I just backup my files. During restoration, there's a hash mismatch report. What I want to know is that, is there a way to restore certain files in the back up?
or is there are way to restore files by volume?

For like windows you can resore your os to a state of peace kind of. If you messed up your vital files you could go back in time and restore you computer to a selected time. I was wondering if you could do that for ubuntu

i am in need of linux help. iam at college and i need this back/restore script to pass this final part of an assessment. i require a backup script that will not only backup but also restore files to the relevent directories. e.g. users are instructed to store all wordprocessor files in a directory named wp. so i am needing to create a backup directory and 3 directories within that and some files within the 3 directories and then back them up ot restore them. l know i should/have to do this myself by been trying to get/understand info for the last few days and came up with zero.

I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

to back-up and eventually restore compiz settings, is it enough to back-up and restore the .compiz directory in $HOME? Reason is that the setting in my classic gnome set-up are different and partially conflict with the unity settings. Since I want to be able to run both environment (to give Unity a chance) I'd like to be able to switch settings easily.

I recently had a problem in Ubuntu 11.04. I had just installed GNOME 3, however, I didn't really like it as much so I decided to go back using GNOME 2,but then a whole bunch of things happened. I tried re-installing GNOME 2,but then I lost the Ubuntu enviorment and stuck only with GNOME and now I'm only left with a terminal whenever I log in. how to restore Ubuntu 11.04 back to its original state, like as if it had a fresh installation?

I used Back In Time (BIT) to back up my data to an external USB drive on Ubuntu 12.04. After problems with Ubuntu I made a fresh install of Debian 8.3. In Debian I have installed BIT and can see the USB drive. However, BIT cannot see the old snapshots. I had thought I would be able to restore on the new install.

I did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.

somehow in the process of trying to get wireless connection, gdm on start-up now fails. i'm stuck in commandline and i have to manually specify startx everytime.
how to i restore debian back to default starting up in gdm?
i've lost my shutdown button, it just disappeared!

I am a newbie in Linux. using RHEL5. and I thought that PHP was the only programming language i need, so i decided to remove perl. I was in the Gnome, and I went to "Add/Remove programs". Then I uncheck everything that has the word "perl". Then it also removed the dependencies.. and now I can't even startx how do i restore back perl and my startx and everything that has gone missing ? i tried to wget perl, and install via rpm, but it says missing libdb.so.2

Then i connect to a vpn service and the routing table get's changed..now when i close it, it doesn't reset back to my default routing table.

We're trying out a few backup strategies and I had a question pertaining to CentOS installations. I was trying to think of the best way to back up and restore installation 'profiles' for a given server. In terms of a basic backup strategy.I currently back up the /etc, /var, /usr and /home directories with an rsync-based script, which has been working nicely so far.I also have a script which does a yum list installed on a certain configured server. It then 'diffs' this against the output from a base install of CentOS. The point of this is to figure out the packages installed for this server 'profile' so I can restore them.
Ideally, it would be nice if there were a way to generate kickstart files in reverse for a given server config. I was wondering what the best way to do this would be. Currently, I'm concerned enough about failures that I'm imaging stuff using Mondo Rescue.

Allot of Crazy things happened lately. A few problems happened and I fixed them. In the end I have 3 partitions of ubuntu net book remix and 1 for windows 7. I never reinstalled windows so could I do a system restore (in windows)to go back and then reinstall 1 partition of ubuntu net book remix.

I've been using Knoppix "Live CD" 6.2 and partimage 0.6.7 to back up and restore my Microsoft Windows XP system volumes on various computers. However, partimage seems to be unwilling to back up one of these NTFS volumes which has bad sectors, some unreadable data. It hits that and stops. But this appears to happen at the same place when I have already used Windows to find and mark and, I assume, remove from use, the bad sectors. Hmm. I thought they'd be ignored. It appears I thought wrong.
If so, which of several other Linux-based or other partition backup tools may be suitable for the task - to ignore or tolerate bad sectors? The main goal is to be able to update the volume subsequently in a way that may be a terrible mistake, and in that case to restore the previous version. Sometime not too far in the future, I suppose I have to think about replacing the disk.

My friend's computer is giving him the blue screen of death (have to LOVE Vista), so I decided to help him. I am pretty sure that it's from a virus that corrupted Vista, but I could be wrong, it could be the hard drive that went corrupt. Being that it's a laptop, I am hoping it's just the OS.
Now, I have Ubuntu on a disc, and it runs very smoothly. (Didn't install it, just chose run on the disc.) However, I couldn't see the files on the computer. I was wondering if there is a way to get those files without installing Ubuntu, because I am planning on upgrading the computer to Windows 7, but using the Ubuntu disc was the only way I could actually get to the desktop.
So, I guess my question is: is there any way to get the files from the computer on the C drive without having to install Ubuntu

I understand you can't restore files from the trash but when I right click on the trash at the top it says "restore files", however clicking on it does nothing. So I tried copying the files in the trash (160 MP3 albums)over to another folder and the only thing that transfers is each album folder without the contents. When i try to move the contents I get an error: items in the trash may not be modified. I can't move each folder individually either, same result. I am not modifying anything I am only moving it.

I moved up to 10.4 which is working great. I backed up my files with Sbackup so now I'm trying to restore my Home folder but it appears that not all files are restored. I'm restoring from a "full" backup on an external drive. Dumb question: Do I need to restore all the directories (etc, home, usr, var) to get all my home folders/files restored? Or why don't all my Home foldersfiles show after restoring "Home"?
EditPerhaps I have an answer. It appears that I have to install individual folders/files. I assumed that if I selected the Home folder that all sub folder and files would be restored. Apparently not. I have restored individual sub-folders but not parent plus child directories.

I'm trying to restore all my files to my new ubuntu server (a netbook actually) and can't! after copying for a few moments the samba shares stop working. in synaptic it says samba 2:3.4.7 as im typing this i realized I was able to copy a few large files when i was starting out so there may be some software added since thats the issue. In my scenario i found that the server does recover after a minute or two. but when copying large files it causes ALL networking to stop. funny that if i go to the server screen it is fine. Ive experienced this connecting with a windows 7 pc and a mac. the server will start responding again in a couple of minutes. when it locks up it locks up ALL networking: cant connect to the webserver, or ssh either when this happens. Just starts working again after 2 minutes. I am unable to sync this with my backup drive unfortunately.
I did some experimenting today and found that I was able to stay connected via ssh for well over an hour with no problems. as soon as I start copying files is when it happens. I use this as a server in a home office so I need to resolve this. for now going to share a drive off my router i guess. have been poring through the logs and reading everything i can on this the last few days.. I switched from network manager to WICD after reading about it online somewhere. that actually did help to apparently reduce the frequency of the issue.
does anyone have any tips? this is a new machine/install of Ubuntu 10.4 LTS desktop version (its just easier than the server version for me even though using as a server). its a new MSI X Slim X320. I bought it as it has the X530 Atom processor which is super efficient and I run this as a solar powered web/file/torrent/app server. In that regard im very pleased with it.

I have 5 folders in the virtual rubbish bin that can not be seen and restored but is crucial for me to recover them.
I was trying too record 5 folders with brasero and I sttoped the process, then all of a sudden the folders dissapeared and after I found then in the reclycling bin by -> right click/properties in this "basic" windows there It's said: content: 413 elements ... 663.1 MiB in total ... also the picture of the bin appears full, and when I put the pick ontop of it it says: 5 elements in the bin...

How do I restore MySQL Databases from an old hdd with Ubuntu on it which won't boot? Information below is not necessary just explaining how I ended up in this situation. Today the harddrive crashed on one of my development servers and I have no recent backup of the MySQL databases on the server.
The stuff on the server weren't horrible important but it would still be nice if I were able to recover some of the files. This is the thing, I don't think the harddrive is entirely dead because it comes to a screen saying harddrive error something enter to continue then it says GRUB in the upper left corner before the computer crashes/reboots.
So I installed Ubuntu server on a new HDD and now I want to attempt to recover the databases from the old HDD by mounting it in Ubuntu but before trying I would like to know who one does that. As I've understood it's a bit more complicated then one might thing because MySQL uses binaries and not plain-files.

I used Deja dup to back up my Ubuntu eventually I reinstalled ubuntu and went to restore from the files that Deja Dup created but when it said it was done there was no change. I can go into the difftar.gz files and see my folders and files and even tried extracting them from there but when I open them all the information isn't there.
I haven't restored Ubuntu till now so I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or not but its REALLY important that I get some of these files. am I missing a step, or what?

I recently moved into a new place and when I hooked up my webserver, I wasn't able to bring up my page, even from localhost. With some digging, it seems that I can't access the database that housed my posts (wordpress installation). I looked for the datadir in MySQL and that directory shows the wordpress directory that should be holding the database and all the files are still there. 1) why the database no longer shows up 2) how to restore the database from the files?

so i've just installed Burg loader in a PC which dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 with no problem using grub2 in the past. But after i installed burg it just boots up straight into the Windows OS and Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Is there a way to restore grub2 preferably without having to lose any files?
