CentOS 5 :: Setup APC Back-UPS ES 350 On KDE Server Machine?
Jun 3, 2011installing my APC Back-UPS ES 350. I am using CentOS 5 KDE setup as a DNS Resolving Caching Name Server, I wanted increase speeds and privacy since I got a letter and didn't like that not one bit, a tv show but whatever. It is very secure now, using peerblock with Iblock List subscribed to for the one year and it is so secure that I have to disable peerblock if I want to use online banking and what not.
setup the APC unit, haven't experienced APC and CentOS is new to me, I didn't want to buy a windows server, so I used BIND instead and well I love CentOS, can't wait to really understand it a lot better, also logging into root is so nice and easy vs Ubuntu, very cool.
I also do not have a DD-WRT supported router nor a Docsis 3 modem, docsis 2, I believe this should give me a lot more speed. currently I just get 11-17Mbps, I am hoping this will bump me back up to 35-37Mbps which I get off and on but unstable.

I use a mac at work and use time machine to back up to an external hard drive which i take home each day. I wish to back up the time machine back ups off the external hard drive each day to my computer at home just to be safe is this possible?
I have managed to open the hard drive and have enabled view hidden files so i can see all the files but i am unable to copy them due to permission errors

Sep 10, 2010I did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.

Sep 12, 2010I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

Then i connect to a vpn service and the routing table get's changed..now when i close it, it doesn't reset back to my default routing table.

Dec 15, 2009We're trying out a few backup strategies and I had a question pertaining to CentOS installations. I was trying to think of the best way to back up and restore installation 'profiles' for a given server. In terms of a basic backup strategy.I currently back up the /etc, /var, /usr and /home directories with an rsync-based script, which has been working nicely so far.I also have a script which does a yum list installed on a certain configured server. It then 'diffs' this against the output from a base install of CentOS. The point of this is to figure out the packages installed for this server 'profile' so I can restore them.
Ideally, it would be nice if there were a way to generate kickstart files in reverse for a given server config. I was wondering what the best way to do this would be. Currently, I'm concerned enough about failures that I'm imaging stuff using Mondo Rescue.
Software :: Tool To Back Up And Restore An NTFS Partition With Bad Sectors?
Jan 27, 2010I've been using Knoppix "Live CD" 6.2 and partimage 0.6.7 to back up and restore my Microsoft Windows XP system volumes on various computers. However, partimage seems to be unwilling to back up one of these NTFS volumes which has bad sectors, some unreadable data. It hits that and stops. But this appears to happen at the same place when I have already used Windows to find and mark and, I assume, remove from use, the bad sectors. Hmm. I thought they'd be ignored. It appears I thought wrong.
If so, which of several other Linux-based or other partition backup tools may be suitable for the task - to ignore or tolerate bad sectors? The main goal is to be able to update the volume subsequently in a way that may be a terrible mistake, and in that case to restore the previous version. Sometime not too far in the future, I suppose I have to think about replacing the disk.

Apr 9, 2011I'm trying to use this tutorial (URL...) to backup my Ubuntu 10.10 (ext3) operating system. I've successfully gotten it into a TAR file on my external hard-drive, but inside the archive are 2 folders: sda5 and media (/media/sda5/), sda5 ofcourse containing my operating system.
I run VMWare as my virtual machine software, but I could easily run Virtual Box if the situation calls for it. On my virtual machine I created an Extended partition, made a 2GB swap space and the rest is ext3 (ext3 space is mounted as sda1) (at this point, Swap is OFF) here is what I've tried to do inside the virtual machine to restore:

but instead it just creates the directory sda5 under media of the live ubuntu cd Do I need to CHRoot in these conditions? AFTER I get the files successfully into the virtual machine, how do I go about restoring the grub2 bootloader? Right now I haven't tried to restore grub on my hardware, but I would be interested in doing so. There are a vast immense amount of forum posts about this subject, but all are to mixed results. Can anybody tell me the absolute definite way to restore grub2 successfully, I don't want to try something if it's going to mess up my install, whether I've backed up or not.

Server :: Apache Stops Responding To HTTP Requests Every Few Days?
Dec 28, 2010I've had a VPS running Ubuntu 9.10 x64 server, hosting 3 websites of mine for a few months now. This problem has been happening for a while. Every once in a while, probably every 2 or 3 days, I'll wake up in the morning, and apache won't be responding, no web pages will load. /etc/init.d/apache2 status, reports that apache is functioning properly. Every time I simply have to restart the daemon and things run fine for another few days.
I thought maybe it was a memory issue, so I lowered the MaxClients in the prefork module from 50 to 30 a few days ago, but the same thing is still happening. My VPS has 512MB of ram, burstable to 1GB, and according to Virtuozzo, there was only one night of high traffic where I even came close to that soft limit. I've checked my syslog, and there's absolutely nothing in there about apache. I've checked apache's error.log as well, and there's nothing in there that would indicate a problem either.
