conf does not exist. Somehow, my system thinks there is pulse while I have it uninstalled.

I'm preparing a laptop for Slackware 13.x or whatever the new release will be. I've installed '-current' x86_64 arch. Boy, is this baby fast on this laptop. I thought 13 was fast but oh well another thread.
My issue now is that with '-current' is that ThunderBird links won't open in FF. I click on a link in TB and noting happens. I searched and found '"Browser" problems in Thunderbird 3'.
In this thread, post #9;Quote:

I modified the 'prefs.js' file. Of course it was done while app was not running. Still no joy. Further searches showed the same thing with most users bumping back to older versions. There's got to be fix and I refuse to give up to a computer let alone a DE.

I've made a little script which helps to install codecs, flash, wine etc. in Fedora. They are not easy for fedora users as just doing a apt-get install in Ubuntu. Project page is here- fedorautils.sf.net/
But I want to add a autoupdate feature to it. The script should be able to check the sourceforge site and notify if an update is available. i think this is a must have feature fr the script as many things are fixed and features added eventually. So if someone has something wrong in his version of the script he can try the new one to see if the problem has been fixed. Also i want to add a logging feature. can I print all the terminal output to a file? It would help me a lot to see what went wrong.
Though it is not Ubuntu related, your scripting knowledge could help me and I would be grateful for that. That is the reason I posted here.

I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

I just bought a new laptop and installed Fedora 14 on it. I now just noticed that I must have been very sloppy when selecting the download CD, because somehow I managed to install the 32-bit i686 version instead of the 64-bit x86_64.
Is there a way to change without wiping out the existing install and do a reinstall?

I wonder if there is an easy way to accomplish the following: I made a tool and part of it needs to be compiled. It would be easy if I can automate compilation for multiple platforms (x86 / x86_64 / RHEL / SLES / Ubuntu). Is there a way to do this automated on a single host? Or should I set up an os for each distro? Also is there a way to generate RPM and deb files also on the same host without having to edit the meta files each time a version changes?

For RHEL 5.4,
# uname -r
2.6.18-164.11.1.el5
# uname -m
[code].....
show some "duplicate" rpms, one for the i386 and one for the x86_64 platform?
For example,
aspell-0.60.3-7.1.i386
aspell-0.60.3-7.1.x86_64
There are numerous other "dups" like that. Is this normal?

I've got a rather annoying problem with OpenSUSE 11.1 x86_64, I can't turn off the display power management! I've tried from the KDE 3 and 4 settings as well as GNOME, and finally YaST2. There's nothing in monitor's controls (the buttons on the monitor itself). The actual GUI controls in KDE/GNOME/YaST2 work (as opposed to being grayed out or disabled) and the system doesn't complain when I hit apply/OK, but every time I disable display power management, I wait about 15 minutes and sure enough, the screen blanks. I've checked and made sure the screen saver is disabled, I've looked for a setting to change in the YaST2 sysconfig editor and the kernel settings app, but can't seem to find anything. The only other thing I can think of is to try the acpi=off kernel boot option. I'd rather not resort to that. Anyone know if there is some super secret hidden setting somewhere that might be overriding everything else? Could this be some sort of ACPI incompatibility issue?

I am working on a friend's computer for which he "lost" the operating system. This friend has very little extra money right now, so my classmate suggested I try loading Linux on my friend's PC.I am wondering if it will work. The PC is a Compaq Presario SR5610F with an AMD processor. I have been told that Linux doesn't care much for AMD.Does anybody know if it will be possible to use Linux as an OS on this PC?I'm looking for a cheap(er) alternative than Windows. Friend is balking at Windows 7. The machine had Vista loaded in it when purchased, then the son loaded XP on it, without removing Vista. They have been having issues with crashing for some time now. The recovery disks are supposed to have XP on them, but I don't think that is so, and when I tried running those disks, the computer balked. I finally worked around and got XP to install, using a disk from an old computer, but the code would not work, and nobody could remember the computer's password and user name.I want to start fresh with this machine, and install a basic, working OS. Am leary about XP on eBay or some such, but they really don't have the funds to purchase anything over $100.00.
