General :: Restore Bootloader Or Bootsector For Windows Vista?

Jul 21, 2011

I've restored NTFS containing Windows Vista. But the bootloader or bootsector got corrupted.

How can i detect what of them got corrupted?

How can i restore bootloader if it's corrupted?

How can i repair bootsector if it's corrupted?

All of these things should be done from linux or from bootable CD.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - How To Restore Windows Bootloader

Jul 4, 2011

My setup is like this:
* Installed Windows 7 on primary (SATA) hard drive
* Installed Ubuntu 11.04 on secondary (IDE) hard drive

I've worked with Wubi before, and I liked it so much, I decided to go full scale with Ubuntu. However, I think I've missed an option in the setup, because Grub has now taken over my bootloader. I tried reverting to the Windows loader with EasyBCD, but booting Ubuntu from there is impossible, since it doesn't show itself. By the way, I don't really understand EasyBCD, so that makes it even harder. Anyway, what I'm trying to accomplish here, is to get a bootloader which uses Windows as default and Ubuntu as secondary OS. How do I do this?

Ubuntu :: Remove GRUB And NOT Restore The Windows Bootloader

Oct 31, 2010

Is there any way to simply remove grub? Does GRUB reside in a specific partition? Do I have to just delete the partition that has GRUB on it?The way my bootable partitions work is something like this.

1)Installed Vista

2)Installed Ubuntu

3)Thought I removed GRUB

4)Put in new HDD(1) and installed Win7 onto it

5)Put in another new HDD(2) and put another Win7 onto that (but I disconnected every other HDD so that the bootloader would be written onto the new HDD(2). When I have all my HDD's plugged in now, I get a GRUB load error (I think it's 21).

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove GRUB, Restore Windows Bootloader?

Jan 15, 2010

Basically, I used a USB stick to run ubuntu 9.10 live, then tried to install to an external 500gb HDD connected with a Sharkoon Drivelink USB adaptor. The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. If any more information is needed, just ask and I will provide it.HP Touchsmart TX2-1010Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bitExternal HDD:Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATAII (with jumper set for 150mbps)

OpenSUSE Install :: Restore Startup Theme (not Bootloader And Not Logon)

Nov 26, 2009

After one of the updates (the same day as the kernel was updated) my Startup Theme has been changed from standard SUSE light-green to a dark SUSE EDUCATION.

I'm not talking about GDM logon (this is OK) and not about Bootloader screen (also OK).

I meant a progress of the SUSE loading.

I have Open SUSE 11.1 with GNOME and some software from EDUCATION repo but not a Education release.

After installing Windows 7, the GRUB got re-written by the windows bootloader. Now after booting into the live cd and mounting /boot partition (sda2), I tried to reinstall the GRUB with this command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda as told by this [URL]

But I got the an error which says, Are you sure /dev is mounted? then i tried the same command on the / partition (sda5) which said, cannot find boot directory, Are you sure /dev is mounted?

And installation failed, now after restarting its just a black screen with grub> prompt.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Bootloader Picks Recovery Partition For Win7 As Vista

Aug 19, 2010

I'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.

Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

General :: Unable To Boot With Ubuntu And Windows 7 - Grub Bootloader Getting Removed

At first it worked fine, but when I restarted after the first time I used Windows, I ended up with an 'Operating system not found' error. I was able to reinstall the Grub bootloader using an Ubuntu Live CD, which appeared to fix the problem, but the next time I loaded Windows 7 and rebooted, the problem reappeared I think the problem is that Windows 7, for whatever reason, is somehow removing or disabling Grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Vista - Cannot Get The Factory Restore To Start By Pressing The F8

Jun 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu to dual boot with Vista that came with my Dell Inspiron 1420. Dell had a partition where the Vista install could be restored to factory state when the laptop was purchased.

After installing Ubuntu, I see:

I think the /dev/sda5 partition was the one that contains the Vista system restore information. And according to Dell documentation, I need to the F8 key at BIOS load time to make the laptop boot the restore partition.

However after the Ubuntu install, I cannot get the Factory Restore to start by pressing the F8. It worked before the Ubuntu install.

How to get to my state before I installed Vista. I want to be able to restore the laptop to the state before I installed Ubuntu.
