i am trying to script an visualization application, grads, to generate a bunch of maps in a preprocessing batch.The application normally takes input from the console and launches an X window to display the results in. After the results are display, you can write them to an image fileis there a way to set the X display to be some kind of null device that ignores all the input and output?
View 2 RepliesI have just installed joomla and proceeded to do the web install. Got the interface up and running and its now complaining it does not see the mysql server running. I do in fact have it running. Veryfied it with mysql command on command line and it complained with missing attributes.
I read a thread that it needs php-mysql installed. So went to proceed to install it. Well, I did not have that and went to install it. Verified it. Package mysql-server-5.0.77-3.el5.i386 already installed and latest version
I then did a service mysql reset.
Checked back at the joomla web install interface and still, it says there is no mysql support! What is next? Im running centos OS. Also, I am running LAMP
When I installed CentOS v5, I declined the FTP server that cane with it because I have used and prefer ProFTPd. Now I'm not so sure what's running. How do I check what FTP is installed and / or running? ALSO there seem to be TWO ProFTPd conf files, one at:

I have searched google and this site, but cannot find anything that works on Debian 6; the SLES packages will install, but don't do anything.

Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
I've been google'ing around recently for some good solutions for creating local yum "update" repositories without syncing entire repositories. (or adding hundreds of exclude statements in config files)
I have several boxes with a common base build (centos 5.5/x86_64), one has nagios3, another has apache, and another tomcat6 (also a couple of others) For tomcat and nagios I'm obviously using 3rd party repositories (jpackage, epel, rpmforge to name a few) Everything is installed via RPM from kickstart.
I would like to make an updates repository which contains the updates for everything that's installed (including centos base).
Updates will be downloaded on a separate box, but not sure how to get the list of packages required on that box where the packages are not actually installed. I've looked at reposync and mrepo, but appear to be syncing from what's available rather than what's required.
I was hoping that I can provide an "rpm -qa" output, compare this to a "yum list" or perhaps running "yum check-update" on a list rather than installed packages. I could then use the yum-downloadonly module to get the packages which have changed from available sources.
I have developed a small website using jspx pages.Now i want to host the website to a server which is a linux machine.The linux machine which i m referring to is already hosting some web pages(jspx) through a web server Which is running at port 8888.My first question would be "How would i check which web server is installed in the server?"Due to my little knowledge about linux machine .I have copied some simple html pages to /var/ www/ html location. View 1 Replies View RelatedI began by first installing Unbuntu Server (this was yesterday evening). After configuring and reconfiguring and reinstallation, I finally got it installed the way I wanted, so I thought! Today, I decided to give Debian a try. Read many posts concerning its stability, etc. D/L and installed. No problem, First I was met with permission denied error when trying to perform a simple 'cp' command. Jumped back to the forum and searched found a solution type 'su and enter password that worked perfectly I type some things in the smb.conf file (according to other instructions) then return to my XP machine to try connecting again. I know this isn't exactly 'rocket scientist' stuff, but WTH is going on? When the login screen appears in XP, I provide the proper credentials and still can't connect!! Also, how can I grant myself permissions other than using 'su -'?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm currently logged in (locally) to a machine and was running in a TTY session without having started an X server. I accidentally Ctrl-Alt-F7'ed bringing me to where the graphical shell would be if it was running. The trouble is, I can't get back. I assume going to another TTY is forbidden using the standard Ctrl-Alt-F* to protect students who have logged in to KDE or whatever, locked the screen, but don't realize that anyone could come along and Ctrl-Alt-F1 into their TTY session. The trouble is that there IS no X server running, and so I can't exit from it, and am stuck in the Ctrl-Alt-F7 TTY which just has a cursor blinking at the top left of the screen.
Is there another way to switch currently-viewed TTY? How can I get out of this?

The /etc/cups/printers.conf file is properly set, the printers appear in localhost:631 and they are printing test pages. However, all command line print commands seem to be trying to print to sdst@other.domain I don't know why printers.conf is being ignored and why and how sdst@other.domain was added. Seems like it might have been auto-discovered?

Total, total noob here, but I would like to know if this is possible, and maybe some tips on how to do it if it is.I just got myself a dedicated server, and I guess I assumed I could just remote control it via my own screen, much like using vnc or remote desktop, but that wasn't the case.The server has Debian 5.0, a "minimal install" is what they called it, I assume it's just installed and not configured at all.1. Connect to the server, and I guess the only way is via telnet? Since I have no VNC or remote desktop (yeah, microsoft, I know, but I don't know what it's called for Linux/GNU).2. Can I install VNC or somehow "activate" or "open" the GUI via telnet, much like a remote desktop kind of solution? I have used Debian's GUI on my laptop a couple of times, and I'm a total Windows-user, but I can navigate the graphical interface. I'm just COMPLETELY nulled when it comes to command line.So yeah, I guess I'm wondering how the heck I can remote control the server via a GUI, preferably VNC, and if I can install it via telnet or however I'm supposed to connect to the server?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am very new to Linux and trying to setup a Ubuntu server in my Windows 7 PC. that means, I am trying to have a dual boot system. While starting, my PC had 500GB and only one drive C. 18GB of it is used and rest was free.
I have gone thru the following step.
1. Downloaded Ubuntu server on a USB using "Universal USb installer"
2. Booted the PC from the USB and started the Install Ubuntu Server
3. After a few steps the install showed 4 partition options.
I specified the guided partitioning options using free space. (The other options where : Using entire disk, using entire disk with LVM, Manual) Next step it asked me to enter the disk space- it told me it will take at-least 19 GB and maximum available is approx 450GB. My intention was to use the full free space as much as possible. So I specified "max". It told me that it is going to overwrite and create the new partition. Then it progressed fine.
4. I also chosen to install the LAMP stack /Postgress etc.
The installation completed fine When rebooted I logged back in in windows 7. When I opened explorer, I still see that the C drive has around 18GB and 396 GB free space. t seems some of the space has been used by the linux server install. I again started my PC and now I logged in to Ubuntu. I tried command $ df -h . But it is showing the following:

I am using on Windows Vista, Filezilla server. I have it set up to be accessed via outside IPs and when I use a client on the IP I have it connects normally using Filezilla client. On the same machine I have Ubuntu running in a virtual box and when using filezilla client in there it works fine. Now I want to try the command prompt. So I do the ftp xxx.xxx.xx.xxI enter the name and password and i get the ftp command prompt, but the commands are not working properly. when trying "ls" or "cd" these commands do not work. "cd" tells me that the current directory is "/" root, but this does not make sense in the windows operating system. Now the filezilla client is taking the user in the application window directly to the root folder of the permitted filespace granted to that user. How can the same be done from the command prompt, if there is a way? It is as if the command prompt takes me to the root which does not exist or even have correct permissions to move in. Is there any way to be taken to the correct directory directly, or move there especially when the slashes are the wrong way around etc?
