Apr 30, 2011I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.

Mar 13, 2010I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

Apr 5, 2010Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

I installed a second (slave) ntfs HDD into the Ubuntu PC. Each time I turn it on, the drive needs to be mounted.
What (exact steps) do I need to do so that the slave drive stays mounted after the PC is turned off.
The goal: When the PC is turned on, I'd like the slave HDD already mounted and ready to use.

Mar 31, 2011I've recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop. I installed a bunch of compiz software from the software center. I used ..... to figure everything out. However, somethings didn't work; such as the cube wouldn't change to the sphere, and the windows animations wouldn't work. When I restarted my computer, the cube changed to what I had set. The windows animations, however, didn't. How can I get all of these effects to work, and to take effect without restarting the computer?

Aug 22, 2010I hope someone can help me. Been using Ubuntu for over a month now (My first foray into Linux) and I love it...BUT I'm having an intermittent problem that seems to be getting worse:Ubuntu will be working fine....then I'll go to open a program (like Chromium or Thunderbird) and it won't open. If I already have Chromium open, it might become unresponsive. If I'm downloading something, it will start acting weird (Like last night- I was downloading c.600MB file and Ubuntu went into dysfunctional mode- and said it was downloading a 2006453 GB file!)
Also, when it goes into dysfunctional mode, any dialogue boxes that come up (like the shut-down confirmation box) will be blank- just pure white- with no text or buttons visible.I can't even run any terminal commands when this happens, to try and diagnose the problem, because either terminal won't open, or if it does, it will be blank like the dialogue boxes- i.e. the purple background will just be replaced by pure white, with no cursor or text).I'll then restart the computer when these things happen, and then I'll get the "The disk for /tmp is not ready yet or not present" and have to press "f: to fix it- then it will boot up and work fine- sometimes for the rest of the day...sometimes for 5 minutes.
Since I don't see anyone else complaining about such behavior, I assume the problem is with my 'puter or my installation? If anyone has any ideas, please help. I really don't want to have to switch to a different distro- as I love Ubuntu///and I don't want to have to reinstall - as I have it configured the way I want it and plus it's on a partition (Still need to keep Win-D'ohs around just for when I want to use Magicjack)This is starting to happen several times a day...HELP...can't. Mar 25, 2011I built a desktop a year or so ago, which runs like a dream. I have installed many OSes on it but the problem persists. If it tell the PC to restart it does everything right, shuts down but the PC remains on before it can restart. The OS shuts down and nothing is running, but the desktop stays on. If it helps, the PC shuts down fine. Just an annoying issue if I get updates in Windows/ Ubuntu etc.

Jul 24, 2011I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows and sometimes I just want to switch between the partitions without loosing the state of the OS I was currently working with. Currently to do that I just hibernate that OS and, when the computer turns off, I restart it and select the correct partition.
I do not really want to have to press the on button again every time I want to switch between partitions. I figure that there must be a way to make the hibernate action restart instead of shutting down.
How do I make the hibernate action restart instead of shutting down on:
Windows, or Ubuntu
P.S. It is more important to me that I can do this in Ubuntu than Windows (because of the way I use the partitions) therefore if one answer says the Ubuntu way and the other says the Windows way then I will mark the Ubuntu one as the answer and give the Windows one an upvote and a big thankyou.

The company I work for has a Dell Poweredge 6850 that keeps pretty much everything (databases, websites, etc).
The server had a Virtual Drive created from 2 Physical Drives. Since the HDD space was getting low, we got a new drive, inserted it, formatted and rebooted the system.
But the system now refuses to start, giving an FAILED message, something related to EXT2 partition that cannot be read at /dev/hda1.

Jan 2, 2011I've hired a dedicated Ubuntu10.10 Server on a remote colocation. I needed a GUI to be able to hook into my KVM guests, so I installed xubuntu-desktop.
My dedicated server provider provides me very useful free service. I can request a CTRL+ALT+DEL to my server through their web based server control panel, and I can boot into a live image from their network. This is vital for me to be able fix back configuration problems.
However after I have installed xubuntu-desktop (XFCE I believe), the CTRL+ALT+DEL no longer reboots the machine.
I've been struggling with this simple issue for quite a few days, I simply can't get it to work.
I've tried setting it through XCFE 4 Settings Manager. It does not work. From my understanding any keyboard shortcuts defined here are specific to user, so I think they'll not work when the server is in login screen (no user logged in).
I've tried to put control-alt-delete.conf files in /etc/init and /etc/event.d/ , neither seems to trigger reboot. Documentary propose /etc/event.d has been deprecated since Ubuntu9.04, i tried it anyways.

General :: Perform An E2fsck -y On Only Two Volumes At Restart?
Mar 10, 2011I want to perform an e2fsck with the y switch (so I dont have to answer yes to every question) on two volumes on a server the next time I restart it. I don't want to do a shutdown -rF because 1) I dont want to check the other volumes and 2) it seems when I do that, the e2fsck doesn't keep restarting itself over and over to fix all the problems. Seems like it runs once, then if it fails it drops you to the repair console in single user mode. I'd rather just have it start the check that will keep repeating over and over right away, because I know it'll take more than one pass.

Jul 7, 2010I am facing problems to restart PADS(Passive asset detection system) from java program.I used the root as a user. So from the command prompt I can start PADS with out sudo ,but when I try to start PADS from the my java program i.e.

It throws the error in log that FATAL error ! you not root and permission denied.
Then I tried the same with sudo
Process proc=Runtime.getRuntime().exec("sudo pads restart";
Here it create another two process extra
1 for stop the pads
2) for start the pads
It does not kill the previous process of PADS .and both the process get hung.

Jan 19, 2011Running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Gateway laptop (new). When I select "shutdown," it does a restart instead. All latest updates and additional drivers are installed. I may have upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 - can't recall now. I have 10.10 on a Toshiba laptop that works fine.
