View 12 RepliesMy friend have a pc with only Windows. She does not want to format it for Ubuntu but wants to have a temporal partition (without deleting the original-rented Windows machine) for Ubuntu. How can incorporate the Ubuntu (no demo) without altering beyond her pc?
Second, How can she read files of Ubuntu (documents- ODT File (.odt)) in Windows? How can she print the doc's when the printer only works for Windows?
Third, how can be deleted the Ubuntu from her machine when she be able to return the pc to thye dealer?
I can access my windows my documentsmusic by mounting my windows drive and browsing to it. I can then playwatch my movies and pics in Ubuntu.But what I really want to be able to do is re-map the Ubunbu docs folder like so:
Ubuntu Pics = Windows My Documents pics.
Ubuntu Videos = Windows My Documents Videos.
I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.
I am looking a way to access my windows vista files (documents and pictures) in opensuse. I have a problem my Vista doesnt load anymore and I really need to recover some files from it before formatting.
I know very very veeeery little about linux. I installed few month ago but then didnt have time to really work on it. I checked on google but it's more confusing.
I have three partition. One is for Vista home edition 64 bit, the other one opensuse 11.1 and a third one for dell stuff (not sure what is it exactly )
the other day my Dell laptop completely crashed, rebooted, got a DST error, tried to run a dskchk off the Windows Boot CD, failed due to "unrecoverable files". Then booted off Ubuntu to salvage my stuff, which seems to work fine, and I can even see my HD - "120 Gb Drive" or whatever it says. When I open it, I see 2 folders: windows, Epson, and 2 random files.
Here's the thing. It says 108/120 gigs are taken, which is just how I left my HD with all my stuff on it that I am trying to recover. Yet my personal and important documents (pictures, videos, documents and even music) are NOWHERE to be found and searches bring up nothing. yet it says the disk space is taken...I am at a total loss.
I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.
I have a bunch of files on a Ubuntu box, which have various characters in their filenames that Windows doesn't accept (mostly ":" and "*", but possibly others).What's the simplest way to get these all renamed and moved to a Windows machine? It's OK to replace these characters with something like "[colon]" and "[asterisk]".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI spent about a year on linux and had all sorts of very very important documents and files saved in my system. I cannot stress the importance of these documents and know that I am retarded for not making backups. We will start another thread for people to yell at me if you want. Heres the deal, XP was installed on this computer yesterday. They did a boot from disc install, deleting the partition and installing a fresh copy of XP.
Now XP is back on this cpu. My question is, is there ANYWAY long, short, whatever that I can find those files or maybe go back to my old install of ubuntu? I've heard a lot about bootloaders and whatnot but I have to get those files. I have a bunch of assignments due and need these files.
I've recently bought a nice little HP LaserJet 1200, which was easy to configure and setup locally. However I wish to share the printer throughout the house with up to three/four Windoze machines.
I think it would be best to set this up perhaps using IPP rather than Samba, as I can't seem to get any of the Windows machines in the house to see my SUSE Box, shame really, seeing as it's superior ha ha
Is it possible to store Windows-based documents and data (e.g, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases) on a Linux server, and easy to do so & to retrieve from a Windows client?

2) If so, can I backup the files to DVD using CDDVD Creator, which comes with Ubuntu? If not, what must I do to accomplish these 2 things if I install Ubuntu?
how the file is generated or what it contains is not important at this point.The important question is how to prevent the file from being downloaded and its contents from being displayed in the browser window?Since it is not recognized by the web browser so it is downloaded on the system. That way, what the script does is exposed to the outside world.Okay, I usually keep such scripts in../cgi-bin/. But for files (text files, in the example) which are being uploaded by a user should not be downloaded by another user.

Back in 2007-2008, I was MS server admin/comm tech. I saw a building running MS server for user computers and Red Hat 9 as a main system server. MS sever was a just one of the user accounts of Linux server. When I log in to Linux, I could see log menu to access MS server. How could somebody make this creative thing?I'm now a Network engineer because working with CISCO router and switch is easier than working as programmer or server admin. I've studied Oracle 10 and VMWARE also but there are ceasless stuffs that I need to study... For now, in regards of my limited brain power, network engineer is proper for me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo my windows 7 partition got all messed up. Fortunately I have a working Ubuntu partition so I mounted the windows partition in Ubuntu and went in to pull my files over to linux so I could wipe the windows partition and reinstall windows 7. Everything is going great until I try to get into my documents.
I go into documents and settings so I can get at said files and it's empty. I figure it's a security issue so I try to alter the security settings and of course it doesn't let me. At this point I realize "crap my windows user account has a password on it".
So to the point at hand, is there any way to mount the windows partition and get around the windows login so I can get at the secured files (and copy them to the ubuntu partition)?
I need to save some .c files. The Red Hat Linux 5.5 machine I am on has a DVD multi recorder drive in it. A cdrecord -scanbus gives me "4,0,0 400) 'TSSTcorp' 'DVD+-RW TS-L633C' 'D250' Removable CD-ROM".
When I add "/dev/dvdrw /mnt/dvd-rw iso9660 user,kudzu 0 0" to /etc/fstab and do a mount /mnt/dvd-rw, I get "mount: block device /dvd/dvdrw is write-protected, mounting read-only", "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvdrw, missing codepage or other error".
I go about this another way? All I need to do is save some source files to the dvd and restore them on another machine.

View 2 Replies View Related(Linux Noob here) I just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (the latest one off the official site) and had it installed on my Acer Aspire one Netbook. My netbook had Windows 7 prior to installing UNR. I managed to get a partition for UNR and installed it from the USB and just went with the steps (never gave me an option to install alongside Windows, since I booted using the UNR image from the USB).
so got UNR working but the problem is that there seems to be no option to boot to Windows 7. My netbook boots straight to UNR. I know I have to edit the GRUB or something but I have no idea how to even do this. How do I setup UNR so that I get the option to boot with either UNR or Windows. I previously installed Jolicloud and it was simple enough that it gave me the option to boot to either Jcloud or Win 7. How do I do this with UNR?
I have this script that I use to find log files in the /var/log directory that are 2 days old, move them to /var/log/tmp, rename them to the system date.filename and move them back to /var/log. Everything seems to work as planned, except that the files don't get moved out of temp, and they keep getting rename. This leads to very long filenames such as:
2010-02-22.user_040.2010-03-05.user_040.2010-03-07.user_040.gz
What is it about this script that isn't moving it back to /var/log? Also, is there a better way of doing this than what I'm doing? Basically, I'm just trying to set up an audit trail on some of the files in /var/log, so that at the end of the month I can tar them, and then have our syslog server pick up the one giant monthly log.
Code:
# Create variables.
dir="/var/log"
tmp="$dir/tmp"
hostname="$(uname -n)"
[Code].....
