Slackware :: How To Install The Pidgin 2.7.10

Feb 22, 2011

Been a slackware user for over a year now and this is the first time I've run into this exact little problem. Pidgin's most current version in the official repository is 2.7.9, and I want to upgrade to it's latest version (2.7.10). There is no slackbuild for it on slacky.eu or slackbuilds org, the official repo hasn't added .10 in the week that its been out so I'm not holding my breath on an update anytime soon. I suppose I 'could' install it the old fashioned way (make/make install/etc), but I'm not sure what kind of effect this would have on the current installation, or if it would break itself or whatever. Is there a way to get pidgin 2.7.10 installed without having to do it this way?

Slackware :: Learn The Development Model?

Apr 15, 2010

I am a slackware user from slackware 9.1, these years I tried many distributions, but slackware always winner. I am familiar with server configuration and desktop setup for slackware, but I know nothing about the development model of slackware, is there a way to learn the development model of slackware?

Like, freebsd, you can checkout the kernel source, tool chains source from cvs then build it, some people will commit and check in the change sets, they have a mailing list for developers to talk about the development, for users to learn what are they doing now.

I know there are many README or Documents for slackware, but I donot know anything about internal development, is there a way? a mailing list? a source repository(cvs/git or others?)

Slackware :: Fbreader.SlackBuild Uses /usr/lib In X86_64

Jan 13, 2010

I used the fbreader.SlackBuild in a 64bit system to create a package and I got some libraries installed under /usr/lib instead of /usr/lib64. FBReader seems to work fine though, so I'm not sure this is a problem. I guess it could be if some other app looks for those libraries. Just thought I should report it anyway.

I used UI=gtk if it matters.

Slackware :: Sc Doesn't Really Work In X86_64?

Dec 2, 2010

The sc spreadsheet app doesn't really work in 64bits. It launches but you're unable to do anything with it, it's not possible to enter any values in the cells or do anything else. It works fine in 32bit though.

To make it work properly in 64bits, you can use this patch, borrowed from debian: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...changes-7.16-3

And there is also this patch to make DESTDIR work properly with the Makefile: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...-destdir.patch

Slackware :: How To Compile Gnustep For X86_64

Apr 9, 2010

The background to the problem. I was dangerous, not deadly or elite and I want to be that way again. The best representation that I have found is oolite. Now this installs by auto-package but only in 32-bit and I find auto-package a bit of a pain. I have the windows version installed and running under wine but would prefer a compiled 64-bit Slackware package.

Oolite requires gnu-step so I have downloaded the source and some old (12.2) slackbuilds, which I have modified, and made a package for gnustep-make. The next stage is to make a package for gnustep-base however it is failing with the following error

Code:

./configure: line 1390: gnustep-config: command not found
configure: error: cannot run /bin/sh /tmp/SBo/gnustep-base-1.18.0/config.sub

General :: Which Programming Languages Do Need To Learn For Career?

May 4, 2011

I am just starting to learn Linux and am interested in a career in Linux. Actually I wanna go for RHCE, which is the first step for Sys Admin..right?? Basically I do NOT want to go into programming/developing as I don't feel it's my cup of tea (and also may be it sort of boggles me). Still, from what I gather I am having confusions regarding whether I should learn any programming language for a career in Linux.

Here I am avoiding programming..and now I get to hear that Linux career uses programming..That's sort of frustrating...My friend told me I need to "master" C. Do I need to learn some programming language?? If yes, then to how much extent?

Slackware :: Packages Disappearing At Shutdown - Firefox And Pidgin Refused To Run?

Dec 19, 2010

It seems that I will get slackware working fine, just the way I want, and after I turned it off and turned it back on, Firefox and Pidgin refused to run because something was missing that was there before.

After uninstalling them both, and then realizing that the package was somehow uninstalled without me knowing, I reinstalled it in case anything else needed it. That was yesterday, and now today I woke up and started the computer, trying to use Konqueror. Strangely, there's no wireless internet, so I tried to use wicd and it just doesn't start. I try again from the terminal and I get this:

[Code]....

ImportError: /usr/lib/libdbus-glib-1.so.2: undefined symbol g_variant_new_double So I went and used slackpkg and it seems that libdbusmenu was uninstalled too. I really don't understand what's going on here. It's pretty annoying because without wicd I can't even use an ethernet connection, so the computer is basically useless to me at this point.

Slackware :: Heavy Instability On X86_64 Current?

Sep 29, 2010

I have a very frustrating stability problem on my Workstation where I run a Slackware64 Current installation. The problem is, many programs just crashes, after they started, or after a quit short while. Affected are Firefox, Thunderbird, Krusader, Amarok, Konsole, and many other programs. The second problem is, if I downloaded a bzip2 archive, it is corrupt. I downloaded many archives, from other mirrors, and all corrupt. I had installed, the Multilib-packages, thought they would be the reason for the problems, and installed the standard packages of glibc and gcc. No changes. Then I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.33.4, to 2.6.35.6. (Compiled it myself) Nothing better.
