View 3 Replies View RelatedThough I kinda do wish that I could just fully migrate to Fedora (or Linux in general), I still do need Vista for some things (like, until I can get this mess with my tablet and speakers sorted out). However, when I tried to boot into Vista this morning (by selecting "other" in GRUB) it said "BTMNGR is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart."
Will I have to use the Vista Home Premium installation disc to fix this? Surely, telling it to automatically fix startup problems would work, right? I'll try later today PS This problem could also be related to my other 'yum update' problems. All of my problems started when I performed a whole kernel update, so that could also be why I can't boot into vista.
I've hired a dedicated Ubuntu10.10 Server on a remote colocation. I needed a GUI to be able to hook into my KVM guests, so I installed xubuntu-desktop.
My dedicated server provider provides me very useful free service. I can request a CTRL+ALT+DEL to my server through their web based server control panel, and I can boot into a live image from their network. This is vital for me to be able fix back configuration problems.
However after I have installed xubuntu-desktop (XFCE I believe), the CTRL+ALT+DEL no longer reboots the machine.
I've been struggling with this simple issue for quite a few days, I simply can't get it to work.
I've tried setting it through XCFE 4 Settings Manager. It does not work. From my understanding any keyboard shortcuts defined here are specific to user, so I think they'll not work when the server is in login screen (no user logged in).
I've tried to put control-alt-delete.conf files in /etc/init and /etc/event.d/ , neither seems to trigger reboot. Documentary propose /etc/event.d has been deprecated since Ubuntu9.04, i tried it anyways.
Content of the file is
# control-alt-delete - emergency keypress handling
#
# This task is run whenever the Control-Alt-Delete key combination is
# pressed, and performs a safe reboot of the machine.

I have requirement to delete some log files from a directory if a string"deletethisfile" is found. Then restart the application servers.1. Search for the string ?deletethisfile? in server.log file under a directory, If found 2. Stop that particular server.3. Delete the log file 4. Restart the server.

I checked the BIOS to make sure it ran the correct drive first but no go. I tried reinstall ubuntu but it doesnt seem to work. I dont have windows running on this machine.
I thought it would be a great idea to make Ctrl+Alt+Del a keyboard shortcut for the System Monitor (counterpart of Windows Task Manager). (So it wasn't really accidental)I want to revert to default, how do I do that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought an Asus P50IJ-X3 NoteBook which came with Win7 pre-installed. On booting it up, it is taking me through a Win7 setup routine and won't let me get to the BIOS so that I can run my Ubuntu installation disk. It won't accept CTRL-ALT-Delete with the installation disk in the drive either.
Is there any way to get to the BIOS so that I can change the boot order and install Ubuntu WITHOUT setting up WIN7? At this point, I havn't done anything with the machine so aside from return shipping and the re-stocking fee, I should be able to return it. I'm afraid that if I go through the whole setup routine and write stuff to the disk, the vendor (Newegg) may not be willing to take it back.
" Mark the start of the text with "v", "V" or CTRL-V. The character under the cursor will be used as the start.""With CTRL-V (blockwise Visual mode) the highlighted text will be a rectanglebetween start position and the cursor."I can mark the start with "v" or "V".But it doesn't work when I push ctrl+V.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10--it had Windows 7 on the machine before but wiped that off so it is not dual boot.
The upgrade manager prompted me to install about 170MB or so of upgrades. I chose to install everything and then rebooted. Upon rebooting I received an error (sorry but didn't record it).
I rebooted by ctrl-alt-delete and then got the error: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue.
How do I get back my installation?
I have 3 layouts: USA, Russian and Hebrew. In Hebrew the W key is mapped to apostrophe, so Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout doesn't close tabs in Firefox. There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. Here is what I got from xmodmap:Code:$ xmodmap -pke | grep 25keycode 25 = w W Cyrillic_tse Cyrillic_TSE apostrophe WAs you can see, there are pairs for each layout, each pair tells what happens without and with the Shift key pressed.

I don't know what kind of problem it is. seems strange. I was used to using windows xp previously. Recently, i installed Ubuntu 11.04. i used ubuntu more than windows- rarely i peeped into windows. BUT, 3/4 days ago, when i tried to run xp, it only shows a message(on a black window/screen):
"NTLDR MISSING PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART"
If i press ctrl+alt+del, it only restarts and if i again try to run xp, it shows the above message again; BUT windows xp doesn't run. i don't know what to do.

anyone has a clue why 'ctrl+a, k' nor 'ctrl+a, :kill' doesn't work for killing one of screen windows? Other screen's commands invoked with 'ctrl+a'seem to work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything

I just spent a few days ripping out all the broken/buggy apps that are in the opensuse 11.2 official repos so I can finally get working software(openoffice, thunderbird, wine, eclipse, rubygems, rails, and a few others required getting the "official" versions from their respective websites to avoid strange behavior and outright broken functionality).
All of which makes updating more annoying and time-consuming. Why are opensuse packages so different anyway? Anyway, the last thing that I have noticed to fix is Konsole. For some really bizarre reason ctrl+z and ctrl+c do not work without a third keystroke: enter.Maybe this is something new with the KDE team, since they seem bent on making simple things that already work more complex, but given my experience with crappy packages in the suse repos, I am thinking this is the problem. I have looked over all the config settings that I can find and nothing fixes this affront to productivity.
I've been using Kaggregator in KDE-PIM, which uses Konqueror as the browserto go to links from Kaggregator.Unfortunately, Konqueror no longer seems tobe able to Copy highlighted material with Ctrl C, the way we've done it forever. Is this a setting I've missed? Or is this a new "feature" in Konqueror?

Here's what I've done so far, I've copied /etc/init.d/single for the structure, and tried to use dtach to provide a handle to access the process. View 1 Replies View Relatedhow to swap the CTRL and ALT keys in KDE? to me it seem like the ALT key is better positioned to be used more often for stuff like the CTRL-W close or the CTRL-S save. and there is no way to press CTRL without taking my fingers off of the home row.
View 1 Replies View Relatedok, I pressed alt-ctrl-f1 and it displayed my screen with a gui. I then pressed alt-ctrl-f2 and it displayed a textual desktop. I pressed alt-ctrl-f3 and it displayed the same thing. When I pressed alt-ctrl-f1 to return to my gui, it would not let me return to a gui. I was stuck in a cmd line textual desktop.
How, without restarting, do i return to a gui once I press alt-ctrl-f2??
I am using opensuse 11.2 on my dell studio 14 laptop and to my surprise the key combination for bringing up text based console does not function as expected.when I press ctrl+alt+ fn keys I am greeted with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+F7 brings me back to the GUI plasma desktop.Does this have to do something with the acpi=off thing I did for booting successfully into linux ( without this option, the screen would go off and not respond to anything ... physical restart was the only option). although my system starts off without any fuss, OS does not detect the battery of my laptop.
